 TPP 084 – 10 Best Budget Handguns | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:35

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 84. We tried going to the range with my wife and her brother, which we feel fairly comfortable in teaching the basics of firearm safety however the best thing that I did was ask her for a present for me, which  was for her to attend a class,  women's only class from an instructor that I trust and I did not attend that class obviously. This worked out so well that somebody else, not her husband, is teaching her about firearms and firearm safety. She came home with whole new ideas, excitement, eager to learn and that's definitely something that I could not impart on her.  Another thing I have attended a couple classes so that she and many women in the class that were there with revolvers ended up switching to semi autos mostly based on a reloading issues. So another mistake that I made was to purchase a revolver for my wife with my wife but unfortunately we really should have had some instructions first she prefers it's semi auto over the revolver. So I kind of wasted that first purchase. Having her pick out the gun is a plus. Keep up the great work Nick  in Indiana Hi, I have been listening for over a year or so and I appreciate your down to earth manner of presenting topics. I also had a question to ask.  My wife is from Upstate New York and really does not want anything to do with firearms. We live in Houston, TX and I have had my CHL since 2012. We have three daughters and want my wife and children to be safe in when I am not around.  I have taken her to the indoor range a couple of times but she simply will not follow the Four Rules. I have several handguns of all sizes and she does not seem to like any of them. The last time we went to the range she actually shot through the cable that targets travel on in her lane and I thought the owner was going to have a fit.  Any ideas on how I can impress upon her how important it is for her to get her own carry permit and then practice until becomes proficient?  TPP 083 – Shooting on the Move | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:13

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 83. Went shooting in Nevada working with some newbies Werkz  Holster Giveaway!! 3 ways to enter Email me and say, “I want a Werkz holster” in the subject line to feedback@tacticalparadise.com Share the Werkz Holster post on Tactical Paradise FB page. www.facebook.com/tacticalparadise Hey, Greg. Thanks for the mention on your show today.  My wife suggested that I clarify her motivation for obtaining a LTC.  Her concern is that if I am somehow incapacitated while carrying, she should know how to effectively fire my handgun.  In short, she wants to be able to prevent my G27 (yeah, just like yours) from being used to harm us.  She is a very practical woman and she is also extremely goal oriented.  She knew that applying for her CCW would basically force her to train and become competent with a handgun. We initially started our quest to find the optimal pistol for her in our own home.  Unfortunately, nothing in my safe that was suitable for concealment fit her petite hands.  The local gun store had a few models that were potential candidates, but for various reasons weren’t quite right for her.  That’s when her dad gave her the PPK/S that he purchased in the 80’s and never fired.  Score!  We did a quick interfamilial transfer and she was ready to train. My wife took her CCW class at the same facility that I attended.  I was able to coach her on the coursework and on the course of fire qualification as well.  It would have been easy to be intimidated by all the testosterone in the classroom and on the range.  In a class full of men and only two women she shined.  I think her instructors were surprised by how prepared she was for the class. Okay, so I’ve bragged enough about my wife.  I also need to clarify that in Sacramento County you can have a handgun on your permit that is registered to your spouse.  Since it is considered community property the Sheriff seems to be okay with that.  As for the single-shot exemption, I think some feel it’s a gray area.  Two guys on the firing line with my wife each had a single-shot exemption handgun.  Also, there are many guys on CalGuns that are doing the same here in Sacramento County. My wife and I each purchased a non-thumb safety S&W M&P Shield in 9mm.  I also picked up a G42 just because January 2015 is around the corner.  Since we could not find the right gun for my wife on the California roster we chose the option available to us.  We have a membership at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center in the Folsom area.  We prefer outdoor ranges and it is a great facility.  Hopefully when we need to renew our LTCs in 2016 we’ll be ready to add the new guns. If you and your wife would like to test fire the G42 you’re welcome to meet us at Sac Valley.  Perhaps you can have a Tactical Paradise NorCal meet and greet someday.  Just a thought. Keep up the great work. "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Take a moment to think about what you do when you perform this technique: You move closer to your opponent. Unless you relocate to a more strategic position, moving closer to your opponent reduces your skill advantage and makes his ability to hit with lucky shots far less lucky and far more likely. That said, moving forward is the easiest of the three shooting movements to master.

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 82. Werkz  Holster Giveaway!! 3 ways to enter Email me and say, “I want a Werkz holster” in the subject line to feedback@tacticalparadise.com Hey Greg, love the show. I especially enjoy the way you mangle the English language! On a more serious note, I've heard you mention carrying your G27 in a Werkz "Digit" holster, even in your pocket. I carry my G26 in a Dale Fricke "Zacchaeus" which seems extremely similar, but I appendix carry. How does the holster come off of your pistol if not tethered to your belt? Anyway, keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing a response, either by email or perhaps on the show. Tom from Roanoke, Virginia http://www.jonestactical.com/ Main Topic:  "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Just listened to your carrying a firearm with a round in the chamber. The first year working i use to put my gun on the passanger seat on the way to work. Full mag & chambered. On the way to work i crashed in to a car that swerved in front of my my gun went flying & hit the windshield. I was going 35mph or so. The gun never fired. I just picked it up. Checked it. I have two subjects based on the latest show regarding a Round in the Chamber. I have been carrying for many years and there is a protocol that I follow to avoid any confusion that may occur under stress. I follow this religiously and allow for NO DEVIATION. When I carry a gun, which is always, I have a round in the chamber, so I never have to guess. When the gun is off of my body, (such as during the night), the gun has an empty chamber and a full magazine and is brought into action at the time of need. This has worked for me. Let me explain why I keep an empty chamber at night. My usual bedside gun is a Glock 19 w attached light, so no safety. I do not want to grab a chambered, no safety gun out of a dead sleep in a hurry, as I may grab within the trigger guard. I prefer to chamber at that time. I know, based on my established protocol, that I will have to chamber, my Wife follows this rule as well. Other than the gun being grabbed in a hurry for self defense, the gun is always checked for condition when the gun is picked up, every time. If the bedside gun is going on my body in the morning, it is checked and chambered. If the night time gun is going in the safe, it is checked when first handled and stored in the safe empty chamber, loaded magazine. I select the gun I will be carrying from the safe, it is checked and chambered at that time. Every time a gun is handled, or has been out of your control, the condition of that firearm is checked. Mr. D Greg, You have to tell me what you think here! I will not go through all of my experience, but I am currently an LEO firearms instructor with 35 years in the shooting sports, and I have a concern. I have seen and been sobered by people's inexperience that has made me a firm believer in the 4 gun safety rules. With concealed carry growing, I am seeing violations of those rules that can be deadly, but I think inexperienced people may not be concerned with it, as they maybe have not seen the consequences. My Wife has struggled with how to hide her CCW gun, as she has curves, and women have clothing that does not lend to easily concealing a gun. We both saw the corset depicted in the attached video as an option until I saw it demonstrated. In the demonstration, the woman muzzles herself several different times when holstering the guns in the corset. Even with the Bersa Thunder, when she says not to point it at yourself, she muzzles her left hip. Holstering,

