A Pod of Their Own, Episode 134: Player to be named much later | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6336

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin by discussing the news that Jacob deGrom’s simulated game was delayed until Thursday and try to figure out how nervous we should be about it.  Then, we reflect on the first half of the 2022 Mets season. We each give our MVPs and LVPs of the first half and discuss potential trade targets for the Mets, which amazingly enough now includes Juan Soto. Next, we talk about some interesting things Rob Manfred said to the media yesterday, including that he “rejects the premise” that minor leaguers don’t make a living wage and disputes Dr. Meredith Wills’ research about the two baseballs.  Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.  You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show.  UnforMETable, Episode 88: Lance Johnson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1970

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Lance Johnson was a solid center fielder for the White Sox for a number of seasons, ranking among the American League leaders in stolen bases many seasons, and leading the league in triples for four straight seasons. The Mets signed Johnson as a free agent prior to the 1996 season, hoping to add that stability to center field and to the leadoff spot in their order. Johnson went on to deliver one of the finest seasons in team history, setting franchise records for hits and triples in a season that still stand, on his way to his one and only All Star season.  From Complex To Queens, Episode 177: The first round | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3147

Welcome to From Complex to Queens, the Amazin’ Avenue podcast focusing on the Mets’ minor league system. With the 2022 MLB Draft going on in the background, Steve, Lukas, and Thomas were joined by Baseball Prospectus senior prospect writer and evaluation coordinator and For All You Kids co-host Jarrett Seidler. With the 11th overall pick, the Mets selected Kevin Parada, a catcher from Georgia Tech. With the 14th overall pick, the Mets selected Jett Williams, a shortstop from Rockwell-Heath High School in Heath, Texas. Were there any shocking selections prior to the Mets’ first pick? Did the Mets gloss over a player who was clearly heads-and-shoulders more talented than either Parada or Williams? Overall, how did the Mets do in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft?  UnforMETable, Episode 87: Jeff McKnight | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1648

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Drafted in the second round by the Mets in 1983, the scrappy Jeff McKnight would toil in the minors for seven years before making his MLB debut for the still powerful 1989 Mets team, in Keith Hernandez’s final season in New York. McKnight would be released and spend a couple of years in Baltimore before returning to Queens for the final few seasons of his career. The utility player would appear at every position but center field and pitcher in his career, and his perhaps best remembered for being one of the first in a series of obscure Mets to sport uniform number 17 before it was taken out of rotation and ultimately retired in honor of Hernandez. Welcome to Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), the new/old favorite from Amazin’ Avenue editors Chris McShane and Brian Salvatore. The Mets have one of their co-aces back and, despite them giving him no run support in his return, took 4 of 6 from the lowly Rangers and Reds since we last spoke.  UnforMETable, Episode 86: Richard Hidalgo [rebroadcast] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1243

Note: Rob is away this week, and so we are rebroadcasting an episode with a tie to today’s date, July 5. Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past. This week, guest host Brian Salvatore traces the career of former Met Richard Hidalgo. Hildalgo came up with the Astros, had an amazing year in 2000, and a very good year in 2003 before coming over to the Mets in a trade in June of 2004. He hit 21 home runs in the summer of 2004, only to depart the team in the off-season. Some of the things discussed in this episode: his connection to Bobby Abreau, his son signing with the Marlins, his abandoned ‘field of dreams,’ and the time the dude was shot during a carjacking, but played profession baseball just a few months later.  A Pod of Their Own, Episode 131: Tin foil hats off | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5378

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin by emphasizing that the Mets cannot get out of the month of June fast enough. The Astros seem to have the Mets’ number, but they will at least escape June with a winning record, although a much smaller NL East lead than they had before. We also try not to put on our tin foil hats about Max Scherzer, whose rehab start was delayed. We discuss the return of other injured Mets, like Colin Holderman and James McCann. We also discuss the case for the Mets’ “fringe” All-Stars, of which there are quite a few! Next, we cover various odds and ends throughout the league. We talk about baseball’s new uniform “muddy” ball technique, the brawl between the Mariners and the Angels, the Mets sitting down with the Advocates for Minor Leaguers, and more. UnforMETable, Episode 85: Steve Renko | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1862

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. A three-sport star at the University of Kansas, Steve Renko would choose the baseball path over the dangers of football. Drafted by the Mets as a pitcher/outfielder, he would start out as a hitting prospect before transitioning to pitching. Renko would begin to zip through the minors as a pitching prospect, catching the eye and the favor of Gil Hodges. However, before he could make his debut in Queens for an up-and-coming 1969 Mets team, Renko would become a key piece in a deadline deal which would bring in future World Series MVP Donn Clendenon.
