Biblical Manliness 026: “Bromance”

Biblical Manliness with Chris Clevenger show

Summary:     Episode #026 Recorded Sunday, June 30, 2013 "Bromance" HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: A bromance is a close non-sexual relationship between two (or more) men, a form of affectional or homosocial intimacy. Dave Carnie, editor of the skateboarding magazine Big Brother, coined the term in 1990's to refer to the relationships that developed between guys who skated together all the time. The most notable biblical example is of David and Jonathan in the book of 1 Samuel. Brett McKay at The Art of Manliness blog highlights three admirable qualtities of male friendship: true loyalty, non-judgmental, and straightforward. Four Blessings of Bromance  1. Correction: Prov. 27:5   Open rebuke is better than secret love.  6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. 2. Compassion: Prov. 17:17   A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. 3. Counsel: Prov. 27:9   Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.  10 Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off. 4. Countenance: Prov. 27:17   Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.  Three Bad Bromances 1. The Megaphone: Prov. 16:27   An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.  28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. 2. The Broken Record: Prov. 17:9   He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. 3. The Tea Kettle: Prov. 22:24   Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:  25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. Three Keys To Building a Bromance 1. Be Friendly: Prov. 18:24   A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. 2. Be Pure: Prov. 22:11   He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. 3. Be Rich (Toward God): Prov. 14:20   The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends. //Prov. 19:4   Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour. //Prov. 19:6   Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.  7 All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.