 TPP 081 – Listener Feedback | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 44:52

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 81. "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Main Topic:  Listener Feedback Greg, Thank you for producing entertaining and informative podcasts.  Each week I download your podcast so my wife and I can listen to it on our commute from Sacramento to Stockton.  Yes, I said, “Stockton”.  Needless to say I have had my LTC since 2010.  My wife decided that she should do the same and obtained her LTC earlier this year. We both enjoy your podcasts and inevitably we end up in a discussion regarding the podcast subject.  My wife is going through the process of finding the right handgun, holster and carry outfits.  Just a few years ago she did not even enjoy recreational shooting.  She came to a realization that she should become proficient with firearms since I am an enthusiast and also because I carry.  I was very proud when she qualified with her handgun and scored higher than many of her CCW classmates. My father-in-law gifted a Walther PPK/S to my wife a couple of years ago.  She liked the feel of it and she can shoot it fairly well.  Unfortunately, the roughly 20-pound double-action trigger pull is too heavy for her to pull.  This is the only handgun on her LTC so we have purchased a couple of handguns (single shot exemption) more suited for her.  For her next LTC renewal she plans to qualify with two other handguns that will be more practical to carry. Here in Sacramento County you can list a spouse’s handgun on your LTC as long as you qualify with it.  It does NOT need to be registered under your name.  The Sacramento County Sheriff deputy that processed my renewal confirmed that specifically. Your podcast on the AR-15 pistol with the Sig Brace has really intrigued me.  A few of my friends are considering obtaining similar pistols either though the single shot exemption or 80% lowers.  Now that you’ve had yours for a while have you experienced any issues regarding reliability?  I am trying to save myself the headache of diagnosing reliability issues. Thanks again for producing such a good show Mr. T   I just listened to your episode 80.  Your shows are always full of insight. I know you recently bought a Glock 27.  Great gun.  I had one and sold it to upgrade to the Glock 20.  I would advise getting the model 20 or the model 29, especially with your hiking and off road activities. I would like for you to discuss the 10mm at some point.  You may even consider adding one to your collection. Keep up the good work with your show. Mr. T   Hey Greg, In the intro to your last show you mentioned encouraging your friend to get his CCW. I am also a california citizen and would be interested in hearing a show about california concealed carry law. I am under the impression that it is virtually impossible to get a ccw in the county where I live and work. For example I have a friend who lives in San Francisco and considering that city tried to ban guns completely he is under the impression that it is just about impossible to get a ccw in his county. I really like the show. It is nice to hear gun show based out of california. Mr. C   My experience getting pulled over while concealing a firearm. Hi Greg, First I want to say that I came across your podcast a few months ago and I love the show. I was listening to your recent podcast where you were talking about getting pulled over by the police while concealing a firearm. Last week my wife and I were pulled over while I was concealing a firearm and I thought I would share my experience with you. My wife and I were in Tucson AZ,

KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick: There's a lot to consider when you decide to own a gun: selection, holster, modifications, bullets then practice... Every time I read a thread depicting some heinous attack there's always a slew of concealed carry comments "that's why I carry". But unless you're at the gun range your weapon is typically holstered and you're likely going to be doing something else besides waiting for someone to yell "range is hot". A couple of definitions for you to consider... Shooting is practicing accuracy with your firearm and a target. Gunfighting is practicing efficient and effective movement against against a formidable opponent in a deadly force situation. Depending on proximity to the threat, you're likely going to go through a natural WTF moment which will trigger a startle-flinch. When you flinch your hands rise to protect your head or push away danger. Both movements aren't in the direction of your holster. (So unless your gun is in your mouth or up your sleeve, you'll need to convert the flinch and get to your weapon ). Two other things to consider: if the attack was extreme close quarters you may be fending off an attack before you can access your weapon. You will also be in an off-balance position and likely not standing in front of a paper target. Read my good friend Jeff Gonzales article below and start including this "awareness" in your training. Shameless plug: Jeff and I have known each other for almost two decades and finally teamed up to create a program that integrates my SPEAR research and methodology along with his knife and gun skills and drills. This is modern "Gun Fu" and we now run a couple of courses a year, one for the LE/MIL community as well as a slightly modified version for law-abiding citizens. If you carry, your personal defense skills are every bit as important as your weapon handling skills.
