TED-2014-10-15 – Safety

The Elder Divide show

Summary: Safety can come in various ways and Elder Safety technology is changing by the day with new and improved ways to improve your health, security and keep yourself from being isolated. I will discuss some of the main forms that technology can keep you safe and secure. Some of these areas I have already discussed in previous podcasts of The Elder Divide or TED Podcast Extras. Technology is in your life as an Elder sometimes without knowing it. You might get up in the morning by an enhanced alarm, turn on the CFL or LED green power lights, use a temperature controlled shower, brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush with timer, check you computer, cell phone or tablet for messages, be reminded of your morning meds by a pill minder, turn your wireless monitored security alarm to day mode, cook breakfast on your electronic stove, microwave or toaster, read by your electronic lamp, watch tv or listen to the radio, check-in with your caregiver, friend or family by some communication device or just generally use some gadget during the day. All that and you say your afraid or do not understand technology. It has just crept up you you without you thinking about it. Allowing you the ability to live independently. Gone are the days of being shuffled off to the assisted living center or nursing home. Allows for you NOT to be a burden to family, but a pleasure. Just get on the Internet. It’s Easy! You will enjoy Elder life much better. - It keeps you connected with family, friends and elder communities. - It can help keep you healthy and fit. - It helps you live independently in your own home or apartment longer. - Keeps you more up to date with technology and news. - Maybe best choice for online shopping and delivery without leaving home. - There are some excellent web based OS solutions for Elder ease of use. Hearing Devices: Everyone experiences hearing loss as you age. If needed the newest devices can help with mild to moderate loss. No more wearing a bulky device as an excuse for you to go without. Miniaturization and wireless connection like bluetooth make them tiny, transparent or nearly invisible. Some can even be implanted. Things like P.A.E.S.A. or others. Health Devices: Whether it be a device prescribed by your doctor or something you have connected by you cell phone or other internet connected device. These can be as simple as a wrist band that monitors your health or full blown things like a health chair that monitors all you vitals for around $595 per month for monitoring. They check blood pressure, heart rate, glucose level, EKG, lung sounds, motion reflex response time, temperature or blood oxygen saturation or other checks all without going to the doctors office. Cell Phones, Tablets & Phablets: Used for communication by text, email, video or testing and training.
