Have you ever thought you might have a problem with perfectionism in weight loss or maybe even a problem with perfectionism overall? If you do I understand, I've had the same problem! This is why my very first post I wrote when I began this mind-body weight loss venture on my first website 17 years ago on March 07 2007 was about perfectionism. Perfectionism can really (really) get in your way if you allow it to. When it comes to weight loss perfectionism can stop you from reaching your goal weight indefinitely. Here's how: On Tuesday when you're not perfect after already "starting over again on Monday" you tell yourself that since you messed up you may as well just wait until next Monday, 6 days away, to start all over again. But then the next week when you're not perfect on Wednesday, then what happens when you throw it all out the window to have a food party the rest of the week and start again the next Monday? What happens is that elusive "end goal" stretches further and further out, so far out that you never reach your goal weight because you start over every week due to a lack of perfection. You know you have a really big problem with sugar when you can't control yourself once you start eating it. You know what I mean? This is such a complex problem that the mainstream diet industry cannot solve it for you, but coaching with the right coach can. After all, how does a food diet unravel the mental and emotional ties you have to connected to food over a lifetime? How many years of your lifetime have you been struggling with unhealthy eating? Don't feel bad that no food diet has fixed these issues for you and rest assured, you're not alone. There's a reason that millions have tried at least 10 diets in their lifetime but still they can't get control of their eating. When Shame is a Good Thing for Your Weight Loss MotivationThis may sound counterintuitive but what if shame could be used for GOOD in your life? What if Shame could be a positive motivator for your weight loss? What if that feeling of shame could propel you forward towards your best body ever, instead of keeping you stuck in the loop of endless emotional eating? The thing is... shame is the lowest emotion there is, it's even lower than fear, but this does not mean that shame is bad. No emotion is bad. What's bad is when you get stuck in an emotion and then take action from that emotion, rather than just feeling it, letting it go, and moving on without taking unhealthy action due to that emotion. What Does Shame Have to Do With Weight Loss? So what in the world does shame have to do with weight loss? Isn't shame a bad thing to avoid? Shouldn't you be feeling proud of being overweight, out of shape, obese and addicted to processed foods? Well there is a storyline out there today which tells you you should be proud to be obese and out-of-control eating with low energy to get through the day. This storyline tells you that everyone should be ecstatic for the wonderful job you're doing of gaining weight, harming your body, and feeling so bad about how you look that you avoid your reflection at any chance you get. This storyline doesn't make a lot of sense if you understand that the human body is not meant to be carrying around loads of extra weight. If you understand how hard that is on your heart, on your knees, on your feet, on your joints, not to mention how hard it is on your mental and emotional health. But the storyline continues because it gives some a way out to give up and keep on eating. Hey, I totally and completely understand how hard it is to change, and especially how hard it it to "give up your food" and change your eating. But that doesn't mean it's good or healthy to be overweight, obese, and just plain out of shape. That doesn't mean that you should lie to yourself about how you really feel about your weight and tell yourself you're proud and happy about it when you're really not. It would be a much better path to take to allow yourself to feel any shame you feel about how far out of shape you've really gotten and then use that shame to motivate you to change. Shame is not bad if you use it to get moving and begin making progress towards your best life in your best body. The Psychology of Weight Loss: Are You Eating In The Past? You've probably never considered before if you are eating in the past, right? It might not even be clear what I mean by eating in the past but if you are eating in the past then you're not losing weight and may even be gaining weight, unless you're in the situation one of my weight loss coaching clients was in, which is not very common. One of my weight loss coaching clients was in a good place in the past with her eating and her weight but then.... she got off track and no matter what she tried she couldn't get back on track, until she met me and I coached her through my powerful step-by-step system, The Inner Self Diet. The problem is when you don't know how you got there, and when you get off track you don't know how to get back. This is what had happened to my coaching client and then after she did my proven step in The Inner Self Diet she was not only back on track but back on track in a fully empowered way, with the steps of what to do if she ever strayed again. I talk about this in episode #557 of The JoLynn Braley Show but it's not even one of the three examples of eating in the past that I brought to the episode with me. The three examples of eating in the past you'll hear me talk about are all examples that will stop you from losing weight and even cause you to gain weight. But actually, even my client's example is an example that stops you from losing weight, because when you have the same experience as she did, you're off track and can't get back on and therefore aren't losing weight. When Food is the Only Thing that Soothes Your Anxiety (but you want to lose weight) When food is the only thing that soothes your anxiety it's easy to get stuck on the rollercoaster of dieting that never takes you to your desired end goal. You know how at Disney, when you ride on one of the rides you always come to the end and get off? Well the rollercoaster of dieting keeps you on it forever, unless you choose to do something completely different and heal the root of the problem. What would be the root of the problem? That would be whatever drives your overeating, emotional eating, or binge eating. In the case of this particular topic, your anxiety is part of what drives your emotional eating. But what if there's more underneath your anxiety? After all, what if you could solve what makes you anxious so that you wouldn't feel anxious all the time? Yes, the clean-eating chicken breast is not what you eat when you want to soothe your anxiety.
