TPP 088 – Help Someone at the Range | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:21

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 88. Happy New Year!! "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Main Topic: Help Someone at the Range Greg Ellifritz Interesting experience at the shooting range this afternoon.... The range is packed. Everyone got new guns for X-mas and wants to shoot them. There was about an hour wait for a stall. I sit down and start reading as I wait my turn. In a few minutes, a young girl sits down to wait in the chair next to mine. She's by herself and appears to be in her early 20s. She's the only black person in the room and one of the only women. She seems nervous as she fiddles with the gun case in her lap. She's obviously uncomfortable. Uncomfortable people with guns in their hands shooting in the stall next to me isn't what I like to see. I decide to talk to her. Keep in mind that no one at this range knows me or knows what I do for a living. That's why I like shooting there; I have complete anonymity and can focus on my own training rather than teaching others. I rarely talk to anyone, but something told me that I needed to talk to this girl. "It's a long wait, huh?" "What kind of gun did you bring to shoot?" She smiles and seems visibly relieved that someone was being nice to her. She says "It's just a 9mm. Nothing special, but it's the only thing I could afford." We keep talking. I find out she's a single mom with two kids. Her house has been broken into three times in the last two months. The last burglary attempt occurred while she was in the house with her kids. She has never shot a gun, but she recognized that she had a duty to protect her family. She went to a gun show and bought a Jimenez Arms JA-9. She asked all her male friends and family members to go to the range with her, but all of them turned her down. She tells me that she has a bad feeling that the robbers are coming back tonight to get the x-mas presents she bought for her kids. She doesn't know anything about guns and doesn't know anyone who can teach her. She's signed up for a CCW class, but no one teaches classes on the week of Christmas and she can't find an opening until January. The problem is that she thinks the robbers are coming TONIGHT, A January class isn't going to help. She told me that even though she didn't know what she was going to do, she knew she better figure out how to shoot the gun before she has to shoot the robbers tonight. That's why she was there by herself at the shooting range. It didn't matter that she was by herself, that she was the only woman in the room, or that she knew nothing about guns. She had babies to protect and was going to figure out how to do it, come hell or high water. It got me thinking about the courage and commitment that this woman was displaying. How many people would intentionally place themselves into a situation where they know they will be the outsider and probably look stupid and inept to all the other "experts" at the range? Not many. The woman had guts. "I think I can help you. Let's share a stall. I'll show you how to shoot your gun." Helping her seemed like the right thing to do. No problem there. The problem was that the range was closing in an hour and she could only afford one box of bullets. How's that for a dilemma for you instructors out there? You have less than an hour and one box of bullets to take a woman who has never held a gun before and prepare her for a gunfight that she thinks will happen TONIGHT. Game on. Challenge accepted. Gun function, loading, stance and grip and sight alignment in 15 minutes. On to live fire.

Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:  Basic Pistol Shooting Techniques Grip Proper grip is very important when shooting a handgun. As a handgun is fired the weapon begins to recoil before the bullet has exited the barrel. Therefore, it is essential that the grip remain consistent, shot-after-shot. Often I see shooters readjust their grip after each shot. The first shot will seat the weapon firmly into the hand. Readjusting the grip will loosen and change the grip. Grasp the weapon with the web of the hand pressed firmly into the back strap of the grip and once the first shot is fired, do not readjust the grip. The shooting hand should provide approximately 30% of the grip with the supporting hand providing the remaining 70%. This is necessary so that the trigger finger will move independently of the other fingers. In other words, the shooting hand should not clutch the weapon every time the trigger is pulled. When gripping the weapon, cover as much of the grips of the weapon as possible, filling as many gaps as possible. The wrist of the support hand is angled slightly forward so that the thumb of the support hand is point toward the target. If opened the fingers of the support hand would be angled at a 45º angle toward the ground. Utilizing this position the thumb of the support hand will be ahead of the strong hand thumb by approximately one inch. The natural curvature of the thumbs should align symmetrically. The thumbs should not be interlocked. Furthermore, the thumbs should not interfere with the operation of the trigger, the safety, the slide latch, the movement of the slide, or the magazine release. Do not place the index finger of the support hand on the front of the trigger guard. Many firearms have a serrated area on the front of the trigger guard. This modification is for stability when firing from a position of cover and supporting the weapon such as around the corner of a building of the hood of a car. It is not designed for finger placement. If the index finger of the support hand is placed on this serrated area, the finger usually slips off during firing of magnum rounds, thus a large percentage of the grip from the support hand is lost. Remember, the support hand must provide 70% of the grip. The trigger finger should be placed on the trigger utilizing the first pad of the finger. Inserting the finger too far onto the trigger will cause the weapon to cant to the side during firing. (The one exception to this rule is while firing a double action only (DAO) weapon. For example, while firing a revolver double action the finger is generally placed on the trigger at the first joint of the finger.) By placing the pad of the finger on the trigger - the trigger will move straight to the rear. Shooters should study their firearms in relationship to their grip and finger placement on the trigger for a total understanding of kinesetics. In other words - what position of the trigger finger will cause the least movement to the alignment Outro:

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 86. Merry Christmas!! Werkz Holster Giveaway!! Winner Winner!! Adrian!! Greg, With all of your recent talk on CCW and women shooting I'd like to share a recent experience with my wife and Front Sight training. First, some background and my thoughts going into the Front Sight training. I've been shooting for over 25 years, including competition in the Action Pistol events with IPSC/USPSA and 3 Gun competitions. I shoot well enough to be classified as USPSA Limited Master and Open Class Grand Master. My wife's father was an LEO so she was raised around firearms and very comfortable shooting. About a year ago a friend asked if I'd be interested in a Front Sight membership.  I didn't think I'd get anything from their training, I mean what could Front Sight have to offer a USPSA GM?  With much prodding and begging I agreed to give it a try and this past March I met him in Las Vegas for their 4 day handgun class. After the class I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the experience. I expected to be bored but the instructors actually do a great job of keeping all students engaged and pushed me even though I expected to be held back. This past Summer my wife started to express interest in doing some shooting and asked to go to the range. In October we made the trip to Las Vegas and took the 4 Day handgun Class together. Despite having just been in March I was still pushed and my wife came home a safe and competent firearm owner. Years ago I tried teaching my wife to play golf and neither of us enjoyed the day. With that in mind I knew I didn't want to try that with handgun training. The Front Sight program took her from Novice to a solid shooter and made her very confident and comfortable with her handgun. She was so happy with the class that she wants to go back in January with our two daughters, age 16 and 22. Giving them the gift of Self Defense and the skills to pull it off. Where did I hear that recently.......hmmmm? "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The belt is the foundation for Concealed Carry.  Find a belt that is comfortable and durable.  I personally feel that a rigid belt is very important to help support the weight of the firearm I am choosing to carry today.  So what do I look for when it comes to a  belt?  Let me tell you: Does the belt fit my pants?
