It's extremely important to learn how to tell the difference between emotional hunger and physical hunger. if you have any hope of losing weight and keeping it off. Why? Because when the lines between emotional and physical hunger become blurred due to years of emotional eating, binge eating, and using food to cope with your day-to-day life then it's very common to never even feel physical hunger. The problem with not feeling physical hunger is the fact that your body does not need any food if your stomach is not physically hungry. You see, to put things in very simple terms, food is supposed to be fuel for your body; it's not supposed to be a coping mechanism for dealing with stress, anxiety, fears worry and failures you experience in your day-to-day life. Food is not supposed to be your lover, your best friend, your boyfriend, your cheating shame-filled weekend lover, or anything of the sort. Food is fuel for your body and your body only needs fuel when your stomach is physically hungry. How To Tell the Difference Between Emotional Hunger and Physical Hunger When you're stuck in a pattern of years of emotional eating, using food to try to deal with anything uncomfortable in life, then it's easy to keep eating, keep stuffing, and keep the cycle going. The thing is.... food is not supposed to be a one-trick pony for soothing any issue you experience in your day-to-day life. When your co-worker looks at you sideways, food is not supposed to be your anxiety cure. While you might feel a little better for 5 minutes after emotional eating, what are the long term consequences? How do you feel most of the time about yourself and about your body? You probably already know that you shouldn't be eating when you're not physically hungry, but knowing and doing are two separate things. What I've learned based on my own experience as well as the experience of my coaching clients, is that the root of your emotional eating must be healed in order to fully break free of the behavior. Your beliefs are EVERYTHING if you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off. On the other hand, if you believe that it's easy to live a healthy lifestyle free of binge eating, free of emotional eating, free of food addiction, then you're right! And you'll prove that it's easy. Either way you turn, you will prove your own beliefs to be right, whether or not they are true or not! For example, many have the false belief that they are doomed to be fat because they believe they have "fat genes". The truth is, there is no such thing as a "fat gene". What there is is a fat lifestyle and when you are raised in an environment where you learn how to live an unhealthy lifestyle, then it's very easy to live unhealthy, be overweight, and gain even more weight. But this is a learned behavior, a learned way of life.There is no gene that is the problem though. The problem is the thinking, the belief system, and the behaviors that result from the way you think and believe. Another example: if you believe you don't have time to live a healthy lifestyle, you're right! You don't because you will make sure you spend your time on all kinds of other things that block you from focusing on living a healthy lifestyle without a struggle. Why? Because diets are only band aids applies to the symptoms. Diets are not supposed to give you struggle-free weight loss. The only way to get struggle-free weight loss is to change your mindset. Get a weight loss mindset. Cure the REAL problems that are driving you to compulsively overeat, mindlessly eat, and binge eat. The thing is, no amount of food can fill up that bottomless pit. I understand how that feels because I've been there before too! Eating and eating and eating while there's never an end, there's never enough. There's never enough to fill up what cannot be filled with food. The more you eat for comfort to try to fill the emptiness the more you become aware of how tight your pants are getting! But still that bottomless pit cannot be filled no matter how much you eat. Have you ever noticed this yourself? They think that physical hunger is worse than the plague. They couldn't be more wrong! Physical hunger is a Good Thing. If you're never eating for physical hunger, which many are not, then you're guaranteed to be struggling with binge eating, emotional eating, boredom eating, stress eating, and any other eating disorder that has nothing to do with eating for physical hunger in order to fuel your body. Physical hunger is a good thing, emotional hunger is not a good thing if you are feeding your emotional hunger with food. Food cannot heal your emotional challenges, nor can food fix your life problems. Food is supposed to be fuel for your body, not your lover, best friend, and crutch to get through life. Does it make a little bit of sense that your body is your vehicle here on Earth? Your vehicle needs fuel, high octane fuel, when your gas tank is empty. If you never allow your gas tank to get empty, your body is going to do what it's supposed to do: store the extra fuel as fat. Don't get mad at your fat, your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to do when you're not paying attention to the critical importance of physical hunger in weight loss. Eat when physically hungry, stop when the physical hunger is gone, heal your Inner Self so that you stop binge eating, stop emotional eating, stop overeating, and finally lose weight and keep it off.
