 TPP 013 – Color Code | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 45:35

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 13. http://www.handgunlaw.us/ Gear Guide:  Origin-12 Tactical Shotgun Original 12 Demo and Review Main Topic:  Jeff Cooper’s Color Code So in 1976, Cooper founded the American Pistol Institute Arizona (later the Gunsite Training Center). Cooper taught shotgun and rifle classes to both law enforcement and military personnel, as well as civilians. Cooper died at his home on the afternoon of Monday, September 25, 2006 at the age of 86. The Modern Shooting Technique Cooper's modern technique uses the pistol for personal protection. The modern technique emphasizes two-handed shooting using the Weaver stance. The five elements of the modern technique are: A large caliber pistol, preferably a semi-auto The Weaver stance The presentation The flash sight picture The compressed surprise trigger break Jeff Cooper Quotes: One cannot legislate the maniacs off the street... these maniacs can only be shut down by an armed citizenry. Indeed bad things can happen in nations where the citizenry is armed, but not as bad as those which seem to be threatening our disarmed citizenry in this country at this time. Owning a handgun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician. Remember the first rule of gunfighting... "have a gun." The police cannot protect the citizen at this stage of our development, and they cannot even protect themselves in many cases. It is up to the private citizen to protect himself and his family, and this is not only acceptable, but mandatory. The will to survive is not as important as the will to prevail... the answer to criminal aggression is retaliation. We continue to be exasperated by the view, apparently gaining momentum in certain circles, that armed robbery is okay as long as nobody gets hurt! The proper solution to armed robbery is a dead robber, on the scene. Color Code: White:  In condition White, you are relaxed and unaware of what is going on around you. Ideally, we are only in white when we are asleep, but realistically we often drop our guard when we are at home or in some other environment we assume to be safe. Yellow:  In condition yellow, you remain relaxed, but are aware of who and what is around you. This merely means that you are paying attention to the sights and sounds that surround you whether you are at home or moving in society. Condition yellow DOES NOT equate with paranoia or any other irrational fear of persons or places. Instead, you simply have moved your alertness to a level of attention that will prevent you from being totally surprised by the actions of another person. Orange:  In condition orange, you have identified something of interest that may or may not prove to be a threat. Until you determine the true nature of whatever has piqued your interest, your “radar” is narrowed to concentrate on the possible threat and will remain so focused until you are satisfied no threat exists. Red:  If you are attacked in red, you should be fully prepared to defend yourself. Whether or not you have a gun in hand or on target will depend on the circumstances, but mentally, you are already ahead of the game. Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:  Load the magazine in your gun with only one round. Then, in your pocket (or wherever you actually carry a spare magazine) have a full magazine of 15 rounds or so. You’ll again need a timer and an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. This drill starts at 5 yards. Set the timer for five seconds. When the timer beeps,

Gear Guide:  Warrior Mindset Main Topic: Lt. Col. Dave Grossman Col. Grossman is a former West Point psychology professor, Professor of Military Science, and an Army Ranger who has combined his experiences to become the founder of a new field of scientific endeavor, which has been termed “killology.” In this new field Col. Grossman has made revolutionary new contributions to our understanding of killing in war, the psychological costs of war, the root causes of the current "virus" of violent crime that is raging around the world, and the process of healing the victims of violence, in war and peace. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Dave Grossman speaks on being a Warrior! Killology Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:  This week practice the 5 step draw but what I want you to focus on more this week is holstering without looking at your holster.  Keep your eyes on the threat. 5 Step Presentation Outro: Feedback:  Feedback@TacticalParadise.com Itunes Review Facebook:  Tactical Paradise Firearms Radio Network:  http://www.firearmsradio.tv/

