TPP 033 – Finding The Fight Before The Fight | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:45

Welcome to Tactical Paradise!!!  I’m your host Greg Bakken.  In this podcast we’ll talk about all things tactical from everyday carry, to the mindset of armed citizens, real life situations and scenarios and the gear that will help you survive.  This is episode 33. "Brownells Police Store helps make this show possible. The Police Store has your tactical needs covered including Law Enforcement, Self Defense, and Security. Please visit www.tacticalparadise.com/police" Welcome my friends!!  my week in review, I ordered some pmags that came in and I’ve been working on recoil management with grip and dry firing. I hope everyone is getting all there christmas shopping done early this year. Gear Guide:  Mossberg Maverick Model 88 Main Topic:  Finding The Fight Before The Fight The purpose of this podcast is to equip the listener with tools.  Tools they can use to defend themselves, defend others, protect their family and have a general knowledge of where to find information for certain events that they may face at some point in their life. With that being said, I give you Tony Blauer.  Coach Tony Blauer is one of the only Combatives experts who has successfully effected training across all the combat related communities: self-defense, combat sports and the military & law enforcement sector.  His research on physiology, mind-set as it relates to confrontation management has influenced over two decades of reality-based martial artists. Tony covers a lot of material.  There are several avenues one could take when wanting to become a student of Tony’s.  But, there is one concept that travels across all his training methodologies.  Situational awareness. Tony Blauer Blog I’m on a flight home. It’s a red-eye.  I’m exhausted and want to sleep.  The woman beside me starts talking as we are taxiing.  She starts telling me about her job and how she almost missed the flight and so on.  I’m being polite, trying to listen. But all  I’m thinking is ‘I want to sleep’. I say nothing thinking that’ll end the conversation but nope, she says, “So what do you do?” Without hesitation I reply, “I’m a life insurance salesman”. Thinking to myself ‘how clever was that?  That’ll shut down the discussion.  Who wants to talk about life insurance while taxiing on a runway?  But no luck.  She eyes me up and down and says, “You’re no insurance salesman.” I hesitate briefly and reply, “Ok, you’re right, I’m a life-extension insurance salesman”. “A what ?” she says. “Life-extension insurance salesman – I teach self-defense”. “OMG, I always wanted to learn self-defense!”  She exclaims, animated like we were going to do her first lesson in-flight. I looked at her and said, “No you didn’t. People who really want to do things, do them. If you really wanted to learn self-defense you’d have learned already…”  I paused.  She looked a little irritated. “So excuse me for putting words in your mouth, but I think what you meant to say was that you always wanted to know how to never be near a situation where you might have to defend  yourself.” She took that in. I could see her decoding it in her mind. Then her eyes got big and she said “OMG Yes! That is what I meant!” And there you have it my friends, the truth and the paradox of personal safety.  Most of the world doesn’t want to learn self-defense because that means they need to accept and then take responsibility for their physical safety and that’s scary. What most of the world wants is to never be near a situation where they might have to defend themselves.  I get that. This brings me to a great segway to another blog post by Tony Blauer which you can find on his website.  He says: The cool thing about personal defense (regardless of your experience, gender, profession) is that most of what you need to know (and do) is already hard-wired into you. You don’t need to buy anything.  You don’t need to sign up for anything.  You just need to ‘pay attention’ and then act accordingly.

Gear Guide:  Condor Rapid Assault Chest Rig Main Topic:  Grandma Fights Back 76-year-old Grandmother Killed For Her Bingo Money Hendrix had apparently armed herself following an earlier robbery. Thugs stole about $1,000 from her during an October 2011 attack, Cole said. Been robbed right outside of her home,” brother Ronnie Lollis told the station. “That’s what made her get her gun. No one was ever charged in the case, and sheriff’s investigators were still looking to see if there is any link to the homicide. Elderly woman killed in shootout by armed robbers over gambling money Take a look at the patterns that you set in your own life. Some rhythms are unavoidable. Introduce variation to your schedules, pay attention to what belongs and what does not in your surroundings. If it does not feel right, drive or walk away. Advice from someone who spent a lot of time in civil court – take a self-defense course from some reputable (certified?) instructor. Depending upon what state you live in (does it authorize CCW) the state may have a list of certified instructors. If you have to shoot in self-defense expect to be hauled into civil court, 100% plan on being hauled into civil court, on a wrongful death or aggravated battery charge – even you don’t think you will be PLAN FOR IT. My state allows a CCW without a course and that is scary. I have police POST certification to fall back on but I also go to a state-recognized course every two years. Here’s why: you get up on the witness stand and you look at the jury – you expect twelve fairly well educated, responsible and sympathetic jurors who’ll hear how you shot and wounded the crazed, AK-47 toting mugger with a rap sheet six feet long, just as he raised the rifle in your direction from ten feet away. Think again. The plaintiff’s attorney will fight to get his record thrown out as you didn’t know about it at the time of the shooting – and many judges will toss it like a hot potato. Then he’ll ask you what formal self-defense training you had in the application of deadly force with your firearm and if you can’t come up with proof of training from someone who had paper creds the attorney’s going to use that to make you look like Paul Kersey. A person with no training, carrying a deadly weapon on the public streets and endangering all s/he comes into contact with. Remember, it’s not about making the plaintiff look innocent in civil court, it’s about making YOU look irresponsible. I’d also know a few facts about my gun too, irrelevant as it may seem. The attorney might ask what your gun’s weight is, how long is the barrel, what’s the barrel’s twist rate; basic fact to make you look like you’re not familiar with the deadly weapon you’re carrying.

