Episode 39: Franciska, Music Composer, Singer & Performer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:27

B”H Music is a big deal in our home, not because of me, but because of my husband. I have a few kids who have inherited his love of music and talent. My guest today has nurtured her musical talent from a very early age. I have composer, singer and performer Franciska on the show. Franciska grew up in Moscow of all places, in an observant Jewish family. And as you will find out, in quite an open, progressive and supportive family. Franciska creates her masterpieces by weaving eternal words of prayer into soulful guitar melodies. Raised in religious school and in musical academy, Franciska’s compositions reflect her commitment to bridging both worlds. She recently produced her fifth solo album titled “Kol Haolam” and is already working on the next one. Franciska may be young but she has a good handle on the practical aspects of her music career and keeps her feet well on the ground even as she evolves as a female composer, singer and performer. Listen to what she has to say about the creative business. How does inspiration happen for a person like Franciska? Does she really always connect to prayer? Why did Franciska decide to add launching a podcast to her workload? And what does she have to say about women – orthodox Jewish women – coming to the forefront and public life. Here’s the sweet and super talented Franciska.  Episode 38: Alexandra Zapruder, Author of Twenty Six Seconds A Personal History of the Zapruder Film | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:28

B”H Imagine you were the only one who had recorded on video a monumental event that changed the course of your country’s history? By “accident”. My guest today is Alexandra Zapruder, the granddaughter of Avraham Zapruder, the Russian Jewish immigrant living in Dallas, who recorded the Zapruder film – raw unedited footage of President John F. Kennedy’s assasination. Divine Providence? I think so. What does Alexandra think? How did Mr. Zapruder handle the moral dilemmas that ensued as a result of him owning this film? When he received money for the film, what did he did do with the money? And what happened later on in history which resulted in Alexandra’s father receiving $16 million from the federal government for the film? All this and more today on Jewish Latin Princess as I interview the Author of Twenty Six- Seconds: A Personal History of the Zapruder Film. Yes, only twenty six seconds and how they impacted not just the American public, but one Jewish man and his family. More on Alexandra. She began her career as a member of the founding staff of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. A graduate of Smith College, she served on the curatorial team for the museum’s exhibition for young visitors, Remember The Children, Daniel’s Story. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education at Harvard University in 1995. In 2002, Alexandra completed her first book, Salvaged Pages: Young Writers’ Diaries of the Holocaust, which was published by Yale University Press and won the National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category. She wrote and co-produced I’m Still Here, a documentary film for young audiences based on her book, which aired on MTV in May 2005 and was nominated for two Emmy awards. In the fall of 2015, she completed a second paperback edition and a multimedia edition of Salvaged Pages, and worked with the educational nonprofit Facing History and Ourselves to develop interdisciplinary educational materials for the book designed for middle and high school teachers. Twenty Six Seconds: A Personal Story of the Zapruder Film is Alexandra’s second book. Here’s Alexandra Zapruder.  Episode 36: Yael Trusch, Going Beyond: Living a Joyful, Richer, Jewish Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:14

B”H Have you ever wondered if there is a spiritual dynamic going on that you’re not aware of? How could the Torah’s mitzvot actually help you as a person? Are they really that important? Is your life and life around you all that you perceive with your senses? How can I really achieve more than I think possible? Well, if you’ve been listening to Jewish Latin Princess Podcast for a while, I gather you have a grasp of the answers to those questions as either they’ve been directly addressed by my guests, or you can deduce these lessons indirectly from the conversations that I’ve had with my guests. You’re listening to Jewish Latin Princess. I’m your host Yael Trusch. Welcome back! Today I have a special show for you. I’m back from Miami, where I went to speak in front of an audience of about 90 women at Chabad of Aventura Florida. This was a joint effort among several synagogues in the Aventura area in what they’ve called Project Connect – a project of connection and inspiration for Jewish women which will take place over the course of four months. I was this month’s speaker and the opening speaker for Project Connect. I was fortunate enough that Chava Mann, one of the guests and coordinators of this beautiful event was able to record me speaking and so I can share with you what I shared with the ladies in Miami. The title of my talk was Going Beyond: Living a Joyful, Richer, Jewish Life I have to tell you this event was of particular importance to me. First of all, because the lady who arranged for me to come down there, or who made the referral, and who initially conceived of the idea of Project Connect is my dear friend Hindy Rosenberg. Not only is she my friend, but I became observant with her and her family. Yes, in her home. Many many years back in my early twenties. I’ve learned so much from her and since then, she’s been by my side as a source of constant support and inspiration. Second, Miami is now home to many friends from my early youth, people I know since college, my early twenties – friends who know me from way back when. In fact, this is why speaking in front of this audience made it even more nervewrecking than usual. And I have to say in the end I loved every minute of it. I can’t tell you how special it was to get together again with so many friends as well as to meet new ones. But, listen, if I’m going to talk about something I have to live it and breathe it myself, right? Well, for me, standing up there this one time, was seriously Going Beyond! Here we go, Going Beyond: Living a Joyful, Richer, Jewish Life with me, Yael Trusch :-) You may also like | Puede que también te gusteEpisode 57: Chana Weisberg, Editor of The Jewish WomanEpisode 71: Chaya Hinda Allen, Educator & Transformation CoachEpisode 101: Margie Szerer, Creator of Live a Little HigherEpisode 35: Faigy Pollock, Expert on Marriage and Intimacy

