----Formal English---- Imlek in Indonesia Imlek is an important celebration for ethnically Chinese Indonesians that falls on the first day of the month of the Lunar New Year. It is derived from the tradition of the Chinese farmer in Tionkok. Imlek is also the longest celebration, lasting fifteen days, starting from the thirtieth day of the twelfth month to the fifteenth day of the first month of the New Year. The celebration involves Imlek's Eve praying, Imlek praying, and Cap Go Meh praying. During this time, the ethnically Chinese are thankful for the previous year and pray for better fortune in the New Year. In addition, they also serve, worship the ancestors, and gather with family and friends. It is also the tradition that every family thoroughly clean the house to sweep away any ill fortune in hopes of making way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors are decorated with red colored papers. Imlek involves offerings and all of them are food. Ideally, there are twelve kinds of food and twelve kinds of cakes, following the twelve shios. The dishes must represent prosperity, longevity, and happiness, as well as should be a favorite of the ancestors. The cakes served are sweeter than usual to represent hope for a sweeter life in the New Year. Layered cake represents [...]

Learn Indonesian with IndonesianPod101.com! You are enjoying what was a quiet picnic lunch in a quiet park, when suddenly, your children come barreling towards you screaming! It seems like it takes ten minutes to calm them and their friends down enough so that you can concentrate on one voice at a time! Your son yells in Indonesian, "Mom, mom!!! We were at the pond and we saw something moving in the water!!" His friend, equally excited, continues in Indonesian, "Come see, come see!! Pleeeease! What IS it?" Laughing, both out of relief and because they are adorable, you agree to go explore the depths of the pond with them. As you reach the edge of the water, both boys are tugging at you and screaming in Indonesian, "See it? There it is!! What is that???" You move a little closer to get a better look, almost stumbling into the water (which you are SURE they would have enjoyed tremendously), when you realize what it is they are talking about. You point to the little swimmer in the water and tell the boys in Indonesian, "That is a frog…and that one there, that is a newt." The boys stare into the water with a newfound fascination; you can almost hear the wheels spinning in their heads, when they turn and look at you and both reply in Indonesian, "Can we keep him, can we keep him? Learn Indonesian with IndonesianPod101! Don't forget to stop by IndonesianPod101.com for more great Indonesian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Boy's Diary (1987) The eighties is inseparable from Si Boy ("Boy"). He is the main character of a movie called "Boy's Diary" which was very popular; loved and at the same time hated. "Boy's Diary" is a teenage drama starring Onky Alexander and released for the first time in 1987. The story evolves around a young cosmopolitan man from an upper-class family who is sociable, wealthy, handsome, and energetic. Even with all the possessions and qualities he has, Boy is known as a humble and religious man. In short, all good qualities that a woman can wish from a man, and parents can wish from a son, can be found in Boy. And even better, Boy keeps a diary. Although based on a very idealistic character, hence unrealistic, the movie was a big hit that four sequels were made out of. Cabo, as it is usually abbreviated, introduces Jakartans upper-class life style. With all attributes and possessions he had, the problem with Boy is his love life. And Boy, perfect as he is, believes in true love. Accordingly, the main story of the movie evolves around Boy's love and his endeavour of a true love. Similar to the James Bond character, Boy changes partners in every sequel. Usually the question on a new Cabo sequel is, Who would be the next Boy's girl? But of all girls he dated, he believed that his true love is Vera (Meriam Bellina). So what's so interesting about Boy's diary? Cabo offers a life style that is well beyond the real lifestyle of ordinary young people. In short, it offers a dream. And accompanied by beautiful faces, cool cars, and perfect personality, there is no harm in enjoying a dr [...]
