Main Topic:  Fail Safe Training I wanted to talk about something to think about as you practice carrying.  We practice how carry for a reason.  We want to be able to build that muscle memory so that we can do the task of pulling our handgun from concealment quickly and effectively in a high stress situation.  An action that our body and brain can process so easily that it can do it almost effortlessly.  Like riding a bike.  Remember how hard it was to balance and how you thought you would never learn?  But, time and practice, and now you can now ride a bike without even thinking about it. What I catch people doing is being really good at the things that don’t matter at the range.  For example, holstering your firearm.  Being quick back into the holster never won a gunfight.  I promise.  I am guilty of this as well.  If you’re in law enforcement, chances are you have trained to holster your weapon without looking at the holster or your firearm.  Keeping your head up, being aware of your surroundings while holstering.  We practiced this.  Where does this come into play as a CCW permit holder? I’m not saying it’s not a skill to learn, because you never want to take your eyes off the bad guy until he is secured.  But, is this skill taking over at the range?  Is this the part of your training that you feel good about?  If so, why is that?  I can tell you now, if this is the skill you feel that your best at, you have a lot of work ahead of you. Training Trick:  This week, we want to induce some stress.  This may not be something you can do at a local range, but if you are in the woods doing some shooting, give this a try. Remember that safety is our first priority when doing any of the training tricks that I recommend. Target - 8.5x11” piece of paper Depending on your comfort level and how well your EDC holster is, stand approximately 6 yards from your target.  Face away from your target so that your back faces the threat.  At the start, do 5 burpees, then turn around, draw from concealment and place 3 shots on the target.  Have a friend tiem you and see how fast you can do this drill while still maintaining all 3 shots on target. We’ve talked about it before, the Carrying Lifestyle Always carry 2  Always carry the same way Train the way you carry It’s easy to disregard these three rules of carrying.  We become complacent.  It’s a habit of life to become complacent. I was given a promotion at work that put me in a new position.  This position offered new job responsibilities, I had to dress differently, requires new skills, old skills had to be honed.  I worked really hard at the beginning to prove myself,  I earned this position!!  Well, time set in...I became complacent. Have a gun at the gun fight!!! When thinking about positions of advantage, practice in all areas of your life.  Because, lets be honest, you never know when you may need that advantage.  Disgruntled employees or coworkers, crazy people on the street, aggressive sales people, confrontational individuals. 3 Main things to think about: Do I have an out? An escape plan!!  Is my confrontation between me and my escape?  How do I fix that? Where are my hands? Am I holding grocery bags?  Do I have paperwork in my hands?  Are they in my pockets? If things go bad, what are you going to do with the crap in your hands?  Keep your hands up!! Be ready to fight if necessary. Visualize, practice, know your weakness, have a plan. Training Trick:  This week, I want you to work at moving off line when being engaged by a threat.  Movement will help raise your survival rate in any gun fight.  This can be live or dry fire.  face your target with your firearm in your normal concealed carry position.  At the start or at the buzzer if using a shot counter, step right or left working on foot movement as well as presenting your firearm.  Fire two shots at the target. Training Trick:  3x5 card work...Start at 3 yards and try and place 5 shots on the 3x5 card.  If you make it, move to 5 yards and try again.  Keep going until you find your limit.  Work slowly and focus on trigger control and sight alignment. Training Trick:  This week, I want you to set up two targets 5 yards away and about 10 feet apart of each other.  Load your gun with 4 rounds.  Stand in front of one of the targets.  at the start, draw your firearm from concealment and fire two rounds into the target in front of you.  Transition to the second target and fire 2 rounds.  This drill is to help simulate an attack by two threats.  Start slowly and only pick up speed if you feel comfortable.  Remember to asses the area before holstering your handgun.