Episode 35: Faigy Pollock, Expert on Marriage and Intimacy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:39

B”H It’s December already, wow! I’m in Miami this week re-connecting with old friends… friends who I haven’t seen in years and physically connecting with many of my newer virtual friends, who I’ve made through this platform the blog and the podcast, Jewish Latin Princess. I’m down there for a speaking engagement so I will also get to meet new women. Always so fun. Mothers, if you listen with your kids in the car or if you let your daughters listen to the show, this is a show for adults. So just giving you a heads up. Today, I bring you a woman whom I feel so blessed to have connected with. I say that about all my guests and I mean it. But today’s guest is in a field that is of primary importance to Jewish women and not a field that is navigated by many and certainly not in the way that she’s doing it. I have Faigy Pollock on the show. Faigy is a renowned kallah teacher (a teacher of Jewish brides), an EFT Practitioner and the creator of the online course on marriage and intimacy Unblock Your Way to Oneness. This is one of those interviews where I feel I can just drop the mic right there because my guest said everything that I would have said but a million times better. You think you’re talking to Faigy about intimacy yet, you end up learning about fundamental Jewish concepts – unfortunately many which through the ages and by virtue of the influences of the societies’ we’ve lived in as Jews, we’ve misconstrued. Faigy brings clarity in a very confused world. So, what is the Torah’s perspective on intimacy? What are common stumbling blocks that women face in the area of intimacy? Shouldn’t this be natural? How come it’s not easy and what do we do about that? You say, “My marriage works just fine, I’m not just so into intimacy. It’s not my thing.” Why is that a dangerous attitude? What’s at the core of these statements and why should we look to resolve this? Mothers, how do we teach our kids in a way that they are comfortable with their own sexuality? So much to learn in this episode. Here’s Faigy Pollock. Register for Faigy Pollock’s Free Webinar: Back to the Garden of Eden taking place Monday, December 11, here. Purchase the course Unblock Your Way to Oneness here.  Episode 34: Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., Author of Why Won’t You Apologize? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:42

B”H Have you ever been on the receiving end of a “non-apology”? One of those apologies that left you wondering, “what was that!?” How do you deal with the unapologetic offender? And what if you are the offender? Yikes! How good are you at apologizing? You’re listening to Jewish Latin Princess everyone. Welcome. I don’t know that I’m so good at apologizing. I recently had to apologize to my really good friend. It was all my fault. Apologizing is hard and being on the receiving end of a non- apology is also hard. You think, “Seriously!? Can’t you take responsibility for what you’ve done!?” To help us navigate this, I have the wonderful Harriet Lerner, Ph.D. on the show. Harriet is a clinical psychologist and one of our nation’s most respected voices on the psychology of women and family relationships. She is the author of numerous scholarly articles and 12 books including The New York Times bestseller, The Dance of Anger, which has sold several million copies  with over 25 foreign editions. Her latest book is Why Won’t You Apologize?: Healing Big Betrayals and Everyday Hurts. And that’s what we talk about today. And what about forgiveness? As Jews we are taught in the Torah to forgive those who’ve harmed us and who genuinely apologize. And there are also rules as to what a genuine apology is. Harriet thinks the topic of forgiveness is not black and white. There might be degrees to forgiveness and she has seen, throughout her work, that the pressure of having to forgive can be quite harmful. I do want to apologize ahead of time, because the quality of the audio today is not as usual. We had a few issues, but trust me, this is one that we all need to listen to! Here we go ladies, here’s Harriet Lerner.  Episode 32: Leigh Hershkovich, Author & Creative Director of CTeens | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:06

