TED Podcast Extras – Salute to Veterans | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:22

This is a Salute to Veterans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 and the 1st World War or “the war to end all wars”. Armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany. One year following President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th the Armistice Day commemoration and this being the 95th year since with the end to "The Great War" as it was known officially, ending with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. It became a Federal Holiday in 1938. Following World War II and the Korean War it was known as Veterans Day in 1954 and in 1968 a bill passed to set it as the 4th Monday in October. Later changed in 1975 to what we now celebrate on that day or the closest Friday or Monday as a celebration to ALL Veterans of ALL Wars. Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate Veterans of World Wars I and II on or near November 11th. Canada - Remembrance Day, Britain - Remembrance Sunday. Throughout Europe they observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11. As this is a Technology Podcast so I thought I would list some of the advancements coming out of war and it's Veterans. WAR TECH: - Velcro for paratroopers. - Kevlar bullet proof material. - Night Vision Goggles at the end of World War II. - GPS global position system. - Gortex as a lightweight jacket. - Jet Engines. - Spy Satellites. - Missiles. - Radar. - X-Ray machines. - NASA from the Cold War. - Software. - Encryption. - Super Glue. - Atomic Bombs whether good or bad. - Communications equipment. - Medicines. - Synthetic Fuels. - Sonar. These are just a few of the many things coming out of war and used or produced by Veterans. Being a Veteran myself of the Vietnam Era as part of the United States Coast Guard I do observe on this 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month a two minute silence during my podcast for ALL those Veterans past and present. With Honor to the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. I Salute You!  TED-2014-11-05 – Wicket | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:44

Your WICKET (a window or opening, often closed as in door or forming a place of communication) like electronic data can be much like and opening for you to go through to store small things without opening everything to be stolen or damaged. A Wicket is just an opening in something larger. This could be your external hard drive, CD or online Backup to protect your data. This could be anything digital you want to store: photos, documents, files or passwords etc... You only need this small opening to store a little at a time as things change after doing the full move-in to your storage vault. Kind of like barricading your data. If you are over the age of 50 you are 80% more likely to do backups than someone younger. About 30% of everyone never does anything. Backing up your data can be simple if you follow a few simple steps. Use the Rule-of-Three at minimum for the most secure solution. This means 3 copies, original, a backup of the original, and a backup of the backup. One copy at home(locally) for quick restores and recovery. The second and third should be in separate locations off-site, safe from (lightning, flood, fire or theft etc...). Original copy can be on DVD's or CD's or a second hard drive internal or portable external HD, NAS(network attached storage) or memory stick. You can store second copy on these off-site maybe safe deposit box, stored with family or friends you trust. The third should be another location at different location, maybe other family member or online backup I.E. Cloud Storage. If you don't have the Internet speed (usually more than 1 Mega bits per second) to use Off-Site data protection or cloud solutions consider others. Some off-site venders even allow you to send them a hard drive they can then download and return. There are various software solutions for this or use the built-in solutions in Windows or Apple operating systems. Remember to also consider your mobile devices like cell phone, phablet, tablet or laptop. Some of these also come with their own solutions, sometimes you can backup to cloud or a desktop or laptop then that backup can be stored when it has it's backup. What should you backup, the choice is yours but anything you can't afford to loose or recreate. Files, Documents. Financial stuff, personal or Business stuff, Scanned copies, Creations, Memorabilia, Recordings(voice, music or movies) you don't have originals of. Look at this for ideas of what to backup and why: With Windows 7 or 8 you can go to: Start - Control Panel - Backup and Recovery. Not the best choice but better than nothing. Create a restore disk on CD/DVD or thumb drive and then a system image of entire hard drive to location you have chosen. For regular backups: choose location and setup schedule when this should happen. I would do this at least monthly so you don't loose too much. For recovery use the restore media you chose to boot off of, then same Backup and Recovery system. Monthly backups should only be your data folders or drive and image backup should be done every 6 months to year. DO NOT BACKUP to a PARTITION on same DRIVE! remember if this drive fails so will your backup. Apple has their iCloud with backup and recovery for both desktop, laptop and mobile. With a software solutions you can do a main image of required operating system files needed for installed software and settings you don't want to loose. Then setup regular monthly backups of all your data. Or add additional incremental backups daily,

