Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.  This week, we begin by discussing the blow to the Mets’ rotation in the loss of Max Scherzer for 6-8 weeks. We talk about how they can weather the storm (which probably won’t involve more starts from Thomas Szapucki) and how Tuesday’s loss was encouraging, even if it was infuriating. Next, we talk about Josh Donaldson’s racist remarks toward Tim Anderson. We encourage you to listen to the words of Bradford William Davis on this issue. For all the flack we gave the Yankees that chose to defend Donaldson (which was far from a unanimous sentiment), we gave the organization credit for partnering with the Rays to acknowledge the tragedy in Texas this week by tweeting out factoids about the gun violence epidemic in America during last night’s game. Sports have always been political and we applaud the Rays and Yankees for using their platforms for good. Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. The 2006 Mets came within a two runs of winning the National League pennant and making it to the World Series for the first time since 2000. The 2007 Mets came within a game of making the postseason. In 2008, history repeated itself, as the team was eliminated from postseason play on their last day of the regular season by the Florida Marlins for the second straight year. With Jose Reyes and David Wright emerging as budding stars, a third homegrown phenom would have made all the difference, and that was exactly what Brian Cole was expected to be. Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past. Roberto Petagine was a solid prospect with an excellent batting eye who lacked the power traditionally required of first basemen. Petagine seemed to plateau in AAA, excelling there but struggling to break through on the major league level. Petagine played well for Bobby Valentine at AAA Norfolk in 1996, earning himself some time in the majors once Valentine took over from the fired Dallas Green. However, the Mets’ offseason acquisition of John Olerud closed any windows to regular playing time for Petagine. Still, he would earn a late season call up in 1997, and play a crucial role in a memorable Mets comeback in a big September game.
