TPP 059 – Shameless Shooting and Tactics to Prevent Them | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:50

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 59. "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Gear Guide:POLYMER Diamond Integrated Sighting System with NiteBrite Main Topic:  Shameless Shooting and Tactics to Prevent Them Seattle Pacific University student stopped gunman, saved lives The hero from the SPU shooting released his first statement Fox News - Las Vegas Shooting Deadly Las Vegas Shooting Results in Five Deaths It's a very unfortunate situation.  My deepest regrets go out to the families.  We must learn from these situations and learn what happened and how can we prevent this from happening to ourselves. One of the biggest suggestions I can make to an individual that feels responsible to not only protect themselves, but to protect their loved ones, is to always be selective of where you sit in a restaurant. Officers have a disadvantage. Most likely no one will ever be trying to hunt you down because of the badge you wear. They are a walking billboard for crazies. What do you want to look for when choosing a place to sit to eat, drink coffee, or just take a break. Face the front door!!!  I'm not trying to make you paranoid, but once you've entered a public area, you should have already scanned the room does anyone seem suspicious or out of place? Once you determine you may stay or find a different facility, grab a seat that faces the door. Comfortable or not. Let your children or your wife face you. It's your responsibility to watch their back. Several times, when I chose to sit down for lunch with my FTO, he would tell me to move. That's my seat Greg. Every time, he explained why he say there and why I'd sit elsewhere. Face the door because you need to know who is coming in and who is going out. If somebody walk in and starts eyeballing you or always glancing your way, that is what we call a clue of someone you may want to watch. Same with if that person enters the building and bypass the ordering line and starts walking around or even be lining it to wear your seated. Don't ever give someone else the upper hand of having the jump on you. Watch their hands. Where are they, and what are they doing. I've brought it up before, hands are what's going to kill you. Hands, don't lie. They can't fake you out. If someone enters the facility that you are at, and you haven't seen their hands, that's a concern. Is it hot? Should they have their hands in their pockets? Do they have them tucked under a jacket? These are clues that crap might be hitting the fan soon. You never know when the fight will come to you. We can try and train, practice, work on awareness, but ultimately, we have to be prepared to fight. Like Tony Blauer said, seeing the fight is 1/3 of the battle. Training Trick:  This weeks training trick, I want you to focus on choosing seating locations that matter when in a restaurant, at a meeting, or at church.  Pay attention to who’s coming in and who’s going out.  Watch their hands and see what you can learn. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:   Making Practice Perfect by Sheldon Neil An avid IPSC shooter (and sportshooter.com fan) from Jamaica, Sheldon Neil, wrote to thank SportShooter.com for the practice drills library, but added that they didn't give folks any input on how to get ready to make the most of their practice time. Thanks to Mr. Neil for taking the time to share. • Dress appropriately - clothing, shoes, hat and even sun block, if necessary. You won't get the full benefit of practice if you're uncomfortable. • Have all your equipment that you will need. Being unprepared is very distracting and will not do anything for your session. Also, being prepared is a good confidence booster. • Begin your practice session in a focused and positive frame of mind. Know exactly what you want to do, what you want to achieve and how you plan to achieve it. A big part of this is to shed the mental baggage that we have when we arrive at the range. I usually allow about ten minutes of quiet time for "focusing" after I've arrived at the range and before I start my session. • Take your practice seriously. Not competitively or in a frivolous manner. There'll be time for racing or fun and games later. (This may have been said or implied before - but is worth repeating) • Know your equipment - its good points and the advantages it allows you and (maybe more importantly) its limitations. That way you will set reasonable and achievable goals. • Practice with a video camera or shooting buddy (or better yet - both) looking on. Each will be able to give important (and "reviewable") feedback. When it's your turn to help your buddy, your input will also reinforce your own understanding and skills. • Review often. This will help to break bad habits quickly before they set-in. If you're doing it right then regular review will reinforce it further and you will begin to more quickly "feel what right feels like". • Take regular rest periods and have energy-boosting snacks available. Practicing to exhaustion is counter productive. • As you get more proficient, practice sometimes even when you don't feel like it. It trains your mind to focus. • Develop warm-up routines, routines when you go to the line and any other routines that you can. It takes the guess-work out of the many things you have to do and also helps to train you to become focused more quickly. • Finally, share your tips freely (but not unsolicited or in an overbearing manner) with others. You will soon begin to receive many useful tips from others.
