 Advanced Audio Blog S2 #25 - Top 10 Norwegian Writers: Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:36

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! Bjørnson selv vant Nobelprisen i litteratur i 1903. ----Formal English---- Bjornstjerne Bjornson Many literary experts consider Bjornstjerne Bjornson to be one of the Four Greats, or the four greatest Norwegian writers of all time. The other three writers are Jonas Lie, Henrik Ibsen, and Alexander Kielland. Bjornson is especially known for writing the lyrics to the national anthem of Norway, "Yes, We Love this Country." Born on a farm in 1832, Bjornson started writing poetry when he was eleven years old, then matriculated to University of Oslo to study journalism and drama criticism. His first novel was published in 1857, and it was the first of many books he would write that focused on the lives of peasants. In fact, Bjornson is known for his so-called peasant tales almost as much as he is for writing the words to Norway’s national anthem. In addition to novels, he also wrote a number of plays, using them as social commentary on politics and other issues that were important during his time. One of the subjects he wrote extensively about was the creation of a national language for his native country. Most literature before his time had been written in Dano-Norwegan, although Bjornson did experiment briefly with writing in what was referred to as the New Norwegian language. Later, Bjornson regretted his decision to stop his work with New Norwegian, which he felt was an important part of the development of Norway’s national identity because it was further removed from Danish. Bjornson was also one of the original members of Norway’s Nobel Committee, which is known around the world for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize every year. Bjornson himself won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
