Your teacher hands out a list of "things to look out for" - written entirely in Finnish! Suddenly, a classmate screams out in Finnish, "I found one!! Look, that raccoon is cracking and munching peanuts!" Everyone moans, knowing that classmate is now in the lead, but you strain your neck, struggling to see what in the world she found. Finding nothing as the group moves on quickly, you jot down as much as you can remember - you will just have to look it up when you get home. Ugh. You are startled as another classmate cries out in Finnish, "I know what the eagle eats! It's swooping down for fish!" Your fellow classmates cry out in unison, "Ahhh!!" as you again jot down the Finnish words you do not recognize. It's too bad you can't enjoy this hike through the beautiful forest.  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #15 - Top 10 Finnish Musicians: Children of Bodom | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:47

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Children of Bodom Children of Bodom on espoolainen hevimetalliyhtye. Children of Bodom on myynyt yli neljännesmiljoona levyä ainoastaan Suomessa, minkä ansiosta se on yksi kaikkien aikojen menestyksekkäimmistä suomalaisyhtyeistä. Saatuaan osakseen kiinnostusta, heidät palkannut levy-yhtiö vaati heitä valitsemaan itselleen uuden nimen, joten 1990-luvun loppupuolella yhtyeestä tuli Children of Bodom. Kaiken kaikkiaan yhtye on levyttänyt ainakin seitsemän studioalbumia ja voittanut useita palkintoja. Guitar World -lehti äänesti Laihon parhaaksi metallikitaristiksi. ----Formal English---- Children of Bodom Children of Bodom is a heavy metal band that hails from Espoo, Finland. The group got together in 1993 and is made up of Roope Latvala, who plays guitar, Alexi Laiho, the lead singer and lead guitarist, Janne Wirman on keyboard, drummer Jaska Raatikainen, and Henkka Seppala on bass guitar. The band has experimented with many different styles within the heavy metal genre, including power metal, thrash metal, black metal, and melodic death metal. Children of Bodom has sold more than a quarter million records in Finland alone, making them one of the best selling groups of all time in Finland. The band's original name was Inearthed, and Laiho and Raatikainen were the founding members. They grew up together and had always had an interest in heavy metal. Inearthed's initial records were not successful and got little, if any, attention from record labels in Finland. It wasn't until they kicked their keyboardist out of the group and Wirman joined in his place that they were able to interest record producers. When they did start to generate some interest, the record label that picked them up required them to choose a new name, so they changed the band's name to Children of Bodom in the late 1990s. In all, the band has recorded at least seven studio albums and won several awards. Laiho himself was voted in as Best Metal Guitarist in Guitar World magazine, even beating out some of the greats like Metallica's Kirk Hammett. The band also has given several sold-out performances on a number of world tours and shared the stage with big names like Megadeth and Ozzy Osbourne. In addition, the band's album Relentless Reckless Forever hit gold status in their native country of Finland the same day it came out in stores. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Aulis Sallinen Born in Salmi, Finland in 1935, Aulis Sallinen is commonly referred to as the natural successor to Jean Sebelius. A Finnish musician who started out learning how to play the violin, he composed his first pieces of music while he was still a teenager. He went to school at the Sibelius Academy, later joining the staff at the school. His many accomplishments include—Administrator of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Secretary and Member of the Board, Chairman of the Finnish Composers' Society, Member of the Board of TEOSTO (Finnish Copyright Society), and later the Chairman of the Board. He was on the Board of the Finnish National Opera for several years as well. As a Royal Music Academy member and also Honorary Doctor of the Universities of Turku and Helsinki, he gave back to the musical community throughout his career as an accomplished composer. Being appointed as the Professor of Arts for life by the Finnish Government in 1981 was one of the highest honors afforded to him and also the government's first such appointment in history. This appointment allowed Aulis Sallinen the opportunity to become a full-time composer. His listing of compositions includes no less than eight distinctive symphonies and many concert works that utilize voices. One of these is the Dies Irae, which expresses a vision of the planet destroyed by an apocalypse. Songs of Life and Death was written in 1994, which serves as an expression of Sallinen's creed of humanitarianism. Sallinen took his composing to heart, and felt the need to bring his own beliefs and convictions to the works he shared with the world. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #11 - Top 10 Finnish Musicians: Mana Mana | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:49

