Akan tetapi, menjadi satu-satunya kerajaan di Indonesia, Yogyakarta menyimpan beragam tempat wisata yang menarik. Sebagai salah satu kota tertua di Indonesia, Yogyakarta memiliki gedung-gedung tua dan monumen. Daya tarik utama kota ini adalah Kraton Yogyakarta yang berada di pusat kota. Apa pula geung-gedung tua dari masa kolonial di sekitarnya, yaitu gedung BNI 46, Kantor Pos Besar, Bank Indonesia, dan Benteng Vredeburg. Kraton Yogyakarta yang terdiri atas 9 istana ini buka setiap hari untuk umum. Masih di kompleks Kraton, terdapat Tamansari yang dibangun tahun 1765. Taman ini dahulu tempat pemandian pribadi bagi Sultan dan keluarga yang bisa berubah fungsi menjadi benteng air apabila kerajaan sedang terancam. Tempat ini sekarang terbuka untuk umum. Berjalan-jalan di kota, terutama Jalan Malioboro yang berjarak 800 m dari Kraton, sangat menyenangkan. Jalan ini sebenarnya pusat pertokoan yang menjadi lebih menarik lagi dengan adanya seniman jalanan. Mereka memajang karyanya di sepanjang koridor. Pedagang jalanan lainnya memadati koridor dengan berbagai dagangan mulai dari batik, kerajinan tangan, barang perak, sampai lukisan. Di ujung Jalan Malioboro, dekat Benteng Vredeburg, terdapat Pasar Beringharjo, pasar utama penduduk setempat. Wisatawan juga suka berbelanja di pasar yang memiliki koleksi batik dan oleh-oleh ini. Di sini juga terdapat toko buku yang menjual buku baru dan bekas, biasanya terbitan penerbit lokal. Becak diparkir sepanjang Malioboro sambil menunggu penumpang. Tukang becak sering juga menawarkan tur dengan becaknya mengunjungi daerah sekitar Kraton dan Malioboro. Biasanya Rute yang biasa adalah mengunjungi toko batik. Wisatawan juga bisa melihat dari dekat cara membuat batik di sana. Biasanya tur ditutup dengan mampir ke toko Bakpia, jajanan yang berupa kue berisi kacang hijau yang dihaluskan. Maliboro dan jalan-jalan di sekitarnya kni memiliki berbagai akomodasi dari hotel murah sampai mahal. Ini terutama menguntungkan wisatawan karena daerah ini dekat dengan stasiun kereta api utama, Tugu. ----Formal English---- Yogyakarta The Central City and Its Surroundings Yogyakarta is the second major tourist destination after Bali mostly due to its proximity to the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. Nevertheless, being the only monarchy in the country, Yogyakarta has a wide range of interesting places and sightseeing. Being one of the oldest cities in Indonesia, Yogyakarta has many heritage buildings and monuments. The main attraction of the city is the Palace of Yogyakarta, better known as Kraton, that is located in the heart of the city. There are other beautiful old buildings from colonial time in its vicinity, namely BNI 46, Kantor Pos Besar, Bank Indonesia, and Vredeburg Fort. Kraton Yogyakarta consists of nine palaces open to the public daily. Tamansari is a water castle built in 1765 located within the Kraton complex. Tamansari was formerly a private bath for Sultan and his family that changed into a water fortress when the sultanate was threatened. The water castle now opens for the public. It is nice to stroll around the city especially on Malioboro Street located approximately 800 meters from Kraton. The street is essentially a shopping center that is made even more interesting by the street artists showcasing their work along the corridor.
