Advanced Audio Blog S2 #3 - Top 10 Finnish Tourist Destinations: Karhunkierros Trek | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:32

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! Lupia on saatavilla monista paikoista aloituskaupunki Kuusamosta. ----Formal English---- The Karhunkierros Trek The Karhunkierros Trek, also known as the Bear's Trail, is one of the most popular hiking and snowshoeing destinations in all of Finland. It is located in the southeastern part of Finland's portion of Lapland. The trail connects the municipalities of Kuusamo and Salla. About fifteen-thousand backpackers take the trail each year, and most of them do it between July and September. Most of the trail's fifty miles are inside the Oulanka National Park. Hikers typically start at one of the two most popular start locations. The most popular starting place is Hautajarvi, although Ristikallio is a close second. Another hiking trail in the area is Little Bear's Ring, which is considerably shorter, taking only about a day, and covers part of the longer Karhunkierros Trek. The trek takes several days to traverse, and hikers are welcome to either bring their own tent or use one of the eight overnight cabins that are available along the path. It is free to stay in those cabins or to make a short stop in one of the two huts that are available for a break during the day's hiking. Hikers who do bring their own camping equipment should be advised that they must pitch their tents within the areas that are actually designated as camping locations. On average, it takes anywhere between four days and a week to hike the full length of the trail. In addition to hiking and snowshoeing, another very popular activity along the trail is fishing, but travelers need a license to fish. Licenses are available in many locations in the starting town of Kuusamo. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #1 - Top 10 Finnish Tourist Destinations: Inari | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:35

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Inari Inarin kunta on pinta-alaltaan Suomen suurin. Siida museosta turistit löytävät yhteen paikkaan koottuna paljon tietoa saamelaisesta kulttuurista. Inarissa on myös paljon metsäteollisuutta, joten yksi suosittu ajanviete turisteille on kuunnella alueen vanhojen metsureiden tarinankerrontaa, johon sisältyy paljon meistiin liittyviä myyttejä. Suuri osa tätä aluetta on julistettu suojelluksi erämaa-alueeksi. Kaikkiaan Inarissa on vähintään kuusi eri erämaa-aluetta. Toinen suosittu urheilulaji alueella on pilkkiminen. Kesäisin on suosittua harrastaa vaellusta, pyöräilyä ja telttailua. Lisäksi turistit voivat osallistua kullan huuhdontaan jollakin alueen monista kultavaltauksista, Kansainvälisessä Kultamuseossa tai Tankavaaran Kultakylässä. ----Formal English---- The municipality of Inari is the largest in the nation of Finland. However, it is very sparsely populated, with less than one person per square mile, and has four different official languages. That's more than any other area in the country! The area is a popular place for tourists to visit because it is the main location of Sami culture. The Siida Museum is where tourists can get the most information about the Sami culture in one place. The region is also a center for the lumber industry, so one of the popular activities for tourists to do is to listen to the storytelling of lumberjacks in the area, who often tell tales and myths about their trade. Inari is also home to Lake Inari, which is the third largest in the country. In addition to the lake, travelers will also find Lemmenjoki National Park and Urho Kekkonen National Park. Much of this area has been designated as a protected wilderness area. In all, there are at least six separate wilderness areas within Inari. Winter sports are popular within Inari, and there is also a very popular spa located there. There are trails for both cross-country and downhill skiing as well as eight hotels, numerous cabins available for rent, and almost twenty different eateries to choose from. Reindeer safaris are also available, and ice fishing is another popular sport that is often enjoyed in this area. During the summer, hiking, bicycling, and camping are popular. In addition, tourists may wish to go panning for gold at any of the various gold claims, the International Gold Museum, or Tankavaara Gold Village. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog #24 - Top 10 Finnish Tourist Destinations: Arktikum Arctic Museum | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:34

