 TPP 028 – Get Fit or DIE!!! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:45

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 28. "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Hi Greg, I just listened to episode 27 with Shan Hemphill. Another fantastic job!  I like listening to your interviews more than anyone on the FRN. Shan's statement at about the 54 minute mark struck a chord with me. He said that he believes that as many citizens that can be armed should be, and that he is pleased that folks are taking responsibility for themselves. Amen, brother!! I find that sentiment one of the hardest to convey to friends who don't share the same passion for firearms that we have. It seems like all they hear is "everyone should have a gun always." (Ironically the folks that misinterpret this most often are CA residents who have drank the San Francisco kool-aid). In reality everyone should be capable of defending themselves and their loved ones, and a gun is the most effective way to do that. Thanks for another fantastic episode. Keep 'em coming! I'm in the market for a flashlight but I don't make a lot of money. I'm a family man, I work full time and go to school full time. I'm going to make a temporary purchase of an Ozark Trail $10 light at Walmart to get me through for now until I can get a light in the $70 range. Thanks for the deployment techniques too. Good stuff to know. Tell the listeners not to put the light between their legs! Reloading is a perfect time to get off the X and placing the light between your legs will immobilize you. I know it wasn't a recommended technique but maybe mention it on the next show? Great show, as always and keep it coming! Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 27. "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Gear Guide:  Werkz.com Main Topic:  Werkz Holsters Welcome Shan Hemphill of Wekz Holsters Q. Tell me a little bit about Werkz holsters. A. Werkz holsters is focused on providing quality holsters to both retail and wholesale customers without the long wait times of other kydex holster manufacturers, and at a competitive price.  For those who prefer to carry Kydex pancake style holsters, we are a great alternative.  We sell via our website, and by way of six gun shops in three states. Q. How did you get started making holsters? I had trouble finding a holster for my STI framed pistol.  It wouldn't have been certain that anything from one of the big names would have fit, and I didn't want to wait months for it.  Therefore, I ordered some materials from an online retailer and started trying it out. I started building for myself and friends, and got some pretty good feedback.  I enjoyed the challenge of continuing to improve the designs.  So, after goodness knows how many failures and not so good products (I still have a bunch of my earlier work in the shop) I set up shop.  Since then, we have continued to grow. Q. What are some of the different ways to carry and why?  (This will go better conversational, so let's just talk through this... I'm sure you have other questions.) A.  I would categorize holsters first by material, and where the pistol is carried. Material * Leather:  this has been done a long time, and there are many great holster manufacturers out there. * Beautiful work, comfortable, conforming, feels nice, quiet.  Can lose hardness and retention over time. * Kydex pancake:  This is what our shop concentrates on.  It provides retention with positive feel, is fast, and retains well. * Other Kydex or plastic:  Go look at your gun store, there are a million other plastic holsters out there.  Blade-Tech, Uncle Mike's, Blackhawk!, etc * Hybrid Kydex / Leather:  Built for IWB, these designs are meant to be comfortable Carry Position * OWB description: Outside waistband, typically on a belt.  Most common of the places to carry. * OWB uses:  Law enforcement, armed citizenry, very useful for classes, nearly all competitors use OWB * OWB Typical Carry:  Typically strong side (describe strong side if necessary), typically on hip between 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock for a right handed shooter. * In OWB carry, people often carry on their strong side (no crossdraw).  It can be reasonably concealable, fairly quick, and often reasonably comfortable. * OWB positions:  OWB can be carried in a variety of positions, with 2 o’clock to 4 o'clock being common.  Behind the back still used by some, but I don't find it to be comfortable. * Various types of holsters, including retention:  Basic nylon holster, leather holster, kydex pancake, other plastic holster such as the SERPA. * IWB carry:  IWB holsters allow you to put the pistol inside your waistband, with the grip protruding so that you can get an effective grip and draw.  Usually they use one or more clips over the pant or belt to hold the pistol in place.  IWB allows you to hide the muzzle of a pistol, and sometimes even tuck your shirt in around the pistol.  This provides greater concealability, but I find it less comfortable.  Some people prefer to use leather hybrids, which I had used for a while.  The problem I personally had with one of the hybrids was when I took it to a class.  Under stress, trying to draw quickly, I would draw the holster about 50% of the time.  For me,

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 24. "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Gear Guide:  STREAMLIGHT - STYLUS Main Topic:  The Carrying Lifestyle Concealed Carrying is a way of life!! Here are the five most important things to avoid (1,2) -- or get you out of (3,4 and 5) -- all sorts of trouble (in order of priority): 1. Use Cooper's Color Code.  TPP 013 – Color Code 2. Obeying The 4-S Rule helps minimize Bad Guys: The 4-S’s to avoid: (1) being around Stupid people (profile & stereotype people acc. to: their words, tone of voice; their facial expression, body language, and attitude; their appearance (the style of their grooming, clothes, car, and home); their friends (gang members, convicts, heavy drinkers, drug users); their wealth (poor people & crime are moderately correlated); the level of their mental dis-order manifest externally by disorganization in their lives: lack of cleanliness & order of their grooming, clothes, car, workspace, and/or home; the type of music they listen to (Have you ever heard of a fight breaking out at a classical music concert?); whether they obey the 4-S Rule. (This last point is regarding how likely they are to bring troublemakers into your life, even if they themselves don't cause you problems. Thus, be careful with whom you associate, esp with whom you live, and this goes double for women. One gal's foolishness caused her to be robbed & raped as she walked home late at night and then her two roommates to be robbed & raped as well when the BGs forced her to take them to her apartment complex and forced her to unlock the security doors.) Profiling is merely an application of the Duck Test. (2) Avoid going to Stupid places (profile entire cities or all parts of it to know the "rough" parts of town; drinking/drug parties; some discos/dance clubs; gambling joints; strip clubs, brothels; shadowy or dark places; places where you are isolated, by yourself or alone w/the BG/s; free events (e.g., fireworks shows, music concerts), that more low class people will attend). Public transportation (depending upon the route/line), esp buses; nightclubs and bars;convenience stores; and movie theaters may qualify as "Stupid places" if they regularly have "Stupid people" as customers. Websites likehttp://sanfrancisco.crimespotting.org, http://oakland.crimespotting.org/, and http://www.crimereports.com can help you determine the criminal risks of your school, work, worship, and residence locations. But note: many times crimes are not reported because the witnesses or victims themselves are criminals or are afraid of retaliation, and many times with the ones that get called in, the police refuse to take and file a report. (3) Avoid doing Stupid things (getting drunk out (ideally don't even drink when away from home); gambling; buying/using/selling drugs; using prostitutes, love triangles). And/or (4) Avoid being out at Stupid times (11 pm until dawn; dusk until dawn if you want to be super safe or the times are particularly dangerous). Apply the 4-S Rule to: (1) where you live; where family members go: (2) to school, (3) to work, (4) to worship, and (5) to shop/dine. If you ever have to defend yourself and you are charged, your jurors will be selected from the county in which the incident occurred. (3) Because a gun is not the answer to every -- or even most -- physical confrontations: * Keep yourself "fighting fit" * Practice combatives/MMA. * Carry pepper spray and keep some in your car (the max. legal size in CA is 2.5 oz per container, so stash a few of them in your car). (N.B. pepper spraycan fail,