Gear Guide:  Snagmag Main Topic:  Listener Feedback Hi Greg, I enjoy your podcast regularly. Thank you for your time and effort to produce Tactical Paradise. You were mentioning the Ruger LC9 or Kahr PM9 as among some future choices for a small, concealed carry firearm. I was going to suggest exactly what you described in the podcast a few weeks ago, putting each of them in your hand and getting a feel for the very different triggers. FWIW -I did this in the gun store a while back and came up with the opposite conclusion. I liked the Kahr PM9 trigger much better than theLC9. The CW9 was somewhere in the middle of the three. Anyway, I went with the PM9 and have been carrying it daily. It definitely needed the recommended break in period, ~200 rnds. I am surprised how accurate I am with it with that short barrel! The other thing that puzzled me was that you mentioned a mag disconnect on the PM9. Mine does not have a mag disconnect, and I am also in CA, just down the road from you I think (I’m in Fresno). The model I ordered was on the DOJ approved list, no mag disconnect. I wanted to thank you as well for standing up for your Christian faith. Do you ever go out to the Sac Valley Shooting Center? I went there for the first time for the CA state IDPA earlier this month. It is a really nice facility. God Bless, -Tom Name: Shane Message:  It's refreshing to hear someone take responsibility for their situation as opposed to blaming their circumstances. I wish you luck in your endeavor and feel confident you will be able to achieve your goal. Thank you Greg for all of the great content and keep up the good work. I can\'t wait to listen to the next TP podcast! Hey Greg, I really like your show, and I'm currently listening to the latest episode and was wondering if you've ever tried MyFitnessPal. It's a phone app and website that helps you track your nutrition. I have been using it, and it's a pretty good way to track yourself. There is even a community aspect with it and you can network with people. Give it a look, it's a useful tool. Hope you get to keep all of your ammo! Thanks, TJ Name: Larry Message: I heard your story this morning ironically enough as my fat ass was running down a road at 545am.  Why would any idiot run down a road at 545 in the morning?  Well i will tell you.  About 5 years ago 1 morning i stepped on the scale and saw 305.  That scared me so my wife and i engaged in a 1 year get in shape mission.  I dropped 102 pounds but at a large framed 6\'3 i didn\'t feel healthy at 203 so i started eating to put the weight on to about 220 or so.  appearantly i am not quite bright enough to stop eating when i should.     Getting my carry permit meant that i bought a lot of clothing that was larger than i actually needed and maybe mentally i figured that i\'d just fill those jeans/ shirts out by myself without the gunso thats what i did.  I was carrying an lc9 ruger and my wife had just purchased her first carry gun an xds9mm  when the xds was recalled she naturally took over my lc9 leaving me with a full size glock 22(which i used to be able to conceal)  imagine my surprise to find out my pqnts wouldn\'t buckle and i was just past the last hole in that expensive belt i bought,  So i jumped back on the scale and what did i see?  270     This time i set a goal i wanted to see just how much weight i could loose while the xds was gone.  it is still gone but i now weight 245.

Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle Thank you Veterans!!! Holster Winner - Dustin Ribergaard Weight weigh in...not looking good Gear Guide:  Stag Arms Left Handed Upper Receiver Dude, Your story resonated with me. At 49 years old and 23 years on the job I feel your pain. I've always been a big guy, O-line, Heavyweight Wrestler, I was always athletic and one of the bigger guys in most groups. I left the military at about 6 04 225 and struggled to keep my weight down for years. I've been over 300 three times now with my current weight at 334, the heaviest of my life. 7 years ago, when I was at the fittest of my life I was about 225, running 3 miles every day, grappling or Jiu Jitsu 2-3 times a week and living the dream. One night I got out to talk to a sailor on shore leave who had done something stupid. He took off running and I was chasing him down. I was having a great time, this is the police work I love. He jumped up on a retaining wall and I was right on him. I thought one more step and I'm gonna tackle him, that one more step never came. Jumping up on the wall had fully ruptured my achilles tendon. I went home that night had surgery the following week and was hobbled for months. 11 months later, I had been working on running again but was having issues. My weight had bloomed to 290. I had a second surgery 13 months after the first one and never fully recovered.  The end of October my wife and I decided enough was enough. We joined weight watchers and I've got 12 straight days of cardio. Goal weight is 220 and it's going to happen! Keep up the good fight! Enjoy the podcast. As a recovering firearms and DT instructor I enjoy the podcasts. While sometimes basic focusing on fundamentals is never a bad thing. Keep your powder dry and your six clear! Deputy Chief Barney Fife Main Topic:  7 Tactical Shooting Considerations Everyone is always wondering how they will responding in a life and death situation.  A situation where one small mistake can make the difference in victory or death.  There is no winner in a gunfight. 1. ACCURACY TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER SPEED. 2. SPEED IS ECONOMY OF MOTION. Efficiency: An attack which reaches its target in the least amount of time, with maximum force. Directness: Doing what comes naturally in a disciplined way. Simplicity: Thinking in an uncomplicated manner; without ornamentation. Quick draw video with Ron Avery 3. SPEED WILL COME WITH PRACTICE (IF YOU PRACTICE TO BE FAST). 4. LET THE SIGHTS DICTATE THE CADENCE OF FIRE. 5. YOU MUST LEARN WHAT IS AN ACCEPTABLE SIGHT PICTURE AND TRIGGER CONTROL FOR THE SHOT REQUIRED. Shooting from the draw Point and shoot 6. SHOOT ONE SHOT AT A TIME. 7. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, ALIGN THE SIGHTS... SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER. Through intense training, we have been taught and conditioned to shoot faster than we can think. This is dangerous practice. We must bring up our discrimination skills to the same level as our shooting skills. Discrimination is a critical safety valve for speed shooting.
