 Advanced Audio Blog S2 #9 - Top 10 Finnish Musicians: Leningrad Cowboys | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:42

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! Vuonna 1994 he esiintyivät jälleen Puna-armeijan kuoron kanssa MTV Music Awards -gaalassa New Yorkin Radio City Music Hallissa. ----Formal English---- Leningrad Cowboys The Finnish band Leningrad Cowboys was conceived in 1986, and it was initially meant to be a play on the fact that the Soviet Union seemed to be losing its power in their part of the world. The first video they made led to the creation of Rocky VI, a short movie. After making several films, the band came into its own, beginning to record music, perform live concerts, and make more videos. The band even went so far as to perform with the full Alexandrov ensemble in 1993 in Helsinki. This was quite the production for a band that started out as a joke conceived by a group of guys drinking in a bar. Again, in 1994, they appeared with a smaller group of members from the Alexandrov ensemble at the MTV Music Awards at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The appearance was viewed by approximately 250 million people around the world. Shortly after this performance, the band, along with the Alexandrov ensemble, were showcased on the Nokia Balalaika Show in Berlin. Presently, Leningrad Cowboys boast two Leningrad Ladies and eleven cowboys in the band. With their Finnish roots, much of their music has a progressive rock feel mixed with polka and with themes that relate to tractors, vodka, rockets and Russian folklore. It is obvious that the band has incorporated some current American influences in their lyrics. Presenting their stories in song with a humorous tone is the basis for much of their claim to fame with their fans. Following in the footsteps of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd, their music is as diverse as their fan base. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101.com! You are enjoying what was a quiet picnic lunch in a quiet park, when suddenly, your children come barreling towards you screaming! It seems like it takes ten minutes to calm them and their friends down enough so that you can concentrate on one voice at a time! Your son yells in Finnish, ""Mom, mom!!! We were at the pond and we saw something moving in the water!!"" His friend, equally excited, continues in Finnish, ""Come see, come see!! Pleeeease! What IS it?"" Laughing, both out of relief and because they are adorable, you agree to go explore the depths of the pond with them. As you reach the edge of the water, both boys are tugging at you and screaming in Finnish, ""See it? There it is!! What is that???"" You move a little closer to get a better look, almost stumbling into the water (which you are SURE they would have enjoyed tremendously), when you realize what it is they are talking about. You point to the little swimmer in the water and tell the boys in Finnish, ""That is a frog...and that one there, that is a newt."" The boys stare into the water with a newfound fascination; you can almost hear the wheels spinning in their heads, when they turn and look at you and both reply in Finnish, ""Can we keep him, can we keep him?  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #8 - Top 10 Finnish Musicians: Kingston Wall | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:49

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Kingston Wall Vuonna 1987 perustettiin helsinkiläinen psykedeelinen rock-yhtye Kingston Wall. He olivat saaneet vaikutteita monilta rock-musiikin kuuluisuuksilta, kuten Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix ja Led Zeppelin. Yhtye perusti oman levy-yhtiönsä, Trinityn, jota johti yhtyeen perustaja ja kitaristi Petri Walli. Yhtyeen debyyttialbumi, Kingston Wall I, psykedeelinen hard rock -teos, julkaistiin vuonna 1992, ja sillä on myös 21 minuuttinen jättihitti "Mushrooms." Yhtye julkaisi toisen albuminsa, Kingston Wall II, helmikuussa 1993. Albumi koostui akustisista ja folkkappaleista, eikä sillä kuultu ensialbumin hard rokkia. Kingston Wall julkaisi albumin III - Tri -Logy syksyllä vuonna 1994. ----Formal English---- Kingston Wall In 1987, Kingston Wall, a psychedelic rock band from Helsinki, Finland was formed. They were influenced by many rock notables, including Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. The band founded its own record label, Trinity, managed by founder and lead guitarist, Petri Walli. Their debut album, Kingston Wall I, with a psychedelic hard rock sound, was released in 1992, with a huge hit found in the twenty-one-minute song track "Mushrooms." In February 1993, the band released their second album, which was titled Kingston Wall II and consisted of acoustic and folk sounds as opposed to the hard rock of the first. Kingston Wall released III—Tri-Logy in the fall of 1994. With a completely different feel than the other two, it was a return to the sounds where the band started, but included some reggae and techno sounds as well. Walli traveled to India where he gathered the philosophical influence reflected in the music. Most of the lyrics had some religious and philosophical undertones, which was not what the fans expected at all. The last public performance was in Lepakko, Helsinki in December 1994, followed by a last stand at a prison in Helsinki a few days later. After this, the band decided to break up, and each one of them decided to go their own ways. Walli left and traveled to India shortly after the breakup and on June 28th, 1995, he committed suicide by jumping off the Tooloo Church tower in Helsinki. Unfortunately, he chased after his philosophical dreams and never truly found his way. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #7 - Top 10 Finnish Musicians: Amoc | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:19

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! Vaikka lyriikat ovat paikoin melko aggressiivisia, vanhemmat soittavat usein Amocin musiikkia jopa pienille lapsille iskostaakseen heihin ylpeyden tunteen omaa kieltään kohtaan. Amocin murisevasta äänestään on tullut fanien suosikki. Uusi soundi, huolimatta yleisölle esitetyistä sanoista, viehättää nuorempia sukupolvia. Uusien asioiden etsiminen on siirtymäriitti nuorille heidän siirtyessään kohti aikuisuutta. ----Formal English---- Amoc Mikkal Morottaja, known as Amoc, is a newcomer to the rap world. At twenty years of age, he sings in one of the world's rarest languages—the Sami language of the Inari region—a Finnish community—whose language is threatened with extinction. The language is only spoken by between three and four hundred people, making Amoc a very specialized performer. He has a very low voice that resonates into a growl when he sings. Not only does he sing in a rare language, but his sound is a one-of-a-kind voice that his fans appreciate. The lyrics that Amoc sings are in opposition to the sound he creates—because they are intense, presented in a rap style, and are deeply moving. Children of the region are learning the language in day care, which allows them to understand the rap music performed by Amoc—even though the language is so rare. Though the lyrics are sometimes somewhat aggressive, parents are often eager to play Amoc's music even to young children as a way to instill pride in their native tongue. His growling voice has become a favorite of fans his fans. The new sound, regardless of the words shared to the audience, is something that draws in younger generations. Always seeking for the next new thing is a rite of passage for young people as they move into adulthood. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Jean Sibelius Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius (1865 – 1957) gave us a fascinating plethora of classical pieces. His best known works, Valse triste, Finlandia, Luonnotar and Tapiola, are enjoyed worldwide. He included symphonic cycles in his pieces that have become as highly esteemed and popular as those composed by Beethoven. Within his works are found both easily accessible small pieces, as well as masterpieces of complexity and great depth. Jean Sibelius learned to read music at a young age, receiving lessons from his aunt. He played piano pieces, both solo and duet pieces, with his sister, Linda. He began his compositions for piano and violin as a child, and drew upon these early experiences to bring his work to the world as an adult. Always seeking to expand upon his knowledge, he was able to grow in the finer nuances of musical creativity, bringing a depth to his scores of composition that was initially unrecognized. Composing his works throughout five decades, beginning in the 1880s to the end of the 1920s, his pieces developed from simple works to ones were representative of both early Romanticism and the Viennese classical school. During his decades of many pieces, he was able to bring to life the expressions of instrumentality that other composers merely touched in passing. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
