A Pod of Their Own, Episode 123: Baseballs, humidors, and normal forces with Dr. Meredith Wills | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3994

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we went live on the Amazin’ Avenue Facebook page with Dr. Meredith Wills to talk about the 2022 baseballs, which appear deader than ever.  We talk about the effect the humidor might be having on the ball and why it might be causing the inconsistency Chris Bassitt and others seem to be noticing with the balls this year.  We also discuss the differences between the Rawlings baseball used by MLB and the balls used during the Olympics, which players liked better. Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.  You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! And you can find us on the Stitcher app, Spotify, or listen wherever you get podcasts. You can follow A Pod of Their Own on Twitter (@apodoftheirown) and you can also follow our co-hosts on Twitter: Allison McCague (@PetitePhD), Maggie Wiggin (@maggie162), and Linda Surovich (@LindaSurovich).  UnforMETable, Episode 78: Chris Jelic | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1481

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. A two-sport start at the University of Pittsburgh, Chris Jelic was drafted by the Kansas City Royals, who would trade him—and future star David Cone—to the Mets for catcher Ed Hearn prior to the 1987 season. Jelic would toil in the minors for parts of six seasons before getting a brief call up to the Mets in September of 1990. At the tail end of a disappointing pennant race for New York, Jelic would record the only 11 professional at-bats of his career, and would make his only professional hit a memorable one—a home run in his final career at bat. As always, you can listen or subscribe to this and all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. The Mets are a good baseball team, and are doing the things that good baseball teams do.  A Pod of Their Own, Episode 122: The Mets are Good?! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2471

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin with a celebration of the Mets’ improbable comeback win against the Cardinals and the fact that the Mets very well may be a Good baseball team.  Next, we talk about the odd sequence of events that was the update on Jacob deGrom, which was very Metsy, but culminated in (mostly) good news.  We then discuss the tough choices the Mets will have to make with the roster come May 1 when rosters shrink from 28 to 26. We make the argument that Robinson Canó is not the answer for this team moving forward. In a quick baseball segment this week, we talk about how the baseball is dead again; we will cover that in greater depth next week when we have Dr. Meredith Wills back on the show. We also provide a quick update on Trevor Bauer, who has now sued the woman who accused him of sexual assault. UnforMETable, Episode 77: John Candelaria | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1923

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Born in Brooklyn, John Candelaria was a key member of the successful Pittsburgh Pirates teams of the late 1970s, culminating in the team’s 1979 World Series victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Candelaria eventually got traded to the Angels—coming within one game of facing his hometown team in the 1986 World Series. As the 1987 Mets were beset by injuries in their efforts to repeat as World Champions—including a key September injury to Ron Darling—the team brought in the veteran lefty in a last ditch effort to catch the Cardinals.  A Pod of Their Own, Episode 121: When the Doc’s away... | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4043

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin by discussing the Mets’ thrilling victory earlier in the day led by Francisco Lindor and how well he has played so far this season. We remain concerned about the bullpen but the offense and starting pitching have been carrying the team. Next, we talk about the new sensory nook the Mets installed in Citi Field in an effort to be more inclusive to fans. UnforMETable, Episode 76: Randy Tate | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1682

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Randy Tate was a young left-handed starter in the Mets’ organization with a strong arm but a lack of control. Tate had one large and key supporter in the organization—manager Yogi Berra. Going into the 1975 season, Berra saw the 22 year old Tate as a perfect fit for the rotation behind his incredible top three of Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Jon Matlack. Tate had the type of up-and-down season one might expect from a young hurler, perfectly encapsulated in one game on August 4, 1975, when Tate took a no-hitter into the eighth at Shea, only to lose it—and the game—in quick succession. The game seemed to mark the end of Berra’s reign as manager, as he was fired after the next day’s doubleheader sweep. Next, they give updates on their Way-Too-Early Draft Special players of interests. After, the guys review the Syracuse Mets, Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Brooklyn Cyclones, and St. Lucie Mets seasons so far.