TAFR or Temperature Actuated Flow Reducer valves or devices to protect you and others from scalding. These are essential Elder Safety items to keep yourself and the ones you love from accidental scalding in the shower, bath or other faucets around your home or apartment. Some of the features and benefits of these devices is that they conform to international safety standards. You can specify and install with confidence! They are simple and have effective scald prevention. Quick installation that fits most showers, taps and baths. Have strong construction with a sleek design that is made from solid brass with a chrome finish. All national and regional code-making bodies have amended their plumbing code language to require anti-scald technology and a maximum water temperature of 120 F in all newly constructed residential units. In all age groups, tap water scald injuries have been cited as the second most common cause of serious burn injuries. Accidental or non accidental (as in cases of child abuse), scald injuries often cover a large area of the body, leading to high rates of illness and death. Certain segments of the population are more susceptible to scald injuries, particularly children under 5 years of age, adults over 65 years of age and persons who are physically or mentally challenged. PREVENTION OF TAP WATER SCALD INJURIES The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that although most scald burns occur in the kitchen, the most severe scald burns are caused by water flowing into the tub or shower. These devices are perfect for remodeling applications with ease of installation providing you cost effective scald protection. These valves reduce flow to 0.95 L/min. (0.25 GPM gallons per minute) or less automatically in response to outlet temperatures greater than a preset actuation temperature not to exceed 49 C (120 F) so as to limit exposure to high temperature water discharge from an individual fixture fitting. They can handle a maximum input temperature of (185 F) and a maximum supply pressure of 145 PSI pound per square inch. This is just one provider of these type of devices but if you feel that you are in need of this just do a search on: Temperature-activated flow reducer. These relatively low tech devices cost $40 or less each. These are mostly screw-on faucet devices that stops the flow of water at preset temperature 49 C (120 F). It is best to have your water heater set for 120 F but they can go above this while heating. Setting the temperature below this can lead to bacterial or fungal problems.  TED-2014-10-15 – Safety | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:59

Safety can come in various ways and Elder Safety technology is changing by the day with new and improved ways to improve your health, security and keep yourself from being isolated. I will discuss some of the main forms that technology can keep you safe and secure. Some of these areas I have already discussed in previous podcasts of The Elder Divide or TED Podcast Extras. Technology is in your life as an Elder sometimes without knowing it. You might get up in the morning by an enhanced alarm, turn on the CFL or LED green power lights, use a temperature controlled shower, brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush with timer, check you computer, cell phone or tablet for messages, be reminded of your morning meds by a pill minder, turn your wireless monitored security alarm to day mode, cook breakfast on your electronic stove, microwave or toaster, read by your electronic lamp, watch tv or listen to the radio, check-in with your caregiver, friend or family by some communication device or just generally use some gadget during the day. All that and you say your afraid or do not understand technology. It has just crept up you you without you thinking about it. Allowing you the ability to live independently. Gone are the days of being shuffled off to the assisted living center or nursing home. Allows for you NOT to be a burden to family, but a pleasure. Just get on the Internet. It’s Easy! You will enjoy Elder life much better. - It keeps you connected with family, friends and elder communities. - It can help keep you healthy and fit. - It helps you live independently in your own home or apartment longer. - Keeps you more up to date with technology and news. - Maybe best choice for online shopping and delivery without leaving home. - There are some excellent web based OS solutions for Elder ease of use. Hearing Devices: Everyone experiences hearing loss as you age. If needed the newest devices can help with mild to moderate loss. No more wearing a bulky device as an excuse for you to go without. Miniaturization and wireless connection like bluetooth make them tiny, transparent or nearly invisible. Some can even be implanted. Things like P.A.E.S.A. or others. Health Devices: Whether it be a device prescribed by your doctor or something you have connected by you cell phone or other internet connected device. These can be as simple as a wrist band that monitors your health or full blown things like a health chair that monitors all you vitals for around $595 per month for monitoring. They check blood pressure, heart rate, glucose level, EKG, lung sounds, motion reflex response time, temperature or blood oxygen saturation or other checks all without going to the doctors office. Simple things like the Turtle to mind you medications. Cell Phones, Tablets & Phablets: Used for communication by text, email, video or testing and training. Useful to stay in touch, monitor your health, keep your memory sharp, learn something new, relaxing with a movie or book, finding something or get some work done.  TED-2014-10-08 – Safes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:26

