 Biblical Manliness 026: “Bromance” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:56

Episode #026 Recorded Sunday, June 30, 2013 "Bromance" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: A bromance is a close non-sexual relationship between two (or more) men, a form of affectional or homosocial intimacy. Dave Carnie, editor of the skateboarding magazine Big Brother, coined the term in 1990's to refer to the relationships that developed between guys who skated together all the time. The most notable biblical example is of David and Jonathan in the book of 1 Samuel. Brett McKay at The Art of Manliness blog highlights three admirable qualtities of male friendship: true loyalty, non-judgmental, and straightforward. Four Blessings of Bromance  1. Correction: Prov. 27:5   Open rebuke is better than secret love.  6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. 2. Compassion: Prov. 17:17   A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. 3. Counsel: Prov. 27:9   Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.  10 Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off. 4. Countenance: Prov. 27:17   Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.  Three Bad Bromances 1. The Megaphone: Prov. 16:27   An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.  28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. 2. The Broken Record: Prov. 17:9   He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. 3. The Tea Kettle: Prov. 22:24   Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:  25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. Three Keys To Building a Bromance 1. Be Friendly: Prov. 18:24   A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. 2. Be Pure: Prov. 22:11   He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. 3. Be Rich (Toward God): Prov. 14:20   The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends. //Prov. 19:4   Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour. //Prov. 19:6   Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.  7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.  Biblical Manliness 025: “Manly Marks: Temperance” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:17

Episode #025 Recorded Monday, June 24, 2013 "Manly Marks: Temperance" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The nineth Manly Mark is Temperance. The Greek Word for "temperance" comes from a word that literally means "in power" or "in control" Temperance is "holding in hand the passions and desires." Essentially it is the opposite of the adultery, fornication, and laciviousness. (Gal. 5:19) "When a man fails in life he usually says, ” I am as God made me.” When he succeeds he proudly proclaims himself a ” self-made man.” Man is placed into this world not as a finality,— but as a possibility. Man’s greatest enemy is,—himself. Man in his weakness is the creature of circumstances; man in his strength is the creator of circumstances. Whether he be victim or victor depends largely on himself...At each moment of man’s life he is either a King or a slave." (Self control, its Kingship and Majesty by William George Jordan, 1905) Temperance Requires Self-Motivation (1 Cor. 9:19-24) Temperance Requires Self-Control (1 Cor. 9:25-26) Temperance Requires Self-Discipline (1 Cor. 9:27) Your Feedback Submit your feedback or suggest future topics via email (manliness@thelightnetwork.tv) or voicemail: 903-26-LIGHT (903-265-4448) If you enjoyed the show, please rate it on iTunes and write a brief review.  Biblical Manliness 024: “Manly Marks: Meekness” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:56

Episode #024 Recorded Wednesday, June 12, 2013 "Manly Marks: Meekness" HOST: Chris Clevenger   Show Notes: By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The eighth Manly Mark is Meekness. Meekness is humility and gentleness combined, especially in the face of adversity. Sir Thomas Browne explained: "Meekness takes injuries like pills, not chewing, but swallowing them down." This indicates that meekness allows a person to overlook or forgive perceived insults or offenses." Meekness is practicing strength under control.  Meekness is possessing a purpose bigger than yourself.  Meekness is preferring forgiveness over revenge.  Your Feedback Submit your feedback or suggest future topics via email (manliness@thelightnetwork.tv) or voicemail: 903-26-LIGHT (903-265-4448) If you enjoyed the show, please rate it on iTunes and write a brief review.  Biblical Manliness 023: “Manly Marks: Faith” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:49

Episode #023 Recorded Monday, June 10, 2013 "Manly Marks: Faith" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The seventh manly mark is "faith." Faith is an acceptance of facts (Heb. 10:32-34), trusting in those facts (Heb. 10:35), and acting in accordance with those facts (Heb. 10:36-39). Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1) Faith is essential to our relationship with God (Heb. 11:6) and our relationships with others.  Biblical Manliness 022: “Manly Marks: Goodness” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:04

