Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin with the bad news: the stress reaction in Jacob deGrom’s scapula that’s going to cost him about two months of his season. It’s a huge blow to the Mets and we discuss whether the team will be able to weather the storm. Next, we talk about the trade that almost was (Dominic Smith to the Padres for Eric Hosmer, Chris Paddack, and Emilio Pagan) and the trade that actually was (Miguel Castro to the Yankees for Joely Rodríguez). We note what a travesty it is that Miguel Castro had to shave his beard and dreadlocks due to the Yankees’ archaic (and discriminatory) hair policy. We also discuss the more minor, but still potentially concerning injuries in camp (Nimmo’s neck, Scherzer’s hamstring, etc.) and name Our Dudes for the 2022 season. In our baseball segment this week, we discuss improving conditions for minor leaguers and areas that still need improvement. We also talk about Trevor Bauer’s defamation lawsuit against Molly Knight and The Athletic and how it indicates that he is more interested in painting his accuser as a liar than he is in returning to the mound for the Dodgers. She is the highest-ranking woman to hold a baseball operations role in the team’s history. Liz previously served as Senior Coordinator of baseball operations for Major League baseball and also was the first woman to play in the New York Metro Baseball League. She has a Masters in Philosophy from Columbia University and is an Adjunct Lecturer at Lehman College. In honor of Ponce De Leon and the Fountain of Youth, the team discusses players who had incredible careers on the wrong side of 40 in Promote, Extend, Trade. Next, Steve, Lukas, Ken, and Thomas give updates on their Way-Too-Early Draft Special players of interest. After that, the team reviews their predictions for the 2021 season made last year. Following that, the team gives their predictions for the 2022 minor league season, split into mild, medium, and spicy takes. Steve thinks that Jake Mangum will be a top 10 prospect in the system, the 2022 Brooklyn Cyclones will have the best rotation since the legendary 2012 rotation, and that Matthew Allan will drop out of the top 10 prospect list in 2023. Lukas thinks that Nick Plummer will have 150+ league average or better at-bats in 2022, Dominic Hamel will be an elite RP prospect by the end of the season, and Joel Diaz will be a top-100 prospect in baseball by the end of the season. Ken thinks that the Mets will draft at least 3 top 10 2023 prospects in the 2022 MLB Draft, Francisco Alvarez is a top 5 prospect in baseball heading into the 2023 season, and Brett Baty hits 35 homers across all levels in 2022. Thomas thinks that Brett Baty will hit more fly balls, Eric Orze becomes an important member of the 2022 Mets’ bullpen, and that Francisco Alvarez will be the third catcher on the Mets’ depth chart by 2023. Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. A New Jersey native who starred at Seton Hall, Rick Cerone seemed perfectly suited to play baseball in New York. It just took him a little while to get there.  Drafted in the first round by Cleveland, Cerone was traded to the expansion Toronto Blue Jays, where he caught the first game in franchise history and established himself.  Cerone was traded home to the Yankees in 1980 following Thurman Munson’s tragic death. He had a career year in 1980 before clashing with George Steinbrenner and getting exiled—and brought back again.  After his third departure from the Yankees, the 37 year old was anxious to stay close to home and play for a contender. The 1991 Mets would seem to fill both bills.
