Here is the fourth episode of the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 episode, Teacher's Pet. In this podcast we will recap the episode and discuss a few topics that I found interesting: Buffy, Angel and their budding relationship Xander and his hot steamy bug-lovin' The "After School Special" moments from Buffy The always present conflict between Buffy Summers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Joss Whedon strikes again in the Buffyverse reminding us that no one is safe in Sunnydale. I look forward to hearing from all of you at hellmouthpodcast@gmail.com... ------------------------ Show Notes ------------------------ Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Season 1 Episode 4 “Teacher’s Pet” * Opening, Buffy in sexy red satin dress is at the bronze fighting a vampire. * Is the red satin dress a blood reference/symbol? * She is having a hard time dealing with this vampire; he doesn’t seem hurt too much by her punches. * Xander walks up behind the vampire and says, “May I cut in?” Then proceeds to beat the crap out of the vampire. * Buffy “You hurt your hand, will you still be able to…?” * Xander “Finish my solo then kiss you like you’ve never been kissed before.” * As he walks away, the vampire gets up; Xander breaks a leg off of one of the chairs at the bronze and throws it, stakes vampire. * What is with these crappy chairs at the bronze, anyone can just reach down and break a leg off of one. * Probably a reference to episode 1 when Buffy does this by the bathrooms looking for willow. * Xander gets back on stage and starts wailing on electric guitar. * Buffy walks towards the stage with a lustful look in her eye and says “you’re drooling” * Big reveal, Xander was dreaming. Not a stretch of the imagination to pick up on that one. * Furthering this idea that Xander is infatuated with Buffy. * Back in Biology lab. Talking about insects. * Bio teacher (Dr. Gregory) comes down hard on Buffy for not reading the homework assignment. * Tells her that the principal let him see her permanent record. * Another jab at the infamous record that students have. * Turns out, the teacher is hard on her because he expects great things from her. Tells her if she applied herself she could do very well and make the principal and the others eat that permanent record. * This is one of those moments, those examples that no one is safe in the Buffyverse. We are quickly brought to like this teacher. * Mostly because we all wished we had a teacher in school that believed in us like that. * Immediately some big monster insect kills this teacher. * Side note, how many of you had a Dr. as a high school teacher? * Did anyone have a teacher like Dr. Gregory that believed in you like that? * Credits * Back at bronze * Xander is on the prowl. * Some high school boy (Blayne) is talking about his female conquests. * He teases Xander about how many times he has scored. * Xander to try and preserve his man-card walks over to Buffy and Willow and puts his arms around them putting on a show for Blayne and his buddy about how much of a player Xander is. * Willow is more than happy to oblige. * Buffy is quickly distracted when she sees Angel there at the Bronze. * Willow and Xander haven’t met Angel at this point, but Willow assumes his identity and informs Xander. * Xander immediately goes into evaluation mode, sizing up the competition. * “He’s a very attractive man, how come that never came up?” * They banter about how Buffy is not really glad to see him, obvious flirting. Says that he is just there to give her some cryptic warning and disappear. * He sees that she is physically cold and gives her his jacket. * After Angel removes his jacket, she sees that he is hurt,

Back with episode 0102 of the Hellmouth Podcast. Thanks to everyone who suffered through the audio issues in the "Welcome to the Hellmouth" episode. Buffy fights to stop The Harvest The Slayer and her new friends learn that Sunnydale is not always Sunny. ---------------------- Show Notes ------------------------ Buffy The Vampire Slayer 0102 – The Harvest * Special thanks to Aminos (mispronounced) for the use of A Calmer Storm as the music for the podcast. * Opens where we left off, Luke going to bite Buffy. * Is thwarted by the cross Angel gave her. * Buffy goes out into the graveyard and hears willow and xander being attacked. * She fights off the vampires. * Can’t find Jesse, he was grabbed by Darla and taken to the master. * Credits * Library scene where Giles tells them about how the earth originated. * Demons walking the earth. Made it their hell * Certain magicks and creatures are what is left of that early beginning. * Xander and Willow are being initiated into Buffy’s world of things that go bump in the night. * Xander is still in disbelief, Buffy goes through all of the reasoning that she has been through before. * Willow believes it but is silently freaked out. * The last demon to leave this reality fed on a human and drank his blood. * Origination of vampires. Now the first man was possessed by the demon’s soul. He bit another and then another and so on. * Giles: “And so they walk the Earth, feeding, killing some, … waiting for the animals to die out and the old