TNT: The Resurrection, Divine Knowledge, & Other Todd-Picks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:37

This is a very special edition of the Theology Nerd Throwdown.  Not only does the BoDaddy try to provoke me (theologically speaking) toward a rowdy defense of the resurrection but we have a very special guest - Todd Littleton.  Todd is the greatest Southern Baptist Minister on planet earth.  He is also the technical brains behind our High Gravity online classes, pastor to the HBC Deacon of the Year, & now officially an Elder. Hence forth all ye Homebrewed Christianity Deacons shall know Todd Littleton as Elder of the Okie. Over the course of the episode we discuss the nature of the resurrection, the divine attributes, the function of doubt in faith, atheism as a spiritual practice, the church and its obligations to the poor, the World Vision debacle, and a number of other goodies. Here's the blog post where Bo provoked the first segment.  It was a blast to have a group of local Deacons in the room hanging out after we finished the High Gravity session on Mary Daly.  If you are ever visiting LA tweet us up & maybe we will have a recording you can join in on. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  What Christianity is Not & a Theology of the Cross w/ Douglas John Hall | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:43

Douglas John Hall is Canada's greatest living theologian & emeritus professor of theology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He is a theologian of the cross, a contextual theologian, and a wonderfully articulate one as well.  In this conversation we discuss his latest two books What Christianity is Not & Waiting for the Gospel, his love of music, personal interactions with Moltmann, Billy Graham, Tillich & company, and a number of intense theological topics.  It was a complete joy to chat with him.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did... and of course share the brew!  Heartbleed, Holy Chickens, and Hancocks (CultureCast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:55

Amy shows off her yodeling and confesses that she and Christian *might* have a problem with Candy Crush. In the echo chamber, the Andy talks about the Heartbleed internet security flaw and why maybe you should hold off on changing all your passwords. The crew talks about how Chick-Fil-A may be getting back into their good graces with their new focus on healthier food options. After that, Amy wonders about whether or not Jesus had a wife? New evidence supports the authenticity of a papyrus fragment that seems to support that he did. Even if it is authentic, does it make a difference? Christian thinks that the contrasting responses are more about our sexual hang-ups than anything else. Colin Kaepernick’s recent bad behavior gets some airtime and Rolling Stone’s graphic’s department may need to take remedial US History. Andy gets in on Amy’s fear of the week as he freaks out about the coming ant uprising in Oregon. Lots of things to recommend from Mike Judge’s new show on HBO, “Silicon Valley,” to FX’s “Archer” and … Colbert? This post is sponsored in part by Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, OK.  Lobster Hands, World Vision and Raising Babies (CultureCast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:46

Jess the Intern and Philip the Page show off their costuming skills for Zoe’s play, Christian talks about his new job with Crowd Scribed, and Amy can’t remember her Fear of the Week… again. I guess the world just isn’t nearly as scary as it used to be? In the echo chamber, the crew discusses the World Vision debacle, wrestling with whether or not their reversal makes sense in light of their mission, and if the whole concept of “aid” needs to be rethought. Next, they tackle the Fort Hood shooting and Philip the Page offers his perspective as a veteran while Jess the Intern waxes eloquently on the “military industrial complex.”  Finally, they talk about two new books from very different perspectives about how women can best set themselves up for having babies later in life. Jess almost has an aneurysm. This post is sponsored in part by Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, OK. Phillips exists to cultivate vital communities, vital conversations, and the public good.  Youth Ministers, the Niebuhr Revival, @pastormark & Other Goodies #PYM14 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:29

Jonnie, Tony Jones & I were lucky to bring the Homebrewed Christianity heat LIVE at the Progressive Youth Ministry conference.  This episode includes some of the excitement that was had.  It kicks off with a tasty interview with DePaul professor of religion, theo-blogger & Moltmaniac Scott Paeth.  We discuss his new book (which is awesome and easy to read) The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians, the Hauerwasian Mafia, and the future of progressive Christian ethics in America.  Then Tony Jones and I had a serious battle of au contraire mon fraire... Tony Jones did not win.  That was great BUT... little did we anticipate Jonnie would secretly orchestrate his victory with a statement that blew our mind. If that wasn't enough we had Trey Pearson of Everyday Sunday & Carter DJ-ing the show & post-pod dance party...oh yeah that happened... Our wonderful host 4th Presbyterian & John Vest were amazing & even arranged to have some delicious Revolution Brewing & Goose Island beer at the celebration. Chalice, the TNT publishing partner, also did some awesome give-away fun at the event. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Why Write a Liberal Theology? w/ Douglas Ottati | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:09

