 HMPC 0405 – Beer Bad | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:08

Here is the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, Season 4 Episode 5 - Beer Bad. This podcast will go down in Hellmouth Empire History as one of the darker days in our empires glorious volumes of Whedonhood. But alas here it is for your listening entertainment if that is what you want to call it. HMPC 0405 “Beer Bad”  - Buffy The Vampire Slayer * Hello Sunnydale and welcome to the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Series, Season 4 Episode 5 titled “Beer Bad” * 2-Minute Buffy * Willow and Oz go through some tough times in this episode as they see the band Shy at the bronze, with lead singer Veruca (that girl is poison) * Seems that there is the tiniest bit of distancing happening. * Xander has found decent employment as the bartender at the college pub and is really taking this role seriously in terms of how it will make him popular and get him chicks. * Buffy is STILL not over Parker *bastard. But fortunately this storyline is going to come to an end somewhat by the end of this episode. * Buffy sees Parker at the local pub and it is depressing. She meets up with some other equally obnoxious college guys and drinks her sorrows away. * Turns out beer is good, its foamy and it also is a recipe for turning college kids into cavemen and women. * Parker tries to put the moves on Willow who shoots him down just in time to be trapped in a fiery inferno with the newly created cavemen. * Buffy saves them all including Parker unfortunately. * Xander will have to find another job, Parker will have to find another conquest, and Buffy will have to find some aspirin but when she wakes up in the morning she will be over Parker and we can all breathe a sigh of relief… * End Episode * Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under * Xander's fake ID is a mock-up of an Ohio driver's license, with a zip code (43226) located on the far north side of Columbus. * Kal Penn stars in this episode as a Caveman/fratguy.(Of Harold and Kumar fame) * Right after the opening credits, when they show a shot of outside the campus, you can see Buffy in the bottom left corner of the screen. It is from when first episode of season four when she's outside looking confused (the scene with the colored folders). * The music video Buffy was watching was Luscious Jackson's video for "Lady Fingers." Jill Cunniff, one of the vocalists for the band, knew Joss Whedon as a child (Mentioned in issue #5 of the official BtVS magazine). * The name of Veruca's band is Shy, but the music is actually done by the real band THC. * This episode received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Hairstyling for a Series in the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards. * So let’s get to the disussion * Buffy explores the ID * Parker is the ID to some extent * Buffy has the opportunity to save or leave Parker in the fire and in her cave-woman state she saves him. * Buffy’s dream at beginning of episode comes true * Interesting statement that Buffy makes when she says that she “knew what Parker was” before she slept with him. * The college kids in this episode remind me of Good Will Hunting. They really play up the superiority aspect of college kids. Then when they turn into cavemen they are idiots. * Once they turn into cavemen there is a period of this episode that feels a little bit like caveman antics are filler. * Xander takes a step towards figuring out who he is if he isn’t a college kid. * The scene with Parker and Willow makes me hate him even more. * Oz and Willow go to Bronze, Veruca’s band is playing and then Oz sits in with them. She is almost hypnotizing to him * Rate the episode * Bonus point for Buffy hitting Parker on the head with a stick to bring this storyline to a close. * Bonus point for so many classic Buffy moments and quotes in one episode. * Bonus point for Willow calling Parker to the carpet * Lose a point for Oz’s behavior.

Turns out Giles has company and encourages Buffy to handle it on her own. o   Buffy goes on patrol and finds vampire-eddie soon followed by Sunday and her gang of vampires who give Buffy a severe beating before she escapes. o   Buffy looks for something familiar to calm her nerves and heads to the bronze where she runs into Xander. o   Xander reminds Buffy that she can handle something as easy as college she is the slayer after all. o   The two of them manage to track down the vampire gang and Buffy sends Xander to get her weapons while she keeps an eye on them. o   Buffy ends up dropping in on the vampires unexpectedly, for both of them. o   Hijinks ensue and Xander, Willow and Oz show up just in time to help Buffy clean up the mess of vampires. o   As they head back to campus Giles shows up after deciding that above all else Buffy’s safety is the most important thing to him and he has decided to continue to help her, watcher or no watcher. o   The only vampire who escaped is trying to make his way through campus when he is captured by a bunch of men in camouflage and masks. o   End Episode * Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under o   When Buffy thinks she sees someone at a distance that looks like Angel, that actually is David Boreanaz. o   (Of Course until we get a face on shot where it's a completely different Actor) o   Before the vamps appear Eddie and Buffy are talking about "security blankets" and Buffy says hers is "Mr. Pointy." This refers to Kendra's lucky stake from the Season 2 episode What's My Line which she gave to Buffy. o   Riley received the surname Finn after Joss Whedon heard Marti Noxon talking to the vet about her dog which was also called Finn. o   This is not the first time Katharine Towne(Sunday) and Sarah Michelle Gellar worked together. They both had small parts in the 1999 movie She's All That. o   Stoner Vampire: I'm thinkin' Slayer blood's gotta be, whoa, like Thai stick. Thai stick was a particularly potent form of marijuana popular in the 60's and 70's. o   Xander: Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to anger. No wait, hold on... First you get the women,

