HMPC 0317 “Enemies”  - Buffy The Vampire Slayer * Hello Sunnydale and welcome to the Hellmouth Podcast for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Series, Season 3 Episode 17 titled “Enemies” * 2-Minute Buffy o   Last weeks 2-minute buffy was more like an 8 minute Buffy so I am going to try and trim it down this week because this episode is pretty straight forward. o   Buffy and Angel leave a very ‘artistic movie’ which puts the limits of their troubled relationship in the forefront. o   A demon tries to sell the slayers the Books of Ascension o   While Buffy tells the Scoobies about the books, Faith is making the demon and ‘offer he can’t refuse’ on behalf of the mayor. o   After killing the demon Faith turns to Angel, tries to seduce him to give him a moment of happiness and remove his soul. o   Angel resists and tells Faith that Buffy is the only slayer in his life… but they can still be friends. o   The mayor has a plan B for Angel and tells Faith not to worry. o   Buffy, with Xander’s help and wallet, locates this mysterious demon with the books of ascension and goes to meet him with Faith. o   They find him already dead and Faith seems to know a little bit too much about this dead demon. o   Buffy has been struggling with the fact that she saw Faith and Angel rather cozy the night before and at the prompting of Willow decides to go confront him about it, and make a few plans behind the scenes. o   Faith shows up at the mansion with the help of a mysterious mage, casts a spell on Angel to remove his soul. Angelus is back! o   The scoobies go to the hall of records to try and find out more about the mayor and find out that he looks really good for his age – of over 100. o   The mayor instructs Faith and Angelus to kill Buffy, how original. o   Faith and Angel trick Buffy into coming to the mansion where they attack her and chain her up. o   Faith, being the somewhat sub-par evil-doer that she is, monologues… ahh the infamous villain’s monologue and as usual gives up far more of the mayor’s evil plans that she intended. o   At that point Angel thanks the academy, his family and tells jesus to suck it. He hasn’t lost his soul it was all a ruse to try and fish information out of Faith. o   Hijinks ensue, Faith gets away but the scoobies realize that she is no longer fighting on their side. o   This is a setback but the mayor doesn’t seem overly concerned that the slayer has lived to fight another day. o   Buffy and Angel’s relationship however has been damaged and Buffy decides she needs a bit of a break but she tells Angel in the words of grammy award winner Paula Abdul “ I’m forever your girl” * So let’s get to the disussion * Buffy and Angel leave the artistic porn movie and talk about o   Their relationship o   The limits of their relationship o   Buffy’s sadness that they can’t be together like that. o   How it affects Angel. o   Then Buffy sees Faith acting intimate with Angel and it bothers her. She doesn’t actually talk to Angel about it until Willow orders her to. o * Faith tries to seduce Angel in order to give him that moment of happiness to lose his soul. o   I think this shows Faith’s distorted views about sex, love and happiness. o   I think there is one moment in this scene where Faith is not trying to con Angel. I think at the end when she asks the whole ‘another time, another place’ question. I think Faith is sincerely curious about whether Angel could ever love her. o   The mayor has put her up to this o   As much as we talk about the Mayor loving faith like a father, he is whoring her out in this episode.
