It's been almost 100 years since the beginning of World War 1. But Memorial University isn't wasting time in planning events to commemorate the Great War. They're put a committee together and they want your input. Dr. Sean Cadigan is the head of the Department of History at Memorial University. The Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation Band election held on Tuesday was a first for the landless band. It was created more than a year ago, and Brendan Sheppard, who had been the interim Chief, was elected to that position. Also voted into office were two vice-chiefs and nine ward councillors. Among those councillors are Andy Barker from Exploits and Francis Skeard of Glenwood. Randy Drover is the new Vice Chief for Central Newfoundland. He lives in Bishop's Falls

 Search and Rescue in Gander Wins an International Award | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 453

A Cormorant helicopter crew from 9 Wing Gander has received a prestigious international award for a daring rescue mission a year ago. The award recognized their heroic actions in saving the lives of two Inuit hunters stranded in icy waters near Igloolik, Nunavut. Three SAR technicians from 8 Wing Trenton also shared in the award. Sadly one of those technicians lost his life during the mission. He received the award posthumously. (PRON: pos-chuh-muhs-lee) On Tuesday, the crew from 103 Search and Rescue Squadron - Gander - accepted the Award of Gallantry from the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in London, England. Captain Dean Vey was First Officer on the mission.

Central Health has a new policy for staff they are rolling out this season. Health care workers there are being strongly encouraged to get a flu shot. If they don't, then they will have to stay home if there is an outbreak of the flu. NAPE is one of the unions that represent workers at Central Health. Newfoundland hockey player, Mark Yetman, who helped the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts to the Herder Trophy two years ago is facing sex charges stemming from 2009 in St.Catharine's, Ontario. We'll hear from a reporter who's been covering the trial.

The store sells everything from tin milk to floorboards, and would order in anything else you need. But next month, it's closing it's doors for good. Here's a story that will confirm for our listeners that I am an unbiased journalist. Most of you who listen to the show often know I'm a big Montreal Canadiens fan. So, for me to tell you the Boston Bruins alumni is coming to Central Newfoundland is a big deal. Still, it's not as big a deal as it is for the town of Botwood, who'll welcome the Bruins oldtimers for an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon. The game will coincide with the grand re-opening of the Harry Ivany arena. Scott Sceviour is the deputy mayor of Botwood, and has been deeply involved in planning the event.

Tomorrow's the big day for the Gander Flyers. After a frantic summer of preparation, the team is finally going to take the ice for its home opener against the Eastlink Cee Bees. It's a long-awaited return to action for the team that folded back in the '80s. When the Flyers were in their heyday, the team won two Herder Memorial trophies as senior hockey champions. Only one player was a member of both those squads. Ed Philpott joined host Leigh Anne Power in the studio.

As you've been hearing in the news, and here on our show, Labrador MP Peter Penashue is facing tough questions about the way he spent money during last fall's election campaign. Documents show he overspent allowable limits by 17-thousand dollars. Part of that amount came in the form of free flights to communities on the coast of Labrador. Election spending rules say candidates must pay full price for any goods or services used in campaigning. Scott Simms is the Liberal MP for Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor.

Fogo Island is booming. The fish plant is busy and with the work the Shorefast Foundation is doing there, tourists are still flocking there. But if you visit the island and want to leave after 4:30 in the afternoon, you're out of luck. That is because the fall ferry schedule started earlier this week. Sixteen years ago, Newfoundlander Mary Gordon started the Roots of Empathy program in Toronto to help students create a more peaceful and caring world. As we heard last week, the Eastern School Board is planning to close five schools under its jurisdiction, including Catalina Elementary. People opposed to the move have a couple of weeks to express their concerns and the board will vote on the plan in December. The first meeting about the plan in the Catalina area drew more than 250 people, and the fight to save their school is ramping up. Troy Bullock lives in Little Catalina and has three children. He decided to make a video to fight the board's decision to close their school. The result is moving and emotional. We reached Troy Bullock at his home this morning.

Anyone who's tried to pay a bill or order an item online knows it can often be a frustrating process. But imagine the stress if your livelihood depends on what you are typing into your computer. That's what'll happen in January, when the Department of Fisheries and Oceans implements an online licensing system. Tony Doyle is a fisherman in Bay de Verde, Conception Bay.
