 Non-Asian Asians, Obama’s Bobbles and the NSA | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:01

This week, as the rest of the country swelters, the CultureCast crew complain about the cool, overcast weather in Portland. Hey, everybody has to gripe about something, right? Our guest for the episode is Bruce Reyes-Chow, returning to the show for another go-round. This time he discusses his new book, "But I Don't See You As Asian" which explores the complexities of race and privilege in America in Bruce's trademark humorous first-person narrative style. It's a good thing he told us he was Asian, because otherwise we never could have known...yaknow, on account of us not paying attention to anything but ourselves. We also put Obama on the hot seat for a bit, breaking down some of his second-term disappointments thus far. But it was all really just a tee-up for Christian's mad rant about the NSA's recently revealed power overreaches. Man, he gets worked up! Finally, we talk about Portland's less-than-stellar religious history. Turns out everything the early missionaries touched more or less died. So...really sorry about that. Stupid smallpox!

Frank Schaeffer, Arrested Development, and the Red Wedding | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:08

This week we welcome the great Frank Schaeffer to discuss modern art, the fight against human trafficking, and why we aren't outraged about tech companies Frank compares to "modern day slave ships". It's an illuminating discussion, and it goes long because everything Frank was saying was awesome. Later, Amy is afraid of drowning, so none of us should ever go underwater again. In the Echo Chamber, we're discussing Game of Thrones and the 9th episode, which rocked everyone's world. (If you haven't watched Game of Thrones, skip the show from about the 47:50 mark to the 54:00 minute mark). Then it's on to the resurrected Arrested Development, and the gang is decidedly split so far.

Tevyn East and The Carnival de Resistance | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:03

Last week Callid spent some time talking to Tevyn East, who is a Christian, performance artist, and dancer. She is the artistic vision behind Leaps and Bounds and Blood on the Cedars, dramatic shows that she wrote and starred in, touring the country with her unique integration of Ched Meyers-inspired Sabbath Economics, modern dance, poetry, and song. Currently she is at work in the development stage of The Carnival de Resistance, a communal, "traveling arts carnival, village demonstration project, and school for cultural transformation." With plans to launch in the fall of 2013, The Carnival is currently slated to unfold in two locations - Harrisonburg VA - Sept. 13th - Sept. 22nd and Charlottesville VA - Sept 26th - Oct. 6th. Callid talked to Tevyn about the biblical foundations of her performance work, her vision for the Carnival, and why she uses the arts to talk about theology. More info (and a chance to donate to the Carnival fund-raising campaign) is here and in the video below.   We want to thank those who donated to the show and sponsored the episodes this month.  Convergence Christianity, Dental Phobias and Gay Cakes (CultureCast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:14

Okay, who spiked the CultureCast punch with Aderall? These guys are all over the map today...hey look, shiny! This week we dig around in the gray matter of Eric Elnes, pastor of the online faith community Darkwood Brew, author of the Phoenix Affirmations (and many other books), and most recently, prophet and advocate for what he calls "Convergence Christianity." If'n you ain't yet in the know about what exactly that is, read the twelve-point manifesto here. Then we dive into Amy's latest Fear of the Week: Dentists. Not the most original fear, but certainly understandable after he dentist took a file to her face as an experiment. We touch base on the whole anti-gay cake baking drama in the Pacific Northwest and we have a little debate about who among us is the most humble (hint: we pretty much all lose that one). *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal. Rob Bell is back on the podcast but this time he is hijacking it! With a packed brewery full of local LA Homebrewed Deacons Rob decided to hijack the podcast and turn things around.  This time Tripp had to answer the questions.  What ensued was quite the conversation.  I am sure no one expected what happened.  So get yourself ready for some podcast excitement and don't forget to come back next week for some more ingredients to brew your own #zesty faith.  Patheos CEO Leo Brunnick, Dental Drama & Playing Doctor (CultureCast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

This week we settle in with Patheos co-founder and CEO, Leo Brunnick to talk about how one goes about taking an idea sketched on a cocktail napkin to being one of the biggest interfaith websites in the world. Sadly, we got no leads on magic words or fairy dust; just lots of hard work and good fortune. Dammit! In the echo chamber we talk about which countries are looked upon most and least favorably worldwide. The highest esteem country will probably surprise you (and no, it's not the US). We also dissect the irrational drama behing the Portland water fluoridation debate, and we make some recommendations of the music you should have in your summer rotation. We finish the show with Amy giving Christian a shot in the ass - literally. She's pretty dramatic about the whole thing, but we're pretty sure she mostly enjoyed getting to get even with Christian for all the shit he gives her, both on and off the air. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Stephanie Drury, Overly Religious Bakers, Portland is Evil, and Cheerleaders | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

After a two week recording hiatus, the gang is back together, and Amy starts everything off with a harrowing story of survival and triumph of the human spirit at a female pastor's retreat. Our guest this week is the very funny Stephanie Drury who blogs at Stuff Christian Culture Likes and also runs @FakeDriscoll on Twitter. We had a number of things to discuss, from Christian men who want women to dress more modestly to why Mark Driscoll is legitimately dangerous to the documentary Holy Rollers, which features Stephanie's husband and a Christian blackjack crew. We're pleased to introduce a new feature: Amy's Fear o' the Week. (Spoiler alert: it's bees.) In the Echo Chamber, we run through a host of topics: the similarities between narrative in pornography and Christian art; Portland's role as the least Christian city in the United States; more wedding cake makers who refuse to provide cakes for gay couples; and whether or not high school cheerleaders should be able to plaster Bible verses all over those really elaborate banners cheerleaders always make. The last point turns into a discussion of free speech and the separation of church and state. In the final act, I talk a bit about my new blog, The Burnsider, and Amy has a story about seeing Stevie Wonder on her plane.

Unfolded Episode 4 – In Awe of Creation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

This week’s episode is truly awe inspiring. In this show we feature a collection of poems that deal with the subject of creation; being inspired by it, in awe of it and participating in it. The poems were written and narrated by the amazingly talented Pittsburgh, PA musician, Rachel Smith. Check out some of her music at blackorchidstringtrio.com As always, we appreciate your feedback.  CultureCast: Game Church, Jason Collins and Driscoll | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Our guest this week is Drew Dixon, the editor-in-chief of GameChurch.com. Drew talks to us about video games, and their value within faith and culture. Later, in the Echo Chamber, the gang discusses Jason Collins, the first NBA player to come out of the closet. Then we talk about Mark Driscoll, and his latest controversy, which involved talking about how blowjobs are biblical. Did he say anything about men performing oral sex on women? He did not. Christian is annoyed by that, and Amy thinks Mark Driscoll is physically attractive, which was news to us. We also touch on Bitcoin, some hippy protestors outside Amy's church office, and this leads me to ask how Amy deals with annoying people. There are some vague Recommendations, as well, though you've probably heard them. Listen with the player below, or subscribe on iTunes for free HERE.

Revelation of Darkness LIVE Event: Taylor’s F-it Theology, Rollins reaches behind the curtain | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

This is the first half of the LIVE event featuring Rob Bell that was held at the Monkish Brewing Company. Barry Taylor takes us on a whirlwind tour - and even though you can't see the slides - the message comes through loud and clear! Warning: explicit language.  Then Tripp sits down to talk it through with him. Peter Rollins does his magic and Bo gets to ask him some practical questions.