Episode #022 Recorded Monday, June 3, 2013 "Manly Marks: Goodness" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The fifth manly mark is "goodness." Goodness is "moral uprightness." God is the ultimate standard of Morality. (Luke 18:19; Psa. 25:8; Nah. 1:7; Matt. 19:17) True goodness possesses a zeal for truth which rebukes, corrects, and chastizes. We must measure our standard of goodness and morality against God's standard, the Bible. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. - Edmund Burke Your Feedback Submit your feedback or suggest future topics via email (manliness@thelightnetwork.tv) or voicemail: 903-26-LIGHT (903-265-4448) If you enjoyed the show, please rate it on iTunes and write a brief review.  Biblical Manliness 021: “Manly Marks: Kindness” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:48

Episode #021 Recorded Monday, May 27, 2013 "Manly Marks: Kindness" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The fourth Manly Mark is "gentleness" or "kindness." This gentleness is understood in three words: Wholesome, Servicable, and Kind. Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. - Mark Twain Ron Gutman: The Hidden Power of Smiling Wholesome - What I Am Before Others Sometimes the word used in Galatains 5:22 translated "gentleness" is also translated "good." Therefore, it can mean "moral excellence." Serviceable - What I Do To Aid Others Jesus used a word similar to what Paul used when He said, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:30) Like feathers on a bird, the yoke of Christ is servicable. It enables the Christian to accomplish great things. It isn't a burden. It is a blessing. Kind - What I Do Toward Others This is probably the most common understanding of "gentleness." To be a gentleman one must be kind.  Biblical Manliness 019: “Manly Marks: Peace” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:08

Episode #019 Recorded Monday, May 13, 2013 "Manly Marks: Peace" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Watch the video of this episode:   Show Notes: By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The third "Manly Mark" revealed in the Fruits of the Spirit is peace. The world defines peace as the absence of conflict. To the Christian, supreme peace can be enjoyed even in the midst of trials. (Philippians 4:6-7) One of the words translated peace in the New Testament carries with it the idea of being joined. Consequently, peace is found in the individual when he is joined in mind. Peace is found between God and man when man aligns his will with God's will. Peace is found in the church when the body possesses one mind. Peace Is Found Through Pursuit Romans 14:19 Ephesians 4:3 2 Timothy 2:22 Hebrews 12:14 1 Peter 3:11 Peace Is Found Through Perception Romans 8:6 Peace Is Found Through Preaching Acts 10:34-43 Romans 10:15; cf.  Biblical Manliness 018: “Manly Marks: Joy” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:16

Episode #018 Recorded Monday, May 6, 2013 "Manly Marks: Joy" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes:  By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The second "Manly Mark" given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in this list is joy. Joy is "a cheerfulness or calm delight" that is not touched by the cares of life. There is no greater picture of Christian joy than the writings of the aposlte Paul in the book of Philippians. While imprisoned by the evil ruler Nero, Paul wrote the greatest treatise on joy in the New Testament. Eighteen times in fourteen verses the apostle mentions joy or rejoicing. The key verse of Philippians is 4:4 - "Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice." Joyful Men are Christians Philippians 3:1, 3; 4:4, 10 Joyful Men Have the Mind of Christ Philippians 2:5; 1:6, 11; 2:13 Joyful Men are Confident Paul uses the word translated "confidence" six times in this book on Joy. Our confidence comes from Christ.     Episode #017 Recorded Monday, April 22, 2013 "Manly Marks: Love" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Watch the video of this episode:   Show Notes: By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul provides nine qualities that we refer to as "the Fruits of the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-23) These characteristics are the outgrowth of the Word of God, the seed of the Kingdom (Luke 8:11), when it is planted in our hearts. The first of these "Manly Marks" is "love." This type of love involves considering others, their attributes, and their character, out of an intelligent estimation of their worth. This type of love isn't bound to emotions; rather, it transcends them. Love seeks the best interest of another and puts others before itself. Here's a picture of what love is all about: "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." (1 John 4:10; cf. Romans 5:8) A description of love is found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Real Men Love Christ (1 Corinthians 16:22) Real Men Love the Church (Ephesians 1:5; Colossians 1:4; Hebrews 6:10) Real Men Love their Neighbors (Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31; James 2:8) Real Men Love their Wives ((Ephesians 5:25, 28, 33; Colossians 3:19 Your Feedback Submit your feedback or suggest future topics via email (manliness@thelightnetwork.tv) or voicemail: 903-26-LIGHT (903-265-4448) If you enjoyed the show, please rate it on iTunes and write a brief review.