Gear Guide:  Armed: The Essential Guide to Concealed Carry Main Topic:  Concealed Carry Needs to Know More and more Americans are becoming concealed-carry permit holders What You Need To Know To Carry A Concealed Carry Weapon Be ready and willing Know Federal, State and Local laws Know what States recognize your permit and what laws may not be the same laws Know the Force escalation continuum Know how to secure and store your firearm Handguns are a power tool know how it works Become skilled with that power tool Defensive firearms are only used to save lives Know how to handle a malfunction Avoid conflicts, guns are not used to intimidate, there are laws against it Know how to communicate and move under stress Be able to shoot under stress A gun is last resort, know less than lethal force options Learn to present firearm quickly and be able to shoot from the draw Brandishing a weapon Gun Safety: 1) Always treat a gun as if it were loaded. 2) Always point a gun in a safe direction. 3) Know your target and beyond. 4) Keep your finger off the trigger unless you intend to shoot. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!!!! Training Trick:  This weeks training tip is a simple one but it is still very important to implement when you are training with your handgun.  When you practice with your handgun, I want you to start assessing the area after you take a few shots.  You can practice this dry firing or with live fire.  It is important that after we engage a threat, and the threat has been stopped, we must assess the area for more potential threats. Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 10. Gear Guide:  Glock 30s Hickok45's Review of the G30s Main Topic:  Calibers to consider Part 2 The caliber of a firearm is simply the inside diameter of the barrel.  It is measured in inches or millimeters, depending on the origin of the design.  So, a 9mm pistol has an inside diameter of the barrel equal to approximately 9mm.  A .45 has a barrel I.D. of .45 inches.  Often, there are other terms applied to the simple caliber measurement.  For instance a .45 ACP is a bullet with a diameter of .45 inches and a designation of “Automatic Colt Pistol” referring back to the original design by John Browning for Colt firearms.  There is also a .45 GAP or “Glock Autoloading Pistol”.  Both cartridges use a .45-inch diameter bullet, but are not interchangeable. Bullet grain - Is the weight of the projectile.  Lighter projectile will have less recoil No frangible ammo for self defense. 5” of penetration Ball ammo - is a round-nosed, metal-jacketed bullet. Often referred to as full metal jacket, or FMJ.  FMJ ammo does not typically expand but it will deform if it impacts an obstacle such as a wall or engine block. It has Great penetration.  The military used FMJ in all it’s handguns and rifles specifically for the reliability and penetration characteristics. It is great for training and practice and is generally cheaper than other types of ammunition. “Hollow Points” or HP or JHP (jacketed hollow point) -  have a hollow cavity in the nose and usually expand (and stop) in the body of the attacker. This transfers all the kinetic energy of the round into the target for maximum stopping power as opposed to FMJ, which can penetrate a target fully and exit the attacker, therefore transferring less energy. Hollow points are almost always the best defensive round as they offer the best chance for stopping the attack and the lowest chance of the bullet exiting the attacker and hitting an innocent bystander. “Soft Points” or SP or JSP (jacketed soft points) - are metal-jacketed bullets that leave an exposed tip of lead at the nose of the bullet. “Wad Cutters” and “Semi Wad Cutters” are reserved for revolvers. These are generally cone shaped lead bullets with little or no jacketing. Unless fired from a high power revolver such as a .357 magnum, these are not very good defensive rounds. "Round Nose Lead” or RNL is a rounded bullet with no jacketing. Also called lead, round nose. These are worthless as a defensive round. They are only acceptable for practice but be prepared to spend considerable time scrubbing the lead out of your barrel. In general, I would avoid this type of ammunition. +P - A round that is loaded to higher-pressure level therefore developing higher energy characteristics.  Basically a “turbo-charged” round.  Make sure your firearm is approved for +P ammunition or you could have a catastrophic and dangerous failure. +P+ - Loaded to even higher standards than the +P round.  Very few guns are rated for +P+ ammo. You should also only carry premium, factory ammo. Do not buy reloaded or hand-loaded ammunition if you intend to carry it in your defensive handgun. In many cases it is just not reliable enough to count on in a life and death situation. Carrying hand-loads can also bring liability issues. Over-zealous prosecutors have been known to make the use of “hand loaded killer rounds” a point of contention during self-defense shooting trials. Ammo examples: .38 Special +P - 158 grain JHP 9mm 147 grain JHP 357 Sig - 125 grain JHP .357 Magnum - 158 grain JHP .40 - 180 grain JHP .45 acp - 230 grain JHP Caliber Considerations: Caliber info obtained in this article .22 LR Good: Weapons are small.
