Cool Weed, Cold Wars, Smokin’ Apps and Hot Messes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:57

Sometimes we just talk so damn much, there's no time for an interview. This happens to be one of those weeks... With Sanjay Gupta re-upping his stance on Medical Marijuana, Vladimir Putin slignin' his weight around in Ukraine, Millennials smashin cultural trends, Lent in full swing, tons of apps and shows to recommend and a big, juicy slab of horse meat on the table, what's not to love about this show? Plus, Amy and Jess share an epic fear of the week this time that Jordan calls into serious question. Amy is shouted down for adding cheesy sound effects like some radio-hour amateur, Philip drops some weed wisdom and Christian spoils House of Cards for everyone who hasn't watched it yet. Pretty much just your average CultureCast. This post is sponsored by Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, OK. Phillips exists to cultivate vital communities, vital conversations, and the public good. If this sounds like the place for you, give them a call at 918-610-8303 or visit them online at ptstulsa.edu.

TNT: Tripp’s Timed Process Responses, Drugs & God as ‘He’ | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:18

Ahmed (@woodylovesJesus) & Tim 'the Elder of Hops' (@timothytalks) visit the throw-down! This TNT was recorded after the Hobbit LIVE video-cast with Gregory Walter. Suffice to say, it was a rowdy affair. We start with a 3 minute challenge for Tripp to answer each of Process Theology's big concerns. The 3 of us then judge him after each round. The 2nd question relates to drugs and tragedy. The 3rd question is about the gender of God. You might want to skip to the 8th min when the action really starts. In minute 38 we change things up.  Need to look up any theo-words? You may want to look into this little pocket dictionary of theological terms - the kindle is $6 *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Education’s Broken, Walmart Needs Welfare, but Somehow Everything is Awesome: Culture Cast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:16

This week Amy looks to Entertainment Weekly’s “Bulls Eye” for culture and then outs Philip’s deprived, candy-less upbringing. Andy Campbell sits in for Jordan and talks about pasta makers, bottling homebrew, and growing up with diabetic brothers.  In the Echo Chamber, Christian offers his thoughts on reforming high school education and whether or not industry-specific training might lead to a renaissance of the career. Philip reflects on graduating from a vocational-technical school and Jess shares her experience as a first-generation college student. Amy expounds on the surprising relationship between Walmart and welfare, while Andy brings up the impact of the proposed minimum wage hike. Christian and Andy give us a quick update on Christian’s beer as they bottle it. Finally, Amy shares an unforgettable(?) Fear of the Week and Philip flip-flops on his feelings about the movie Her in this week’s recommendation. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal. In part 2 we hear from friend of the podcast Jeremy Fackenthal and then get Caputo's response to all the papers - including those from part 1. If Jeremy Fackenthal sounds familiar, you may have heard him from the popular breakout session at EVTC 2012 session "Marx & Whitehead" or his previous AAR session on Occupy The Church. We look forward to your feedback on these fantastic papers - which will be available in E-book format next month. The Theology Nerd Throwdown is excited to welcome Chalice Press. They are the offical publishing sponsor with lots of great books and resources for theology nerds, preachers, and church planters.  The Problem of Evil & Suffering w/ Robert Mesle [Barrel Aged] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:41

This Barrel Aged podcast was originally released in 2008 as episodes 8 & 9.  The quality of the conversation was so good we had to put it back out.  Who doesn't enjoy a good conversation about evil, suffering, Buddha, Bible & a little Whitehead?  Clearly someone who hasn't listened to this episode yet.  Bob Mesle is a professor of Religion and Philosophy at Graceland University. Dr. C. Robert Mesle’s 136-page introduction to process-relational philosophy is a must-read for anyone new to process or who wants to be able to clearly articulate Afred North Whitehead‘s philosophy to others without a lot of technical language or headaches.  You can check out his podcast about the text HERE.  You should also check out his introduction to Process Theology which again is the best for a newbie. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Jen Butler is Homegrown Christianity episode 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:28

The HomeGrown Christianity series is pleased to welcome Jen Butler to discuss creation-care and Christian perspectives. We talk about the unique opportunity of our times and the challenges that are posed when addressing eco-theology in a seminary setting. The Reverend Jennifer L. Butler is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, where she currently serves in a call at First Congregational UCC in Corvallis, Oregon. In addition to pastoring, she is an adjunct instructor at George Fox Seminary, where she teaches ecology, theology, and ethics in the Earthkeeping concentration. Her first book (co-authored with two of her teaching colleagues), On Earth as in Heaven, will be published in 2014 by Baker Academic Press. As you will hear in the interview, she wrote her master's thesis on ecofeminism and evangelicalism. You will enjoy her insights and passion about the variety of issues that impact the subject. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Corporate Shills, Sex Sells and Someone’s Week Sucks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:10

The episode starts off with Christian recounting what could well be his worst week ever since entering into adulthood. It's actually so crappy, it would be funny...that is, if Christian wasn't the one writing this. Laugh it up, fun boys. We check in on the progress of the homebrew that Andy Campbell and Christian started - next step, bottling! Also, The CultureClub debates such timely issues as commercialism in media, sex in the arts and whether or not we dissed our Young Earth Creationist brethren and sistren in the last episode. Oh, and just in case none of that tickles your fancy, check out the logical acrobatics necessary for Christian to connect the dots between the Lego Movie and the Dalai Lama. Once again, the intellectual giants that occupy a seat at the CultureCast table demonstrate their mind-boggling sophistication. Shout-Out to this week's sponsor: Week of Compassion takes on aid for a new disaster somewhere in the world on average of every other day of the year. Plus, about 95 cents of every dollar donated goes to direct aid.

