Daniel J. Callaghan is today's show dedication - He was A Veteran born on July 26, 1890. Today is his birthday & his hero's welcome home from CPT. He was a United States Navy officer who received the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. In a career spanning just over 30 years, he served his country in two wars. He served on several ships during his first 20 years of service, including escort duties during World War I, and also filled some shore-based administrative roles. He later came to the attention of US President Franklin Roosevelt, who appointed Callaghan as his Naval Aide in 1938. In one of his most direct statements on gun control since his election, President Barack Obama Wednesday called for a "common sense" approach to assault rifle sales in light of Friday's mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., saying no "mentally unbalanced individual" should be able to get their hands on such weapons.  A terrifying shooting at an Aurora movie theater overnight left 12 people dead and about 38 people hurt.The shooting happened at about 12:30 a.m. at the Town Center in Aurora at the Century 16 theater on East Alameda Avenue. Reports first came in that there were explosions in the theater showing the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises.” Shots then rang out, and a frantic scene followed.Police said a gunman with a gas mask on and dressed in black shot and killed dozens and dozens of people. Authorities say the suspect, James Holmes, 24, killed 10 people inside the theater complex and that three others died after they were taken from the scene. A three-month-old was among the dozens who were hurt, but the baby was treated and released from the hospital.“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Chief Dan Oates said.Officials at The Medical Center of Aurora confirmed that some of their patients had to be treated for chemical exposure. DNA testing of his niece and nephew prove the remains are his. The remains of the Oklahoma native were found beginning in 2009 by members of the Defense Department's Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command. The crash site was among those sought during a three-year effort to comb the islands around Espiritu Santo, a key naval and air base during the war. In an interview with police released Monday under a judge's order, the woman said she was fondled, groped and kissed by Zimmerman beginning when she was 6 and he was about 8. She said it continued until she was about 16. The woman, identified as witness No. 9, said they would see each other at family gatherings, but their relationship was removed from the audio recording.   Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, had fought the release, calling it an ``uncorroborated, irrelevant statement'' in court documents. He did not respond to a phone call seeking comment.   Zimmerman, 28, is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 death of the 17-year-old Martin, who was unarmed when he was killed in a community in Sanford. Zimmerman claims Martin attacked him. Chicago's mayor and police superintendent publicly defended their new gang-fighting strategy Monday amid growing criticism that the changes are failing and a big reason why the city's homicide rate has soared this year.After weeks of media reports about Chicago homicides – which so far are up nearly 38 percent from last year – Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy defiantly said during a news conference that the gang strategies in place before McCarthy arrived were the ones that failed, not the new ones.

The Act was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. 2. National Prohibition Act - The National Prohibition Act (P.L. 66-66, 41 Stat. 305), also known as the Volstead Act, was adopted by Congress in 1919 to implement the recently ratified Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. For nearly a century, temperance crusaders had attempted to impose abstinence from alcohol on American society, and the Volstead Act became the fullest expression of their effort. The act became as well known as the constitutional amendment on which it rested. In April 1933 Congress relaxed the terms of the Volstead Act, and for many Americans this represented the end of National Prohibition even before states completed the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment eight months later.