B”H Today I welcome my youngest guest yet, Leigh Hershkovich. When you hear her speak you will not believe that she’s only in her early twenties… the confidence, maturity and clarity … G-sh I wasn’t like that at 24 and I was considered to be quite mature. Leigh just published a novel, Shattered Illusions and is hard at work on her second novel. She is also the creative director of CTeens, the largest Jewish youth group in the world. As an offshoot of working with Teens from all over the nation on CTeens, she also started The Gesher Project. Through her writing on The Gesher Project she answers many Jewish teens’ concerns and aims to bridge the gap between Jewish and secular thought. How is Leigh, an Orthodox Jewish young woman, so comfortable in a secular world, while still holding on very strongly to Torah values and observance? How does she manage that? Is it a dangerous line? Can everyone do it? How did she resolve writing the name of G-d in a book she intended for a secular audience and what is a Jewish Orthodox woman doing writing a secular book, anyways!? These questions and more in this fun exploration with Leigh Hershkovich.  Episode 31: Wendy Sachs, Author of Fearless & Free | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:32

B”H Have you ever changed career paths, or felt stuck in the cusp of professional change? Have you been forced to change because of getting fired, or perhaps you left your career to raise your kids and after a few years, you want to go back into the workforce and are wondering, how do I go back? Well today’s guest is full of priceless advice for women in those kinds of transitions. Wendy Sachs is the author of the new book Fearless and Free: How Smart Women Pivot and Relaunch their Careers. Oprah Magazine calls the book a “title to pick up now.” Wendy is also an Emmy-award winning TV news producer. She’s worked on NBC’s Dateline, Fox and CNN. She was also a Capitol Hill Press Secretary and a PR Executive. And guess what I discovered during this interview? Wendy’s husband used to be my boss! I didn’t say it on the interview, but something she said during our conversation cued me in. I worked at AIPAC in NYC for a very short period of time before I got married and moved to Israel. And Wendy’s husband was my boss! I guess we were meant to connect. Ladies, we are living in an era of professional reinvention and women, in particular, are looking to re-invent themselves professionally more often than men, as many of us leave the workforce for a couple of years and then find ourselves trying to go back. In our conversation, we talk about how to transition without trepidation? How to traverse the roadblocks and dance with the fears we harbor about failure? We also talk about a new wave of feminism and the positive trends that we are seeing from it. Stay tuned as Wendy speaks from her own personal experiences, pivoting so much in her career she jokes she’s constantly pirouetting…sometimes out of choice, other times out of necessity. Here’s the wise and lovely Wendy Sachs.  Episode 28: Yael Trusch on Judaism & Money with Farnoosh Torabi | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:46