Why write a liberal theology?  That's a good question & we got an interview size answer!  Buckle your theological safety belt because this episode is going to get seriously awesome.  If you remember Dr. Ottati's last visit to the podcast then you are already excited!  Professor Ottati is the Craig Family Distinguished Professor in Reformed Theology and Justice Ministry at Davidson College in North Carolina.  He is one of the best communicators I know.  Not only is he a top-notch nerd but he has a strong love for the church and bringing theological goodness into local congregations. PS. Ottati rocks the name game with a level of skill that rivals Jurgen Moltmann's fun with Tony Jones and I. On top of the most awesome first volume of Theology for Liberal Protestants you can check out Theology for Liberal Presbyterians and Other Endangered Species, Reforming Protestantism: Christian Commitment in Today’s World, and Hopeful Realism: Recovering the Poetry of Theology. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Sneaky Televangelists, Fred Phelps is Dead, and a Glut of God Flicks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:29

This week we are honored to have NPR Religion Correspondent John Burnett return to the show to talk about his nvestigative series on televangelists and fiscal transparency: Can a Television Network be a Church? The IRS Says Yes. You may remember that John first appeared on the Culture Cast last year when he was in Portland covering Beer and Hymns. Andy talks about his detox diet, having to pee all the time, and calls for a ban on the phrase “whole ‘nother” (because “‘nother” is NOT a word!). Christian, who isn’t detoxing, reveals his surprising organ failure contingency plan. Amy steers this week’s Echo Chamber discussion on the death of Fred Phelps, which leads into a discussion on statements of faith and whether or not they are freeing or constricting. She then delves into a real stomach-turning fear of the week after she finds out that her favorite gum contains boiled bones and animal skin. And God, there are a lot of God movies out. The crew struggles with which of them (if any) to recommend. Jess the Intern reviews “God Is Not Dead” and Christian hopes beyond hope that Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah” will deliver.  Malaysia, Marriage and Measles! (CultureCast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:15

We continue our time-tested tradition on the Homebrewed Christianity CultureCast about taking completely unrelated topics, digging into them, making a smart-ass joke and then pretty much leaving a bunch of loose ends when we're all done. And you listen to this because... We talk this week about the Malaysian airliner that's been missing for some time now, and our obsession with recovering the wreckage and victims. It leads to an interesting look at how we deal with death in our culture, and why so many of us never learn to grieve. Jess the Intern takes over Amy's fear of the week as she confessed her terror about the idea of actually marrying, Philip the Page. Which, yaknow, makes him feel all kinds of awesome. We wind it up with Philip's first-ever on-air rant about vaccinations. I know, sounds like a weird thing for a guy with no kids to get in a twist about, but he's on a mission, that guy. Patrick and Christian taste WhipperSnapper Oregon Spirit Whiskey and discuss the process used in making it. They also discuss the merits of using an Ice Sphere Mold instead of traditional ice. “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” ? Mark Twain Be sure to like our facebook page  and join our twitter feed to keep up with the chatter off the air, and to submit your own questions about beer, brewing or spirits (the drinkable kind) for us to take on during the show!

Phyllis Tickle LIVE 3D & Au Contraire Mon Frère II | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:10

Phyllis Tickle was at Fuller Seminary for a talk about her new book "The Age of the Spirit". She then came over to (a)Spire to have a pint with us. This was no ordinary pint! Tripp brewed 'The Grain Emergence: a 500 year rummage ale'.   We do some Q & R with Phyllis - then Barry Taylor chats with her. Then we played "Au Contraire Mon Frère II" with Tripp and Tony.  Round 3 will be in Chicago at the Progressive Youth Ministry Conference later this month. This is a rough-cut edit. That means that a couple of swear words made it through the filter ... and that some things removed for public conception.  We want to thank Andy and his team plus all those who helped to make this event happen and to those who came out and made this an amazing night. PS Claire also brought some amazing home brew.  That was tasty. We also want to wish Phyllis a Happy 80th Birthday!! *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.
