Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 18. Gear Guide:  Mike and Randy both said they are happy with midwest industries free float ss gen 2. LA Police Gear Belts I've started to listen to your podcasts on Beyond Pod. I like that you will talk about carry dear. On that note I want to comment about the wearable items like the belt you talked about. Please remember to address gear like belts for those of us who are not at ease with belts like the SOE you featured in this podcast. I cannot wear something that looks as tactical as the SOE. I wear street clothing, business casual, and something like the SOE would look stupid with a polo shirt and dress paints.  So, please... please... be sure to feature wearable items for those who wear business casual clothing. Great podcasts and keep up the good work. Main Topic:  Being Prepared I am back from my backpacking trip and it was a blast.  I’m sitting here with a swollen ankle from the trip.  It was a pretty amazing trip.   We will be continuing our less than lethal series here in a bit but I wanted to share about my trip and a few things that I experienced. Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:   For training this week, I want you to practice dry firing with your non dominate hand.  As a well rounded shooter, you must be able to shoot confidently with both hands.  Practise dry firing with your non dominate hand unsupported.  Non dominate hand only.  As you feel more confident pulling that trigger with your non dominate hand, try out the penny drill by balancing a penny on the end of your barrel as you pull the trigger. Gear Guide:  Midwest Industries SS Gen 2 YouTube Review of the SS Gen 2 Main Topic:  Don’t Be A Hero Greg, I do appreciate what you are doing with these podcasts.  I very much enjoy the position you seem to have taken in not going to the ugly side of political gun culture talk.  It is a refreshing difference for a gun topic podcast.  To point of political talk, I think it is important that you continue to stress the importance of not looking a chance to become a civilian-hero/societal-protector while carrying a firearm.  I believe this was the mind-set that put George Zimmerman on his path to confronting and then killing an unarmed Travon Martin. It was episodes 007 and 014 that prompted me to write this email.  I am not a police officer and neither was Zimmerman when he went on to pursue and eventually kill an unarmed kid.  In my humble opinion, the tone of episode 014 in calling for individuals/civilians to take on a worrier code could very well be an invitation for those with hero complexes or similar disorders, like the situation with Zimmerman and Martin. Please keep up the good work with your podcasts. Be a Warrior Zimmerman, Was he Legal? Local man faces two counts of homicide No bail for Kahmen Saleh Saleh's preliminary hearing begins Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:  This week we want to work on trigger control and breathing.  When at the range, draw about 5 quarter size dots on some paper for a target.  Stand about 3 yards away and practice shooting one shot per dot.  Go slow and really focus on your stance, front sight, Sight alignment, trigger control and breathing.  As you become more accurate move to 5 yards, then 7 yards, 10 yards, etc. Outro: Feedback:  Feedback@TacticalParadise.com Itunes Review Facebook:  Tactical Paradise Firearms Radio Network:  http://www.firearmsradio.tv/

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 16.  Gear Guide:  TASER - C2 Main Topic:  TASERS, Stun Guns Oh My Less Lethal more than Non Lethal Stun Gun A stun gun is a hand held, electrical device that uses high voltage to create an electrical arc.  Ideally touching a person with the prongs on the gun quickly immobilizes the attacker by causing intense pain and loss of muscle control.  However, because the amperage is very low, no serious or permanent injury is inflicted.   Typically they operate on one or two 9-volt batteries and range from 85,000 volts to 625,000 volts. The voltage that a stun gun delivers is not necessarily the most important variable in whether or not a stun gun is effective.  Although higher voltage can translate into a more effective stun gun, equally important is the delivery and the amperage of the charge.  A lower voltage stun gun with a better method of delivery may be more effective than a stun gun with higher voltage. The stun gun and the TASER are designed to key into the nervous system.  They dump energy into the muscles at a high pulse frequency that makes the muscles work very rapidly, but not very efficiently.  This rapid work cycle depletes blood sugar by converting it into lactic acid all in just seconds.  The resulting energy loss makes it difficult to move and function.  At the same time, the tiny neurological impulses that travel throughout the body to direct muscle movement are interrupted.  This causes disorientation and loss of balance, leaving the attacker in a passive and confused condition for several minutes.  Still there is no significant effect on the heart and other organs. Requires close contact Isn’t super effective in stopping an aggressor Often stun guns can be gimmicky and cheap Can be used multiple times before charging Stun Gun Laws TASER History of TASER International Jack Cover’s fictional childhood hero who carried an electric rifle that shot bolts of electricity Thomas A.Swift Electric Rifle = TASER Probes = Darts 8% split so basically 1ft per 7 foot spread More like a firearm Good alternative to a firearm Similar training for a firearm More effective than a stun gun Allows distance between you and the attacker Allows time for an escape One use Requires reloading Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:  This training tip requires two targets.  Use 11x8.5 paper and set up 2 targets approximately 5-10 feet apart.  The goal here is to practice engaging two threatening targets at the same time.  Draw from concealment and fire two shots at each target.  Scan for more threats.  Verify the threats have been stopped then holster and reset.  Shots within the paper count.  As you feel more comfortable, pick up speed.  As you become faster, move further away from the targets. Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 15. Gear Guide:  Surefire 6P Main Topic:  Verbal Judo Less Lethal Options You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar Theodore Roosevelt, “Speak softly and carry a big stick” Academic-turned-cop and best-selling author George Doc Thompson describes how tactical language allows leaders to achieve their goals. Verbal Judo Video Verbal Judo: The Gentle Art of Persuasion Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:  When you sit down to watch your favorite TV show this week, take your handgun with you.  Unloaded and ammo and magazines far away, I want you to hold your handgun on target during commercial breaks.  No pulling the trigger or anything, just pick out a target and hold your sites on the target.  Lets see how long you can last.  This is a muscle exercise. Gray Ops Firearms Specialty Training 3 elements of any good shooting position Bone Support A good shooting position employs bone support, not muscular support. A strong foundation is as necessary to shooting as a well-built house. Think about this: You’re using muscles to hold your weapon on target, you bring your focus back to the front site and relax…your body is going to move to its natural point of aim and you’re not going to notice this subtle shift because you’re not focusing on the target. Muscular Relaxation Through training and natural point of aim, the shooter will achieve muscular relaxation. The shooter must learn to relax in various shooting positions. Undue strain or tension causes trembling, which is transmitted to the gun. When you’re shooting in a standing position, see if you can wiggle your toes. It’s the longest nerve in your body and if you’re relaxed enough to wiggle your toes…you’re relaxed. Natural Point of Aim To find your natural point of aim in any shooting position, once a target is established close your eyes, take a deep breath and exhale. Next, concentrate on making your body completely relaxed. Doing this will cause the gun to fall to your natural point of aim. Open your eyes and adjust your position by shifting your body until the gun points to the target at the exact point where the bullet is to strike. Do not make any adjustments using muscle, even very minor adjustments must be made with the lower body. Obviously in combat or any timed event you can’t do this, but if you practice it enough your body will learn what a good shooting position feels like and you’ll naturally end up in a more advantageous position to deal with your threats.
