Bad Government, Good Food and Fall TV-Palooza (Commando CultureCast #3) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:13

Our guest for this week unexpectedly fell through, so you get a full dose of Christian, Amy and Jordan this time. We start out by taking it to our esteemed legislators in D.C. for their inability to get along with others as well as we expect by four-year-old daughter to behave. And after a fairly substantive excavation of all things political and socio-economic, we move on to Jordan's favorite topic: FOOD. Jordan is fairly obsessed with extolling the virtues of MSG lately, so when the cover story on this month's Wried Magazine was all about "umami," and what makes certain foods taste so amazing, he basically blissed out. Want to hear Jordan get ecstatic about a Taco Bell Doritos Locos taco? This is the show for you, my friend. Finally, we break down the new fall Television season, highlighting the shows we have on our "must watch list." Think of it as our gift to you; we suffer through hours of couch time so you don't have to. Ain't that freakin' sweet of us?

Amanda Bast on Appreciating the Present, the Fear of Terrorism vs. Spiders, and Two Books You Should Read Immediately | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:13

This episode has been in the hopper for a bit, so don't be mad at us for talking about 9/11 and flooding in Colorado. We start things off strong with a discussion of which gender and sexual orientation is best to get compliments from, an appearance from the famous Mattias Piatt, who provides some advice on breaking arms. Our guest this week is Amanda Bast, an extremely funny writer who's article "26, Unmarried, and Childless" blew up Converge Magazine, garnering over a million views in four days. Amanda discusses the article, which questions our culture's approach to constant concern over what's next, what it's like to have a blog post go extremely viral, and what it's like to be a young teacher in Ontario, Canada. In the Echo Chamber, we reflect on 9/11, and specifically the overreaction and fear the attacks engender in Americans 13 years later. Then I ranted about how Americans should be brave. In a change of pace, Christian takes this week's Fear o' the Week, and he's scared of spider season. Especially the succulent ones. Then, the gang recommends some books, particularly Nadia Bolz-Weber's bestselling Pastrix, and 1491, a book about the Americas before Columbus landed that will blow your mind and change everything you know about the people who lived here before white folks showed up and accidentally killed nearly all of them. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  John Caputo on the journey form Radical Hermeneutics to the Weakness of God [Barrel Aged] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:59

With over 5 years of interviews under out belt - having gone from just friends listening to 50k - realizing that there are a ton of people who can't get the best interviews from the past - let us introduce you to Homebrewed Christianity Barrel Aged podcast. I will be re-releasing the best interviews from the early days, super-short new intros, and hopefully doctored audio. This is the second episode of John Caputo's first visit to the podcast.  It was an EPIC conversation you are sure to enjoy.  It's like meeting JC again for the first time! Make sure you check out the amazing bloggers engaging Caputo's newest book The Insistence of God on a Homebrewed Book Tour. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Kirk Have I Loved But Tripp? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:32

Daniel Kirk is on the podcast.  The most sensational Theo-Blogger, Homebrewing, Fuller Professor of New Testament, and fellow Wake Forest Demon Deacon [he also went to Duke and UNC Chapel Hill but I forgive him for that... Go Deacs!] is on the podcast with a bunch of topics he's looking to settle with me.  We had an amazing local for this conversation... only Orange County's greatest brewery... the Bruery.  Not only is the Bruery in my Top 10 list of Craft Breweries but Deacon Brian White is one of their master of the taps. Kirk's previous visits to the podcast include this LIVE one from Mark Scandrette's house party in San Fran with Philip Clayton and a sweet discussion of Easter recorded during Holy Week. Go check out his blog & follow him on twitter. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Snake Handlers, NPR Geek-Outs and White Power (CultureCast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:01

We're honored and more than a little geeked out of our skin this week to have John Burnett, Religion Correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR in the biz, yo) as our guest. John was in Portland doing a story on our Beer and Hymns and about singer/songwriter Josh Garrels, so I roped him into sitting down with me for a chat. John talks about his wild year thus far as NPR's religion reporter, including his encounters with a hallucinogenic tea ceremony (yes please), a snake handling worship service (no thanks) and a worship band made up of twenty trombonists. Check out one of his stories from the "Ecstatic Voices" series about a Muslim Hollywood star who also does calls to prayer in his mosque. And no, in case you're thinking it, I didn't make any "boning for Jesus" jokes during the interview. Not even once. Aren't you proud of me? We took a dive in the echo chamber into white colonialism and privilege in its many stripes around the U.S. Amy also promptly alienates all the magicians, Illinois residents and mullet-sporting listeners out there, and Jess the Intern and Jordan make a little competition out of who can get the most facebook followers this week. They're linked up, baby. You decide!

Reza Aslan, New York Times #1 BestSelling Author of Jesus: The Life And Times Of Jesus Of Nazareth recorded a live Podcast with Tripp and Bo.  TNT bonus track: Young People & the Church | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:33

In this bonus track Bo chats with Micky Jones about the now infamous Rachel Held Evans post on CNN Religion about young people leaving the church. Then Bo and Tripp chat about what the topic means as youth pastors at Mainline churches. These two conversation were originally recorded earlier this summer as part of a bigger conversation that never came together ... but instead of just getting rid of the audio, we wanted to use your responses to frame a future episode of the TNT.  Tony Kriz, Killer Bees and Women in Prison | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:15

This week, Christian sits down with Tony Kriz (AKA, Tony the Beat Poet from Blue Like Jazz) to talk about his new book, Neighbors and Wise Men. They also break down a brief history of the Acts 29 network, and Tony Explains how and when Mark Driscoll's Mars Hill and Imago Dei went in very different directions. Tony also talks about what it's like to live in intentional community, doing ministry without a church and why some of his most spiritual encounters have been over a pint in a pub...which is exactly where we were when we did this interview. Amy breaks down a double-dose of her fear of the week, one of which involves swarms of angry stinging beasts. No, not Church deacons. Even worse! We also go through some fall recommendations, including a more in-depth chat about the new Netflix series, Orange is the New Black, the latest Neko Case record and what we think is going to happen in the final episodes of Breaking Bad (don't go, Walt. We love you...*sniff*)

“We Are All One”: Human Rights Campaign Panel Discussion From the Wild Goose Festival | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:10

One of the highlights of Wild Goose Festival 2013 was a panel discussion organized by the Human Rights Campaign and hosted by Dr. Sharon Groves, the director of HRC's Religion and Faith Program. In Groves words, "2013 will go down in the history books as one of the most pivotal years for religious leaders working on justice issues. People of faith in unprecedented numbers were instrumental in bringing about the tremendous gains the LGBTQ community has enjoyed, culminating in the Supreme Court decision to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). People of faith also saw the gut-wrenching losses to sacred Civil Rights legislation, most particularly in the Supreme Court’s other decision to dismantle the Voting Rights Act, for which many have given their lives. The effects of these two decisions rest heavily on our collective conscience and forces us to recommit to Civil Rights activist Bayard Rustin’s core organizing tenet that 'we are all one.'" Sub-titled "Southern Faith Leaders Re-framing the Work for Freedom and Justice," the panel included Caitlin Breedlove, co-director of Southerners On New Ground (SONG); Bishop Tonyia M. Rawls, founding pastor of Unity Fellowship Church in Charlotte, NC; and Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, Senior Pastor of the Clinton Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Hickory, NC. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.