ones to return. * Giles seems surprisingly accepting of the fact that Willow and Xander know about Buffy. * We see Giles aversion to technology. * Jesse is delivered to the Master * Master is upset that Darla bit him first. * He doesn’t want her scraps. * Darla tells the master about Buffy, at this point they realize she is a slayer. * Library – Giles tells Willow and Xander the summary about Buffy being a slayer and tells them to keep it a secret. * Willow is still freaked. * Willow asks if they should call the police. * This is a good first question even though they blow it off. It may seem like the answer is obvious, but I think this is the natural thought progression for someone like willow and I am glad that they included it. * This is the intro to Willow being a computer whiz. Looking for city plans that detail the tunnels under the city. * Master’s Lair furthering discussion about slayer. * He tells Luke she can’t interfere with the Harvest, they decide to use Jesse as bait to lure her to the underground church. * Luke: “I thought you nothing more than a meal boy. Congratulations, you’ve just been upgraded to bait.” * You get the impression that maybe they are going to leave him alive to use him as bait. The twist comes when you find out they turned him into a vampire and then used him as bait. * Buffy and Willow are using the Internet to look at the city plans. * Buffy is frustrated, she was obviously unprepared. She is sort of starting to realize this is her responsibility. * This may seem like a 180 from her attitude in welcome to the Hellmouth but I think they are trying to make a stepwise transition. At this point Buffy’s concern is simply going in to save a friend from vampires. I think in her mind this is a rationalization. She is not accepting her duties as a slayer fully her concern is Jesse. I think that in her mind she felt like, I will go in and save Jesse and then go back to trying to get away from all of this. * It is when we find out about the Master’s Master Plan that she takes another step to embracing her destiny. * She realizes the mausoleum is the entrance to the lair.

Really sets the tone for the series from the beginning about how women are not damsels in distress. They can be the bad guys as well. Darla – First Vampire we see. Darla Buffy having visions of the Master and a few other season 1 baddies. Actor – Jesse David Boreanz credited as guest star. Jesse might as well have Star Trek Red Shirt on. Didn’t like xander at all in the first episode. Attitude, way he talked. How does Willow make you love her so quickly? Intro of Willow, Xander, Jesse Meeting with Principal Flutie Burned down the gym – reference to movie Saw the movie – accept cannon refuse to accept the existence of the film. In defense of Whedon… Ridiculous rings Looks like a ring pop Charisma Carpenter The Bronze – anything to say Library, love, love, love the library. Intro of Giles Vampyr – the book misspelled or written in old language – says I am an old, old book. Aphrodesia “What kind of name is Buffy?” She is named Aphrodesia… - funny her friends name was Aura Willow’s Bowling pin, geek detail. Buffy talks to willow about tutoring Xander shows up and another example of him being annoying. Xander returns stake “building a really little fence” Dead guy in the locker, Buffy goes to library Buffy confronts Giles The slayer, Giles mantra that plays during the intro. Audio Clip Giles tells Buffy about mystical convergence, which we will later learn, is called the Hellmouth. Time Life series reference, classic. Prepare me speech, setting up Buffy’s series struggle Xander hiding in the stacks, learns of Buffy’s secret sort of. Cool transition of scene from front of school with bus driving by down into the master’s lair as if you are sinking in the earth. This guy has played at least 50 bad guys throughout the course of this series. List the other baddies he has played. Reciting as though from a written prophecy “the world will bleed.” Might be referring to the Codex we learn about later. “Hi, I’m an enormous slut!” looking for clothes to wear to the bronze – funny Kristine Sutherland – Buffy’s Mom great actress. Talking to Buffy as she get’s dressed for the bronze. Introduction of Angel – Cool Angel Line “I’m a friend” “Didn’t say I was yours.” Audio Clip - Pic Wasn’t sure what to think of Angel at first. Gonna make a fist and fight with a ring pop on your hand. First reference to the “mouth of hell” The Bronze – so many scenes, important scenes happen here all the way at least through season 6. This is our first visit. Live music features a lot of contemporary acts that were popular at the time and also gave some exposure to lesser-known acts. Willow sitting eating a box of raisins… geek detail. “I really didn’t like him” referring to Angel. Vampire spotted because he has horrible fashion. “Excuse me I have to call everyone I have ever met, right now!” – Cordelia Audio Clip after Buffy attacks her. Jesse is seen talking to Darla as Buffy is leaving the Bronze. – He is toast. Back to Master’s Lair Master rises out of a pool of blood. Very creepy. Mark Metcalf makes a fantastic evil master vampire. Willow and fashion victim vamp walking through cemetery.
