Central Best Shed | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 376

Sheds: What used to be a simple storage spot for tools and maybe a dart board seems to be taking on a life of its own. Some of the sheds out there are nearly as big as the houses. That's why we've decided to have a contest and ask you what's so great about YOUR shed. To get us going, I dropped by John Snow's shed in Gander...he's our first contender for the coolest shed in Central Newfoundland.

The Cost of Worker' Compensation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 448

Last week, the province's employer's council released the results of a study about the effects of high worker's compensation premiums paid by business owners. This province has the highest premiums in Canada. The author of the report says that's hurting communities and limiting job opportunities, but it might be more because high premiums look bad, rather than what they actually cost businesses. Morley Gunderson is an economist at the University of Toronto, and conducted the study on behalf of the employer's council.

The latest of the EU Seal Ban | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 383

In 2010, the European Union voted to impose a ban on the import of all seal-based products. That was a devastating blow for the sealing industry in this province. So, last year, the government of Canada decided to appeal the ban to the world trade organization. The process has been dragging since then, but this week, the federal government decided to push the issue and ask the WTO to appoint a committee to deal with it. This comes at the same time Canada is finalizing details of a free trade agreement with the EU, which pro-ban parliamentarians have said they'd reject if the seal appeal goes ahead. To find out what this all means, and whether the end result might benefit the seal industry in this province, I called Peter Clark. He's an international trade expert, based in Ottawa.

40th Anniversary of the Summit Series | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 512

40 ago today, people across the country stopped everything to watch a hockey game. It wasn't just any hockey game. At the time of the Cold War, a hockey series between Canada and Russia was just as much about national pride and politics as it was about a game. The Summit Series, eight games meant to establish which country was best at hockey, opened eyes and changed the game. With 34 seconds to go in the series, Paul Henderson scored to make sure Canada came out on top...just barely. On the ice with him was the man who had tied that game minutes earlier...Montreal Canadiens star Yvan Cournoyer.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Prospectors Association AGM | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 607

This weekend, for the first time ever, the Newfoundland and Labrador Prospectors Association will hold an annual general meeting. Organizer Norm Mercer hopes there will be at least 60 prospectors at the event in Gander.

 Chainmaille Art | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 423

Chainmaille is usually associated with the garments used in medieval times to protect knights from their sword-weilding foe. The little links must be painstakingly joined together, which is both time consuming and pretty hard work. It's not the type of material we usually associate with art. But Central Newfoundland's Jason Holley does. He uses chainmaille - or raku chain - for his creations. Holley was recently nominated for the RBC emerging artist people's choice award at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. I reached him this morning at home in Amherst Cove.

Cranberry Farms in Central NL | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 497

There were already a few cranberry farms in the province when the paper mill shut down in Grand Falls-Windsor in 2009. But once the mill closed, the initiative to get farmers growing berries expanded. With additional funding from the federal government and investment from the farmers, nine more farms have since been started in the Exploits Valley. Those locations are bearing their first fruit this fall. To find out more, the C-B-C's David Newell spoke to Lloyd Warford. He's the Cranberry Initiative Project Coordinator for the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor.
