Jacques Ellul, Christian Anarchy, and Joel McKerrow | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:03

Up front, Christian and Jordan discuss their Christmases, and whether Hitler painted houses or paintings. The interview was actually recorded last summer, when the two sat down in Christian’s kitchen to talk with Australian spoken word artist Joel McKerrow. They discuss the land down under, Wild Goose West, and Joel does some really cool spoken word pieces. In the Echo Chamber, Christian explains the fiscal cliff to Jordan, and then they talk about French theologian Jacques Ellul, Christian anarchy, and Time’s Person of the Year. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  A Guide to Being a Communist Calvinist with Roland Boer #zesty | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:56:52

There is only one person equipped to provide a guide for being a Communist and a Calvinist and that man – Roland Boer – is on the podcast.  Roland, a preacher’s kid, had an intellectual conversion in school when he moved from liberation theologians to reading Marx for himself.  Since then he has established himself as the world’s premier scholar of Marxist criticism of religion and scripture. I ran into Roland during the American Academy of Religion this November and managed to find a quiet corner of the convention center to record this conversation [find out what Roland & I did here].  It was a real treat to get to meet Roland in person and has ear for an afternoon.  If only I had been recording when we discussed his time as a youth minister… next year! Roland Boer, Jeffrey Robbins, Clayton Crockett * Check our Roland’s Legendary Blog [Stalin's Moustache] NOW! * Go get yourself a Roland Boer book!  In the intro to the podcast I mention checking out Roland’s Rescuing the Bible. * Join Bo this Lent & read through Tony Kriz’s Neighbors and Wise Men. * Check out Roland’s faculty page at the University of Newcastle in Australia. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  W. Paul Young on the Creative Process, Theology, and Being One of the Highest-Selling Authors in History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:26

This week’s episode was recorded in the youth group room at First Christian Church in downtown Portland. To start things off, Jordan talks about being the Marv Marinovich of comedy by relentlessly pushing his daughter to be funnier while Christian embraces the black magic that is naturopathic medicine. This week’s guest is W. Paul Young, author of the wildly popular novel The Shack, which has sold 10 million copies to date. Paul talks about the creative process, about trusting God rather than trying to please, and the development of his latest book, Crossroads. Basically, it’s just an interesting conversation with a fascinating person who’s also incredibly gracious and humble. In the Echo Chamber, it’s all about gun control. Christian and Jordan discuss how our spiritual beliefs and cultural biases impact our stance on gun control and violence. Since Christian’s a pacifist and Jordan’s a veteran who grew up around firearms, they bring some varied perspectives to the conversation. We hope you enjoyed your Christmas, and have a happy New Year!

Jason Boyett on THE END OF THE WORLD | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:18:54

In a brief mini-cast, Christian and Jordan welcome Jason Boyett to the show. The talk primarily revolves around the impending end of the world. Since he authored Pocket Guide to 2012 and Pocket Guide to the Apocalypse, Jason is clearly an expert on the subject. They discuss the odds of the world ending tomorrow (12.21.2012), the ways in which we could die (Yellowstone National Park blowing up, asteroids, etc.), and why people are so obsessed with the end of the world in the first place.

Occupy the Church! Rita Nakashima Brock, Joerg Rieger, & Christophe RInger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:53:28

What happens when professional theology nerds at their professional guild meeting decide to talk to the Church about the Occupy movement? Since that is the very question every theo-nerd was asking….BAM! Merry Christmas! Here is the first part from the live Homebrewed Christianity session at the American Academy of Religion.  In this session you hear from Rita Nakashima Brock, Joerg Rieger, & Christophe Ringer.  These three professional theologians have their own personal experience with the Occupy movement from groups in Tennessee, Texas, & California.  Not only do they each drop a chunk of wisdom but they answer a number of the questions you all sent to me. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Justin Lee on Rescuing the Gospel from the Gay-vs.-Christians Debate | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:16

After a delightful anecdote about Christian’s daughter and a painful listen to the worst version of “O Holy Night” ever recorded, Christian and Jordan welcome Justin Lee, founder of the Gay Christian Network and author of Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate, to the show. Justin was raised in a conservatives evangelical culture, and around the time he reached puberty realized he was gay. He has since found a call from God in his ministry of reconciliation between those in the LGBT community and those in the church currently wrestling with issues of sexual identity. The guys ask him about clobber passages, the potential pitfalls of trying to bridge such an explosive cultural divide, and whether the Apostle Paul might’ve been gay. In the Christian Echo Chamber, Pat Robertson says something entirely reasonable about science! Then Bill O’Reilly said something about Christianity being a philosophy, which he was either wrong or not wrong about, depending on your perspective. Either way, the War on Christmas is stupid, and Jordan gets kind of upset about it at the end.   *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  The Historical St. Nick with Adam English | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:16

St. Nick w/ a Sword! If you are wondering about the history behind Jesus’ birth story go find Dom Crossan (great episode!) or another historical Jesus scholar.  BUT if you wanted to know about the real hero of the Christmas season you need a historical St. Nick scholar.  Well you are welcome! Get ready to hear about the man behind the belly.  Yes he likes giving… but also social & structural justice… and has a pretty high Christology. We are once again joined by Adam English, professor of theology and philosophy at Campbell University, to discuss his new book, The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus. It was a fun and informative conversation that gives you the perfect nuggets of knowledge to drop at your office Christmas party.   ***This episode is sponsored by Slave Free Earth – they are asking the deacons to join them in ending human trafficking and specifically sex slavery.  Rev. Amy Piatt on Sexuality, Beer and Ministry | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:31