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Arktikum Arktinen museo, Arktikum, sijaitsee pohjoissuomalaisessa Rovaniemen kaupungissa. Museossa on kaksi pysyvää näyttelyä, joiden lisäksi siellä järjestetään ajoittain muita näyttelyitä. Joidenkin mielestä Arktikumin vaikuttavin osa on itse rakennus, jonka sisääntulossa on kaunis lasinen atrium, joka näyttää valtavalta läpinäkyvältä iglulta. Museon sisällä kävijöille on tarjolla tietoa arktisilla alueilla selviytymisestä tuhansia vuosia sitten, jolloin olot siellä olivat erityisen vaikeat. Pohjoisen keinot -näyttelyssä on esillä monia muinaisia esineitä. Arktisen keskuksen kirjastossa kävijät voivat lukea lisää elämästä alueella, muun muassa ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutuksista sekä aluetta koskevista tärkeistä poliittisista ratkaisuista. Arktikumin lisäksi monet käyvät Rovaniemen matkallaan Joulupukin luona. Paikalliset kuvaavat kaupunkiaan Joulupukin kotikaupungiksi, ja turistit käyvät tapaamassa Joulupukkia Joulupukkikylän ostoskeskuksessa, joka on oletettavasti hilpeän tonttuvanhuksen kotipaikka. ----Formal English---- Arktikum The Arktikum Arctic Museum is located in Rovaniemi, a city in the northern part of Finland. The museum has two permanent exhibits and hosts other temporary exhibits from time to time. Some consider one of the most spectacular parts of the Arktikum to be the building itself, which opens up with a beautiful glass atrium that looks like a massive clear igloo. Inside the museum, visitors will find information about how to survive in the arctic region, even when life was especially difficult there thousands of years ago. In addition to survival exhibits, there is also plenty of information and displays showing the local wildlife. There is also a cold room, which simulates the feeling of being out in the snow and ice. Another room offers a simulation of what the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, looks like. Another topic that is covered in depth at the Arktikum is climate change, which is drastically affecting life in the arctic region. Exhibits also cover how the life of the peoples who live in the area has changed as they came into contact with other cultures over the centuries. In the Northern Ways exhibit, many ancient artifacts are displayed. At the Arctic Centre Library, visitors can read more about life in the region, including the effects of climate change and important political issues in the area. Besides going to see the Arktikum, many people also go to the city of Rovaniemi to find Santa Claus. The locals refer to their city as Santa's hometown, and many tourists go to see the Santa Claus Village shopping center, which is supposedly the jolly old elf's residence. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Suomenlinnan linnoitus Suomenlinnan linnoitus on rakennettu kuudelle kallioluodolle Helsingin edustalle Suomessa. Linnoitus on mutkikas bastionilinnoitus, jonka osat liittyvät toisiinsa alueen muodostavilla pienenpienillä saarilla. Entinen sotilaslinnoitus siirtyi siviilihallintoon vuonna 1973. Nykyään kasarmialueella on museo ja siellä asuu kokonainen yhteisö. Pienillä saarilla asuu noin 900 ihmistä vakituisesti, ja lisäksi sadat ihmiset käyvät siellä työssä. Matkailijoille siellä on näytteillä myös Suomen viimeinen sukellusvene. Lisäksi Suomenlinnassa on pieni rangaistussiirtola, jonka asukkaat tekevät saarilla huoltotöitä ja ovat sitoutuneet elämään ilman laittomia huumeita. Matkailijat pääsevät linnoitukseen lautalla. Se on yksi maan suosituimpia piknik-paikkoja. Jopa paikalliset käyvät siellä piknikeillä. Saarilla asuva yhteisö käyttää historiallisia rakennuksia edelleen jokapäiväisissä toimissaan, ja linnoituksessa on aina meneillään jonkinlaisia kunnostustöitä. ----Formal English---- Fortress of Suomenlinna The Fortress of Suomenlinna sits on six skerries in Helsinki, Finland. Construction began in 1748, and it was the Swedes who started the work on it, although at that time, Finland was actually part of Sweden. The fortress was built by the Swedish king to protect Sweden from the potential of a Russian invasion. Unfortunately, about fifty years later, Russia did end up taking Helsinki and the fortress after months of bombardment convinced the commander to surrender. Today the fortress is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Finland, and UNESCO has added it to its list of World Heritage Sites. The fortress is made up of an intricate network of bastions, which are linked throughout the cluster of tiny islands which make up the area. In 1973, it was converted from a military stronghold to a civilian structure. Today the garrison includes a museum and an entire community. About nine hundred people live on the tiny islands all of the time, and several hundred work there. Travelers can also see the last Finnish submarine there. In addition, there is a small penal colony made up of prisoners who agree to do basic maintenance work on the islands and not use illegal drugs. To get to the fortress, tourists can take a ferry. It is one of the most popular picnic spots in the country. In fact, even locals like to picnic there. The historic buildings are still being used for everyday activities in the community that resides there, and there is always some kind of restoration project going on there. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
