40th Anniversary of the Summit Series

The Central Newfoundland Morning Show from CBC Radio Nfld. and Labrador (Highlights) show

Summary: 40 ago today, people across the country stopped everything to watch a hockey game. It wasn't just any hockey game. At the time of the Cold War, a hockey series between Canada and Russia was just as much about national pride and politics as it was about a game. The Summit Series, eight games meant to establish which country was best at hockey, opened eyes and changed the game. With 34 seconds to go in the series, Paul Henderson scored to make sure Canada came out on top...just barely. On the ice with him was the man who had tied that game minutes earlier...Montreal Canadiens star Yvan Cournoyer.