Although Jordan Green and Christian Piatt have had lots of authors on the show so far, they haven’t had many ordained ministers doing actual work in a church. They’ve also been called to the carpet for having too many dudes on the air. And then it occurred to them: Christian’s wife, Amy Piatt, was right there in the next room! After some coaxing and promises by Christian to attend various holiday parties, she agreed to come on the show and talk about what it’s like being female ordained clergy in the 21st century. They also talked about the Piatt’s recent “Beer and Hymns” event at their downtown Portland church, why some guys can’t seem to get over seeing boobs behind a pulpit and whether Kimbo Slice got a fair shake in his bid as an MMA fighter. Okay, to be fair, this last part was really just Jordan and Christian derailing the conversation. The sophomoric duo also cover some music and TV recommendations, discuss the recent viral story about Larry DePrimo a policeman buying a guy named Jeffrey Hillman on the street some shoes and what the right response is to someone we think is in need. And then someone made a fart joke or something and they both forgot what they were talking about. Typical. ***This episode is sponsored by Slave Free Earth – they are asking the deacons to join them in ending human trafficking and specifically sex slavery.  How to make the Devil theologically sexy with Adam Kotsko | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:53:31

Adam Kotsko, Assistant Professor of Shimer College & the philosophical blogging master-mind behind ‘An und für sich,’ is our guest this week.  I previously interviewed Adam but the audio turned out pretty rough so Deacon Stephen Keating went back to the source for a second try & it was delicious. The discussion focused on Adam’s most excellent book The Politics of Redemption: The Social Logic of Salvation where, unlike Tony Jones, he wants to bring the Devil back to the center of our atonement conversations.  Prepare yourself for a devilishly good time & get smart and follow Adam on twitter. ***This episode is sponsored by Slave Free Earth – they are asking the deacons to join them in ending human trafficking and specifically sex slavery.  Tripp Fuller on Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:45

In this episode, Jordan Green and Christian Piatt share the virtual mic with Homebrewed Christianity Godfathers Tripp Fuller and Bo Sanders to discuss the AMC zombie show, Walking Dead, how Zombie Theology can be applied to scripture and what every good Christian needs in order to survive a zombie apocalypse. Green and Piatt go uber-hipster on some local Oregon brews, and Piatt geeks out on his favorite tech gadgets of 2012. They bounce the U.S.’ role in Syria and the college football restructure madness around in the echo chamber and, for the first time, welcome Christian’s wife, Amy, into the Homebrewed lair for pithy sideline commentary and a little bit of bongo magic. Who says these guys aren’t consummate professionals? No, seriously, somebody should say it, because they don’t listen when we say it. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Peter Rollins on God, Gin and Zombies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:45

This week, Jordan Green and Christian Piatt mosey up to the bar for a chat with pyro-theologian Peter Rollins, author of “Insurrection” and the forthcoming “The Idolatry of God” (Jan, 2013). They talk about the Death Drive, why billionaires aren’t actually selfish and how we’ve made an idol out of the beliefs we often claim as central to our Christian faith. We also talk about the proper way to make a Hendricks gin and tonic, whether IPAs are better in the states or across the pond, and what theological themes we can glean from the AMC zombie show, “The Walking Dead.” Jordan and Christian also break down the mostest awesomest inventions of the year, Elmo, David Petraeus and internet privacy, and a handful of recommendations you simply have to check out if you claim to have an actual life that has any meaning. Not really, but it’s pretty good stuff. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Fresh Jack Caputo for a Nerdy Thanksgiving! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:55

This past I week I was in Chicago for the American Academy of Religion. When I arrived in Chicago I discovered that DePaul University’s Philosophy department was hosting Jack Caputo! It was like an early Christmas present & now it’s your Thanksgiving surprise.  Many thanks to Michael Naas for letting me join the fun. Hope you all enjoy the freshest Caputo excitement! Jack’s last visit to the podcast was his introduction to Radical Theology!  His first,  second, and third visit rocked the podcast. Then we shared his main-stage fun from Soularize and the 3D event with Philip Clayton, Jay Bakker, and Peter Rollins.  Even more exciting are these class lectures Caputo is sharing here at HBC.  These lectures are free theological cat nip for theology nerds. Enjoy. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal. We got bandwidth to buy & audiological goodness to dispense.  Donald Miller on Writing, Fear, Faith and the Future | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:25

Christian Piatt and Jordan Green sat down around a mic with author Donald Miller, best known for his faith memoir, Blue Like Jazz. They talk about why Miller voted twice for Barack Obama, even though he’s a Paul Ryan fan (wha?!), how the movie studio Pixar saved Apple and why narrative is the lifeblood of people, communities and businesses alike. Don reveals much about his upcoming book, talks about what he’s doing with his Storyline Conference and spars with Jordan and Christian on what it takes to be a truly great writer. Hang onto your MP3 players, kids, ’cause this is one conversation you won’t want to miss. And because of the great dialogue, we’ve extended the interview to take up most of the show. We’ll have more from the Echo Chamber, Christian Cliches and other segments next time, but for now, enjoy this face-to-face writer smackdown with three dudes elbow-deep in the business. It’s kinda like “Inside the Actors’ Studio,” but with nerds.
