You know I’m a firm believer that you need to pick and choose battles in life, and especially when it comes to diet and exercise. Well Aaron from Missouri has written to me because a few years ago she read an article that implied drinking water during - and 30 minutes after - a meal would dilute stomach enzymes and therefore negatively impact how your body’s digestion process! Now Aaron’s rather confused – and I suspect many of you out there feel the same way. So is drinking water good or bad for our bodies? Hmmm… I feel an Angry Trainer Rant on the way! :-

5 Tips In 5 Minutes: 5 Biggest Diet Myths | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

It’s Podcast time again – and this time we’re back onto a topic that’s always VERY popular here at Angry Trainer Fitness – diets! In addition to fitting an exercise program into our lives, another major hurdle fitness enthusiasts face is eating a healthy diet. The industry is full of opinions, with different nutritionists, trainers, and dieticians all chiming in. Who knows what to believe? But the truth is, like exercise, the basics aren’t up for debate. So I hope my 5 Biggest Diet Myths will help expose and clear up what I feel are the most common misconceptions that confuse people trying to eat right. Listen to what I have to say and leave a comment if you have thoughts of your own.  Ask Alfonso: Are Hindu Squats Safe? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today’s Ask Alfonso Podcast concerns a widely used exercise called the Hindu Squat. Indre has written me because she’s confused as to whether the exercise is safe or not – and therefore whether it should be part of her workout regimen. For those of you that don’t know, the Hindu Squat’s form contradicts most conventional squat recommendations; you squat on your toes and your knees travel a good distance over the tip of your toes with decreasing leverage. Now I believe in using your body in multiple planes of motion, and actually find the word “form” a contradiction in terms. Your body is designed to move in multiple directions and positions, but that said, there are certain movements that I believe are inherently unsafe. But do Hindu Squats come into the ‘too risky to try’ category…? Have a listen to my suggestions and let me know what you think? Enjoy! Alfons

Ask Alfonso: Are Carbs Making YOU Cranky? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

If you’ve been struggling with a healthy diet, then you know the vicious cycle of trying to eat low carbs, only to binge on high sugar sweets when you just can’t take it anymore. It’s happened to all of us! Melissa has wrote me because she says that when she falls off the “carb wagon”, and indulges for a bit, it makes her grumpy, and she’s confused because she thought that only low carb diets make you turn from Jekyll to Hyde. But the truth is they both play with your mood for one reason – each manipulate your blood sugar levels and affect the way you feel. Take a listen to today’s Ask Alfonso Podcast and I think you’ll understand clearly what goes on when you play with carbohydrate and sugar intake. So are carbs making YOU cranky? Take a listen and find out

Let’s be honest shall we? It’s really easy to get in a groove when you’re at the gym. The problem is when the groove becomes a rut, and your workouts cease to produce results or improve your fitness. But the result can often be a plateau – and limited results. So in this week’s 5 Tips In 5 Minutes Podcast, I’m sharing with you 5 simple ways that you can take your time in the gym to the next level.  Ask Alfonso: Is Exercising After 40 Hopeless? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

I have to be honest, when I read today’s Ask Alfonso question, I almost decided to not answer it. Joan wrote to me and basically sounded as though she was throwing in the towel because she’s, wait for it, FORTY! Joan says she finds it extremely hard to lose weight now that she’s in her fourth decade, and wants to know if there’s any “data” to back up her notion of it being a hopeless endeavor. I figure if she has this train of thought, there may be others out there that think the same way. I’m sure you all know that if Joan was looking for someone to agree with her idea, she’s come to the wrong place! The truth is you can make progress at any age, and while it may be more of a challenge as we get older, stubbornness will always succumb to perseverance. That line sums up how I feel about excuses. So listen to my suggestions for Joan and let me know what you think. Enjoy! Alfons

You just have a few more pounds to go to meet your target weight but try as you might you just can’t shift them… Keep in mind, most vanity driven goals are not on your body’s priority list.  Ask Alfonso: Will My Late Night Workouts Disrupt My Sleep? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Hello everyone! Today’s Ask Alfonso podcast comes by way of a question from Greg, an Angry Trainer Fitness fan. Greg’s recently taken on a second job, and as a consequence has been forced to workout at 12:30 or 1 am! That’s rough… Greg’s concerned because he uses USP Labs Jack3d as a pre-workout supplement and is wondering if it’ll affect his ability to sleep. First up, I have to give Greg major props, as many people would use a second job and late night workouts as an excuse to skip exercise, or say they don’t have time. Not this guy! He knows the meaning of dedication and commitment, so hats off to you Greg. Stay strong! Have a listen to my suggestions and let me know how it goes. Enjoy

5 Tips In 5 Minutes: 5 Worst Exercises Ever! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Hi everyone. Today’s 5 Tips In 5 Minutes Podcast centers on what I feel are the 5 Worst Exercises that people commonly perform. Let’s be honest – we’ve all done them! You see I’m a big believer in using movements that are both efficient and functional – exercises that work towards improving your health and fitness. But many times an exercise is “sold” based on the mistaken belief that it target a particular ‘trouble spot’, when it fact it does nothing of the sort! So listen to my list of exercises, why I don’t like them, and tell me if you agree or not. I’d love to hear what all of you think. And Charles, thanks for the question. Enjoy! Alfons

Ask Alfonso: How Many NET Calories Do I Need? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Today’s Ask Alfonso podcast comes from May, a 27 year old fitness machine! May runs 15 miles at a clip, takes yoga, and strength trains (and that’s the exercise she admits to) Well, her 5’3”, 110 pound frame has now reached a plateau, and she can’t seem to slim down those last few pounds in her “trouble spots” May has been under the impression that she needs to be consuming 1,200 NET calories per day, according to various online sources. “Net calories” refers to how many calories are left after you subtract your base metabolism needs + calories burned from exercise, from what you’ve eaten for the day. So what we have is a machine of a woman, who I think is over-exercising, under-eating, and potentially protein deficient as she’s a vegetarian! Oh vay! May, thanks for the question – hope you like my answer Enjoy! Alfons
