The group got together in 1993 and is made up of Roope Latvala, who plays guitar, Alexi Laiho, the lead singer and lead guitarist, Janne Wirman on keyboard, drummer Jaska Raatikainen, and Henkka Seppala on bass guitar. The band has experimented with many different styles within the heavy metal genre, including power metal, thrash metal, black metal, and melodic death metal. Children of Bodom has sold more than a quarter million records in Finland alone, making them one of the best selling groups of all time in Finland. The band's original name was Inearthed, and Laiho and Raatikainen were the founding members. They grew up together and had always had an interest in heavy metal. Inearthed's initial records were not successful and got little, if any, attention from record labels in Finland. It wasn't until they kicked their keyboardist out of the group and Wirman joined in his place that they were able to interest record producers. When they did start to generate some interest, the record label that picked them up required them to choose a new name, so they changed the band's name to Children of Bodom in the late 1990s. In all, the band has recorded at least seven studio albums and won several awards. Laiho himself was voted in as Best Metal Guitarist in Guitar World magazine, even beating out some of the greats like Metallica's Kirk Hammett. The band also has given several sold-out performances on a number of world tours and shared the stage with big names like Megadeth and Ozzy Osbourne.