Xander doesn’t understand where any of this is coming from and quite frankly, it’s a little out of the blue for us as well. o   Joyce shows up and goes uber-mom on Angel, telling him that if he really cared about Buffy he would let her go so that she could have a normal life. o   Angel looks as though Joyce is merely confirming what he has already been thinking. o   Angel has a dream in which he and Buffy are wed and when they step out into the sunlight Buffy is engulfed in flames and crumbles to ashes. o   That night while on patrol in the sewers, Angel lays his cards on the table. o   He still loves Buffy, but their relationship can never be normal. Xander is taking a cross country roadtrip, Willow got into every college everywhere.  HMPC 0318 – Earshot | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:23

Here is the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series Season 3, Episode 18 - Earshot. Things got a little weird in this episode of the podcast but hopefully if nothing else it will be thought provoking. Speaking of thought provoking, be sure to check out the latest Buffy podcast, Buffy Thoughts (http://www.virtueandjoy.net/buffy/) from the Midwestern Watcher. I think that in a day or two there may be some special content associated with this episode that was recommended by Bob. HMPC 0318 “Earshot”  - Buffy The Vampire Slayer * Hello Sunnydale and welcome to the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Series, Season 3 Episode 18 titled “Earshot” * Buffy thoughts o   A new Buffy podcast which is quite different. o   Not an episode review, it is taking one ‘thought’ about the Buffyverse and taking a closer look at that particular theme or event. o   It’s different from the other Buffy podcasts out there and I think all of you will enjoy it, heres a promo for Buffy Thoughts. o   Play promo o   Link to website in the show notes for this episode. * 2-Minute Buffy o   Two demons chasing Buffy fall for the old run and stumble. o   She dispatches one of them but not until in ‘infects’ her with it’s blood. o   Turns out Buffy has been infected with an aspect of the demon. She worries that she’ll get horns, a tail, or wait… was it a boy demon. o   The rest of Sunnydale high is consumed with the basketball team being in the state championships. o   Turns out the aspect she gets is the ability to read minds. It starts out as being a handy ability but quickly becomes a nuisance as Buffy is subjected to every student’s thoughts in the school. o   One particular thought spells out the death of many of the students at lunch tomorrow. o   The onslaught of inner monologues overwhelms Buffy and she goes home to try and recuperate. o   The scoobies do their own investigation trying to find out who the potential murderer is. o   Meanwhile Giles, Wesley and Angel work to remove this ability from Buffy before it drives her insane. o   The scoobies narrow it down to the newspaper writer Freddy but when confronted he has no idea what they are talking about. o   Buffy freed from everyone’s thoughts shows up to try and stop the murder. Freddy has provided them with a lead that Jonathan is going to do something. o   Buffy finds Jonathan in the tower about to shoot himself, not anyone else. She talks him out of suicide but still has to find the murderer. o   Unbeknownst to Buffy, but knownst to us, Xander has already found her, the lunch lady that girl is poison o   Buffy shows up in the cafeteria, hijinks ensue and the lunch lady is stopped. o   Unfortunately, the damage has already been done, Buffy now knows that her mom and Giles got it on, on the hood of a police car… twice. * So let’s get to the disussion o   This episode is largely about communication or peoples failure to communicate. §  In an episode about failure to communicate, what does buffy fight but these demons with no mouths, appropriate. §  After gaining the ability to read peoples minds, Buffy finds out just how much is being left unsaid at the high-school. §  This relates to Buffy and Angel’s relationship as well as every high-school student everywhere. §  I think it is important that this episode emphasizes that the pain and frustration are present in all of the students. §  When Buffy talks to Jonathan it’s the popular kids, the jocks, the beautiful people. §  I think that it is difficult in high school to look around and realize the in-crowd many times is just as pained as you. §  If these students were able to talk to each other they might be able to help each other. But that would be seen as weakness and they must maintain pretences. o   The scene in the library when Buffy tells the scoobies that she can read minds is priceless,

