 Advanced Audio Blog S2 #23 - Top 10 Finnish Writers: Väinö Linna | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:33

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Vaino Linna Vaino Linna is considered by many to be the twentieth century's most influential and important Finnish writer. After just three novels, his literary fame has spread very widely. His Under the North Star trilogy and The Unknown Solder are probably his best known works around the world. Born in Urjala, Linna had at least six siblings. His father died when he was just eight years old. His love of adventure stories began while he was still a child, and he checked many novels out of his local library. He had just six years of formal education before joining the workforce, and he ended up in the military as a result of conscription during World War II. During his time serving as a squad leader, his love for writing began to blossom and grow as he wrote various accounts of his experiences. At the end of the war, Linna got married and then began working at the textile mills near his home. He spent his time writing and reading work by famous authors like Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky. His first two books were largely unsuccessful, but his third, The Unknown Soldier, made him famous for a variety of reasons. He used his experiences during the Continuation War to craft the story, and many critics wrote against the book harshly. However, other critics recognized the book as an important part of the national Finnish identity. Linna's other major work, the trilogy Under the North Star, focuses on a farm hand and was written after Linna moved out into the country to become a farmer. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #22 - Top 10 Finnish Writers: Aleksis Kivi | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:40

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Aleksis Kivi Aleksis Kivi was the first professional writer to craft his work in the Finnish language. He was also a National Writer of Finland, and his book Seven Brothers was the first important one that was actually written in Finnish. In all, he wrote one poetry collection, twelve plays, and one book. Many people consider him to be the father of Finnish literature. Kivi was born in Palojoki, a small village where his father was a tailor. He was the youngest of four children. Many of his characters seem to be modeled after his father and mother. In 1846 he left home to attend school in Helsinki, but he struggled with his studies. He fell in love with the sister of one of his fellow students, but he was informed that he was not well enough off to take good enough care of her, so he stopped seeing the family. However, it was at their home that Kivi was exposed to a wide array of literature because they did have an extensive library, and thus his live for writing was nurtured. Around this time he also became interested in writing plays, and not long after he was admitted to the University of Helsinki, where he decided that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Johan Ludvig Runeberg, Finland's national poet. Kivi won the State Prize for his work in 1865. Toward the end of his life, Kivi began to have serious health problems, and many experts believe his mental issues were caused by schizophrenia, which he had shown signs of throughout his life, with bouts of violence and depression. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