B”H So happy to be back behind the mic. Today is Tuesday, October 17, the 26th day of Tishrei. Tuesday!? Yes, I took a day off! More than a day. I actually took Sunday and Monday, to regroup after the High Holidays of the month of Tishrei finished. I mentioned to you last week, during my interview with Professional Organizer Rebekah Saltzman, that as Tishrei winds down, and we wave goodbye to the excitement and the exhilaration of the High Holidays, I have a need to get organized. So, I took the past two days, not so much to organize my space (although I did go through my kids closets and desks), but to do a lot of bigger picture planning, goal setting, strategize, analyze and so forth. It’s important for me to do that this time of year, because honestly there was no time for that during Elul and Tishrei. I just didn’t have the head space. My mind was elsewhere and my emotional, mental and physical capacites were elsewhere. They were in a good place, but they were elsewhere. So, one of the things that I did during these two day hiatus is have a super duper Money Date with my husband. I’ve talked about the Money Date before on the show. I spoke about it first in Episode #1 with Bari Tessler, author and creator of The Art of Money. I learned about the concept first from Bari and it’s something that I wholeheartedly believe in. I’ve also discussed it here during Episode #8 with Financial Planner and Money Coach, Debbie Sassen. So basically, since I knew we were going to need this time, before Chag started last Wednesday night, I blocked out both our calendars and I planned something for my kids to be out so we could have our super duper first of the year, Money Date. We had chocolate, we had pen and paper, we had tea, and we discussed, we planned, we set goals, we made plans, we assessed what needed to change, what’s working etc. These can be hard conversations, and many people are not used to discuss money openly with their spouses. Can I just say something? If you’re not discussing finances with your spouse – intentionally discussing finances and money – I don’t mean having an argument about a credit card payment or a late fee… I’m talking productive, healthy conversations where you discuss your values, how you want to get there, what are you doing to get there, your money tracking systems, your investments, your debt, everything… all of it… then let me just say this: What are you waiting for!? Think about how much better your relationship with your money and with your spouse, both, would be if you were open and on the same page about the big picture as well as the nitty gritty of dealing with your money. So, since this was a big part of what I did over the past two days, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you even more of what I think about Personal Finance and Money and in particular about the connection between Judaism and money by presenting you today with an appearance I had earlier this summer on Money Expert Farnoosh Torabi’s So Money Podcast. Back in the summer – seems like ages ago – I was a co-host with Farnoosh on her So Money Friday episode, Ask Farnoosh. I helped her tackle some of her readers’ questions on money and I got to share some of my insights and beliefs as a Jewish woman and from a Jewish lens. I hadn’t shared this on the show, but I did share this on social media as well as on my blog’s newsletter back in the summer when the show first aired. By the way, if you’re not subscribed to my news letter, what are you waiting for? I don’t bombard you with too many emails, but I do keep you posted on things that you want to look out ...

Episode 27: Rebekah Saltzman, Professional Organizer & Founder of Balagan Be Gone | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:27

B”H I hope every one is enjoying the holiday of Sukkot! Later this week we culminate the festivities with the Holiday of Simchat Torah. In a way we’re entering the last stretch of the month of Tishrei and towards this time I start wanting to get my life back into a routine. For me that always translates into organizing, decluttering, paying attention to my spaces,  my home etc. Yup, I always go through this process right after Tishrei. So it’s not a coincidence that to indulge my organizing urges, and to teach all of us how to be more organized, I have Rebekah Saltzman on the show. Rebekah is a Professional Organizer and Founder of Balagan Be Gone! Isn’t that a great name? Rebekah holds a degree in fashion design from Parsons School of Design, and for many years worked as a graphic designer.  Rebekah’s passion for the environment and helping people improve their lives, drove her to change careers paths and create Balagan Be Gone. As you will see from today’s interview Rebekah has a straightforward approach to managing “stuff” and a no-nonsense ability to get to the heart of what is important. She really is a master at helping people get control of their lives through organization, even those who are most untrained in this area. What is Rebekah’s take on my urge to organize right after Tishrei? And why freeing up physical space this time of year might actually be a wonderful thing? A rather spiritual perspective which I think you will appreciate as much as I did. Is organization an inborn trait or a learned skill? Rebekah tells us today. Rebekah is a proponent of a Zero-Waste Life. What is that? What does that look like, especially if you have an observant Jewish family? We talk about time management – always a hot issue in most women’s lives and how to use automation to save us time especially with those tasks that we do enjoy. In fact, Rebekah made a handy dandy video for us on one of her favorite automation tools. Lots of practical tips in this interview, and to my delight, many which I had never heard before. And if you’re a skeptic and you think, “thank you very much but my ‘organized chaos’ serves me just fine,” Rebekah might be able to help you re-think that and re-shape your attitude. Here’s Rebekah Saltzman. * Here’s the link to sign up for Rebekah’s workshop on Skill Share, as well as on hundred’s of other workshops. * To watch Rebekah’s video on how to automate those emails that you find sending over and over again and just need a few tweaks, click here. * Here’s the auto text expander that Rebekah mentioned. * To get $20 off of online coaching with Rebekah, valid for two coaching sessions, email her at rebekah@balaganbegone. She’s relatable, very relatable, and she will share with us what she has learned about fear throughout her journey. We don’t go into all 100 fears she faced during our interview but you can find those in her website, michellepoler.com and on her you tube channel, but we do talk about the things she has learned, a fear she has faced now in real life and how she faced it, the business that came out of what was initially a school project, her childhood, her family and so much more.