Taking Caputo into the [insert practical places discussed] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:31

The Caputo Session at AAR from the past year was amazing! This is part 1 of that night. Part 2 will follow in just a couple of days. We look forward to your feedback on these fantastic papers - which will be available in E-book format next month. The Theology Nerd Throwdown is excited to welcome Chalice Press.  V-Day Bourbon Corner (CultureCast Mini-Sode) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:05

What goes better with Valentine's Day than a nice glass of bourbon? Forget the chocolates and frilly cards; join us for a glass of your favorite whiskey and catch up bourbon value buys, bourbon tasting and a bit of bourbon culture and history. Christian Piatt and Patrick DonVito break it down this week over a couple of rocks glasses full of Elijah Craig 12-year-old bourbon. They talk about the reason it is so tasty, while also being affordable, while also revealing some of the folklore behind this popular (relatively) small-batch distillate. We're interested in what you think of this segment. Keep it as part of the CultureCast? Spin it off into it's own show (working title: "Angel's Share")? Trash it and never talk about whiskey ever again? Speak up, and we'll listen. Can't say we're the best at following instruction, but I promise we'll at least listen!

The Hobbit, Smaug, & Weak Power w/ Gregory Walter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:44:25

Who doesn’t love J.R.R. Tolkien, the mythology of Middle Earth, and getting to see Smaug (the most EPIC of all dragons) on the big screen?  If Led Zeppelin can sing about it and nerds can roll 12 sided dice about it, then it must be pretty awesome.  On Thursday February 6th we hosted a live video streaming podcast with Gregory Walter to nerd out about Tolkien’s world.  It was an amazing conversation in which you get convo about the book, movie, and all the Middle Earth mythology. Our guest is Dr. Gregory Walter, a professor of religion and Pro Grade Hobbiter.  He is a professor at St. Olaf College and was recently on the podcast to discuss his new book Being Promised: Theology, Gift, and Practice.  At the end of the podcast we realized our mutual love for the Hobbit and this podcast idea was born! You can check out the video HERE. Gregory's list of the essential Tolkien texts can be found HERE. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  Theological Legend Michael Welker on Constructive Christology | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:12

Who is Jesus Christ for us today?  Is there a way to even attempt to answer the question with intellectual credibility?  One of Germany's greatest theologians, Michael Welker, is on the podcast discussing his new book God the Revealed: Christology.  In the book and on the podcast we discuss the quest for the historical, theological engagement with the natural sciences, the cultural shifts in the church, atonement theories, our shared love of Whitehead, and a bunch of other nerdy bits of goodness. It was a real honor to get to talk with Dr. Welker.  I have read so many of his texts over the years & have long admired his work.  The creativity of mind and clarity in his writing are always impressive but in this conversation it was the depth of his faith and love of the church that struck me.  I hope you all enjoy the conversation as much as I did and share it far and wide so I can talk him into coming back on the podcast. *** If you enjoy all the Homebrewed Christianity Podcasts then consider sending us a donation via paypal.  God is Disappointed in You! (CultureCast) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:22

This week, we welcome Mark Russell and Shannon Wheeler, author and illustrator, respectively, of the book, "God is Disappointed in You." If you've ever found it tedious to plow through all 66 books of the Bible, this humorously irreverent digest is a great starting point. It's worth it, if for nothing other than the circumcision cartoon. We're also introducing a new segment called "Bourbon Corner," where Christian Piatt and Patrick Don Vito break down all things bourbon: this week's featured bourbon is the deliciously affordably Old Forester. In the Echo Chamber, Amy mourns the thrashing of her beloved Denver Broncos, and we all reflect on the tragic loss of Philip Seymour Hoffman. We break down the "Macklemore Grammy Weddings," and we serve up some tasty recommendations - and by tasty, I mean a great book and groovy film. Don't really eat them. Oh. and thanks to Andy Campbell for sitting in while Jordan was away this week. And thanks for bringing your fantastic beard with you, you sexy, hirsute little devil, you. Mad props to our sponsors, Slow Church Conference and Week of Compassion. Slow Church Conference has extended their $99 Early Bird rate till Feb 6th, and they added a student rate as well. Week of Compassion takes on aid for a new disaster somewhere in the world on average of every other day of the year. Plus, about 95 cents of every dollar donated goes to direct aid.