Safes for Elder Safety also called a strongbox or coffer. It is a secure lockable box used for securing valuable objects against theft or damage from fire. They can have mechanical or electronic locks (I.E. key, paddle lock, combination, dial or digital keypad). You can also have data storage devices for your important computer files. Even the hide a key rocks to protect your things. Things to look for in a safe: - UL(Underwriters Laboratories) certifications Construction and Performance ratings: Prefixes: TL attack by tools TR attack by torch TX attack by explosives Suffixes: 15, 30, 60 minute survival Rates: B Steel doors less than 1” & walls less than 1/2” thick. C Steel doors at least 1” & walls at least 1/2” thick. E Steel doors less than 1 1/2” & walls less than 1” thick. ER Safe or chest labeled TL 15. F Safe or chest labeled TL 30, TR 30. G Safe or chest labeled TX 60, TR 60 or TRTL 30. - Fire ratings: ½ hour 1550F/843C 1 hour 1700F/927C 2 hour 1850F/1010C 3 hour 1920F/1052C 4 hour 2000F/1093C - Electronic w/mechanical key backup. - Your insurance coverage (I.E. homeowners or renters) requirements. Important Note - (IRS does not accept a fire as a reason for not having records, or filing tax returns). - Type (I.E. Deposit or Drop, Fire-Rated, Office, Data or Media, in-Floor, High Security) for your needs. - Use a reputable dealer. At a minimum you should look for a safe with UL ratings and has a digital electronic lock with a backup key you can place somewhere separate from safe or with someone trustworthy. Steel or composite material does not matter if UL Rating is good for fire and theft. As high a rating as you can afford and feel safe with. Remember to check with your insurance coverage and maybe send them an inventory and pictures of items for future reference or claims. Digital Electronic safes take longer for someone to crack and you can more easily remember the code than find a key or see the dial on a combination locking mechanism. The code can also easily be changed by yourself without costly intervention by a locksmith as in mechanical locks. Once you purchase one consider where you can have it placed or mounted. Best to have some way of securing it in a wall, floor or behind another locked door. Most smaller ones include securing screws or bolts. Never have a larger one on wheels if at all possible. Also consider what you are storing and how valuable it is. Too late after the fact. Or at the least consider a Safe Deposit Box at your local bank if you don’t want a safe or have a place for one. If you use tax software or have digital pictures and documents consider a data safe like ioSafe or LaCie for computer backups. If you are regular listener to my podcast I would like to Please hear from you, get to know you and Welcome you to my HOME @ TheElderDivide@ElderDivide.info Help Support the Show! if you feel this podcast is of value I have given you various ways to support the podcast or use the TED Listener Support or Support the Show! with product links on my blog sites.  TED Podcast Extras – Android Podcast Apps | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8:32

Podcast Apps for Android. The top ones you can chose for listening to podcasts like this. I will point out the 3 top choices, features, pros and cons. Whether you have a cell phone, phablet or tablet these might be your best choice for Android podcast listening. They all have features like setting up play-lists, search for podcasts and downloading. Getting them on your device is simple. Just do a search on Google Play Store under Apps. Select download and install. You might want to first select their Free version to check it out and see what best works for you before purchasing the paid versions. You will have to deal with ads on the Free version but best way to see if it is for you. Pocket Casts by Shiftyjelly seems to be a top choice and holds top ranking on Google Play Store reviews with 4.7 out of 5. Is also #1 on Phandroid and AndroidCentral. $3.99 for full version, NO Free version for testing. Has refund option. Ported over from Apple iOS. Great UI (user interface). Finding podcasts is extremely easy. With a Pocket Cast account you can sync across devices. Even works with Google Chromecast. Shiftyjelly is a South Australia company. New Pocket Casts beta app verion coming soon. BeyondPod by BeyondPod Team is another top choice and holds top ranking on Google Play Store reviews with 4.6. Comes in at #2 on lifehacker and AndroidCentral. $6.99 for full version. Has phone and tablet versions. Plain UI. Huge library of podcasts even obscure ones. DoggCatcher is one of the other top choices and holds top ranking on Google Play Store reviews with 4.5. It’s #1 on lifehacker and Android Authority. $2.99 for full version. Available from Google Play Store and Amazon appstore. Easy to use but somewhat busy UI. Works with audio, video and RSS feeds. Automatic downloads and remembers playback position so you can return to where you left off. Active user community. This is my personal choice at present but trying Pocket Casts to see if I like it better. May be changing to this if things work out. I have previously tried BeyondPod but found it to be buggy and froze more than once on my tablet B&N Nook HD+ using their tablet version. All these reviews and rankings are from current mid 2014. Lots of others to chose from but these are the ones on top.