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Mana Mana Rockyhtye Mana Mana perustettiin Joensuussa vuonna 1986. Tällä yhtyeellä oli uusi musiikkityyli, jossa yhdistyivät goottirock, death rock, punk ja metalli - näin syntyi raskasta, grunge-väritteistä stoner musiikkia. Tämä oli yksi aikansa rankimmista bändeistä. Käyttämällä musiikissaan vääristyneitä kitararaitoja, he onnistuivat hehkuttamaan koskettavat sanoitukset tumman sävyisiksi. ----Formal English---- Mana Mana The rock band Mana Mana was founded in 1986 in Joensuu, Finland. This band had a new musical style that mixed Goth, death rock, punk, and metal, bringing out some heavy stoner music tinged with grunge. They were one of the edgiest bands of their day. By using distorted guitar tracks in their music, they were able to blaze a trail of haunting vocals with dark overtones. The lyrics were written by Jouni Mommo, the lead singer-songwriter-guitarist, and carried messages of religious symbolism, death, the apocalypse, personal revelations, insanity and, sometimes stories of love gone wrong. The music was known also for its verbiage that attacked Christianity. Their career was short due to the worsening condition of Mommo's mental state. Diagnosed as a schizophrenic, it was difficult for him to stay on task and for the band to maintain a presence on the music scene. This condition left him unable to perform live shows which limited the reach of their music. Although he wanted to perform, he simply was unable to keep up with the grueling schedule that a tour required. One of their last-ditch efforts to revive their act was to re-record many of their songs in English, but Mommo's mental health was much too poor for them to actively promote their own work. His voice on the new tracks was so weak that, in many places, he could barely be heard at all. Mommo succumbed to his condition in October of 1991 and committed suicide by taking an overdose of drugs. He was only thirty-five years old. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources!

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101.com! You learned a lot the last time you agreed to watch your niece...and this time, the joke's on her. Yes, last time, she thought she was so smart because she knew the Finnish names for so many insects in your garden. But she is only five years old, and you are pretty sure that you have her this time! You have a bug day planned - of gardening again. She loves it, and it is an excellent chance for you to show off your new Finnish insect vocabulary that you have been practicing. As you follow her out into the flower garden, she looks back at you with those big patronizingly sweet eyes and says in Finnish, "Look, what is this bug called?" Oh, she's fast: she thinks you don't know this answer. You kneel down next to her, sneer on your face, and reply sweetly in Finnish, "Honey, that is a spider, and it looks like it's protecting itself from you." Astonished, she whips her head around to face you and replies with a simple, "Oh." You point to another bug nearby and explain in Finnish, "And look here, the cicadas are climbing up the tree." She stares at you in disbelief and replies in Finnish, "I don't want to look at bugs any more, let's go work in the garden!" Looks like you beat her at her own game AND get some help with that unruly garden too! Nice job! FinnishPod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Finnish!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #10 - Top 10 Finnish Musicians: Hanoi Rocks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:53

Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101! Don't forget to stop by FinnishPod101.com for more great Finnish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Hanoi Rocks Hanoi Rocks on Suomen suurin vientituote heavy metallin maailmaan. Vuoden päätteeksi he tekivät kiertueen Yhdysvalloissa. Yhtye lähti "Hanoi Revisited" -nimiselle kiertueelle, jossa se esitti joitakin vanhempia hittejään, kuten "Malibu Beach Nightmare" "Tragedy" ja "Up Around the Bend." ----Formal English---- Hanoi Rocks Hanoi Rocks is Finland's major export to the world of heavy metal. Inspired by the 1970s glam rock, they have brought together the styles of heavy metal and glam rock more successfully than many other bands that have tried to do so. All of the band's members except the founder, Michael Monroe, had roots in the Finnish punk bands of Briand and Pell Miljoona Oy. Hanoi Rocks' debut album, Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, was Scandinavian—only and released in 1981. Once this album was released, then band traveled to London for self-promotion and recorded Oriental Beat. Hanoi Rocks became known in Britain once they signed with CBS in 1983.When they remade Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Up Around the Bend," it became their only UK chart single that year and they ended the year with a US tour. The band's founder, Monroe, left the band after a tragic accident in 1985 took the life of one of the band members. However, Monroe returned with Andy McCoy in 2001 and the band experienced a rebirth. Singing some of the older hits, "Malibu Beach Nightmare" "Tragedy" and "Up Around the Bend"—the band launched a tour known as "Hanoi Revisited." The fan's reactions to the new tour were enthusiastic, breathing new life into the band and bringing Hanoi Rocks once again to the forefront. By 2002, the duo wrote enough new songs that they were able to record a new album, keeping their existing fanbase while adding huge numbers to it. --------------------------- Learn Finnish with FinnishPod101!