 HMPC 0317 – Enemies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:52

Don't forget to email me at hellmouthpodcast@gmail.com and get registered for the Hellmouth Empire Forums. HMPC 0317 “Enemies”  - Buffy The Vampire Slayer * Hello Sunnydale and welcome to the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Series, Season 3 Episode 17 titled “Enemies” * 2-Minute Buffy o   Last weeks 2-minute buffy was more like an 8 minute Buffy so I am going to try and trim it down this week because this episode is pretty straight forward. o   Buffy and Angel leave a very ‘artistic movie’ which puts the limits of their troubled relationship in the forefront. o   A demon tries to sell the slayers the Books of Ascension o   While Buffy tells the Scoobies about the books, Faith is making the demon and ‘offer he can’t refuse’ on behalf of the mayor. o   After killing the demon Faith turns to Angel, tries to seduce him to give him a moment of happiness and remove his soul. o   Angel resists and tells Faith that Buffy is the only slayer in his life… but they can still be friends. o   The mayor has a plan B for Angel and tells Faith not to worry. o   Buffy, with Xander’s help and wallet, locates this mysterious demon with the books of ascension and goes to meet him with Faith. o   They find him already dead and Faith seems to know a little bit too much about this dead demon. o   Buffy has been struggling with the fact that she saw Faith and Angel rather cozy the night before and at the prompting of Willow decides to go confront him about it, and make a few plans behind the scenes. o   Faith shows up at the mansion with the help of a mysterious mage, casts a spell on Angel to remove his soul. Angelus is back! o   The scoobies go to the hall of records to try and find out more about the mayor and find out that he looks really good for his age – of over 100. o   The mayor instructs Faith and Angelus to kill Buffy, how original. o   Faith and Angel trick Buffy into coming to the mansion where they attack her and chain her up. o   Faith, being the somewhat sub-par evil-doer that she is, monologues… ahh the infamous villain’s monologue and as usual gives up far more of the mayor’s evil plans that she intended. o   At that point Angel thanks the academy, his family and tells jesus to suck it. He hasn’t lost his soul it was all a ruse to try and fish information out of Faith. o   Hijinks ensue, Faith gets away but the scoobies realize that she is no longer fighting on their side. o   This is a setback but the mayor doesn’t seem overly concerned that the slayer has lived to fight another day. o   Buffy and Angel’s relationship however has been damaged and Buffy decides she needs a bit of a break but she tells Angel in the words of grammy award winner Paula Abdul “ I’m forever your girl” * So let’s get to the disussion * Buffy and Angel leave the artistic porn movie and talk about o   Their relationship o   The limits of their relationship o   Buffy’s sadness that they can’t be together like that. o   How it affects Angel. o   Then Buffy sees Faith acting intimate with Angel and it bothers her. She doesn’t actually talk to Angel about it until Willow orders her to. o * Faith tries to seduce Angel in order to give him that moment of happiness to lose his soul. o   I think this shows Faith’s distorted views about sex, love and happiness. o   I think there is one moment in this scene where Faith is not trying to con Angel. I think at the end when she asks the whole ‘another time, another place’ question. I think Faith is sincerely curious about whether Angel could ever love her. o   The mayor has put her up to this o   As much as we talk about the Mayor loving faith like a father, he is whoring her out in this episode.

HMPC 0314 “Bad Girls”  - Buffy The Vampire Slayer * Hello Sunnydale and welcome to the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Series, Season 3 Episode 14 titled “Bad Girls” * 2-Minute Buffy o   Buffy and Faith are slaying in the cemetery as Faith tries to get Buffy to kiss and tell about whether or not Bander ever happened off camera. o   The dedication is coming up pretty soon and the mayor wants things to go off without a hitch so these vampires that are in town need to be watched. o   We meet Wesley Windham Price, watcher extraordinaire, debonair and spiffy-haired that he is. He is please to meet Buffy, she is not so pleased. o   Giles enjoys playing the role of silent. sarcastic, anarchist when Wesley is around. o   Wesley informs Buffy that the vamps she killed are remnants of a sect that served Balthazaar a demon that is long dead. He orders her to go retrieve the amulet they are looking for which goes over quite well. Quite well meaning horribly bad o   Wesley meets Faith and finds her to be a woman of few words, “Screw that” to be exact. o   Faith and Buffy retrieve the amulet that night and Buffy gets a little taste of what it feels like to be Faith the carefree, reckless slayer. She likes it. o   Buffy gives the amulet to Wesley who then lectures Buffy on the three key words for any Slayer: preparation, preparation, preparation. o   But the years of training with Giles are too much for Buffy who quickly realizes that that is in fact not three words but one word three times. o   Buffy begins pushing away the Scoobies and her responsibilities at school in favor of getting closer to Faith and embracing the inner force that she becomes when she is slaying with Faith. o   Buffy does another naughty dance only this time it is with Faith at the bronze. o   Angel shows up, lurking, warning of evil, takes the amulet, departure. Pretty much standard Angel. o   Turns out Balthazaar isn’t dead although without a thigh-master and low carb diet pretty soon he will wish he was. o   He is marinating and ordering his minions to bring him the amulet and kill the slayers. o   Faith and Buffy decide to take on Balthazaar, Faith explains to Buffy that what a slayer wants, a slayer gets. They also gets arrested. o   Back in the library, Wesley is criticizing Giles’ methods which turns out to be a big no-no for Giles. o   They get kidnapped and taken to Balthazaar o   That night on patrol Faith accidently kills the deputy mayor. o   The two slayers awwwwww freak out! o   Angel finds Buffy as she flees the scene and tells her that Giles has been taken. o   She and Angel go to the warehouse, Hijinks ensue o   Buffy saves Giles, kills Balthazaar, oh and Wesley survives by cowering in the back. o   The Mayor’s dedication goes well and he is now invincible for the next 100 days, good for his plans of ascension, bad for the Scoobies. o   Buffy goes to talk to Faith about what happened and finds Faith to be quite sociopathic. Whatever closeness they had in the last few days is now back to the same Faith who is withdrawn and callous. o   End Episode * Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under o   Bad Girls-Originally,the Wesley character was going to be abit like Michael J. Fox in 'Back to the Future' movies. But in the end, the writers decided to make Giles cooler and rebellious by making Wesley so straight-laced.
