Hans mest kjente stykke er "Piano Concerto i A Minor." ----Formal English---- Edvard Grieg Edvard Grieg was a pianist and composer from Norway. His most famous piece is the "Piano Concerto in A Minor." He also wrote music that was used in Peer Gynt, a play written by the famous Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Grieg was born in 1843 to a merchant and his wife. Grieg's mother was a music teacher. In fact, she was his very first piano teacher, and he began to play when he was just six years old. Throughout the course of Grieg's life, music was always important. As a child, he often brought in pieces of the music he was working on. He also got to meet the famous violinist Ole Bull, who became Grieg's uncle by marrying his aunt. It was Bull who noticed Grieg's talent and talked his parents into sending him to the well-known Leipzig Conservatory. Although Grieg excelled while at the conservatory, he did not like the heavy discipline in place there. He almost died in 1860 when he contracted a very serious lung disease, but a year later, he gave his first concert as a pianist in Sweden. His first concert in Bergen, his hometown, came in 1862, after he had finished his studies. Much of Grieg's work was inspired by Norwegian folk music. Later in life he enjoyed much national fame. The government even awarded him a pension in honor of his work. In addition to his compositions and piano performances, he also made recordings for the gramophone and player piano. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! As you saddle up and head out over the hills, you spot some vultures in the trees. Seizing an opportunity, you call out in Norwegian, "Look, those vultures are eyeing that cheetah's lunch!" Surprised, he looks at YOU and not the vulture. Acting as if you don't notice, and not missing a beat, you call out in Norwegian, "Ooh, hurry! That quail is about to fly away!" Still looking shocked, he decides to try to trick you. He looks around and calls out in Norwegian, "Those ducks, they are bobbing in the water." Calmly, you reply in Norwegian, "Yes, there are a few in the water and few over there on the grass too." Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Mayhem The Norwegian black metal group Mayhem was put together in Oslo in 1984. Many people in the music industry see them as one of the pioneering groups in Norwegian black metal music. The band's trademark violent live performances have made it the center of controversy for much of its existence. Also, the facts that singer Per Yngve Ohlin committed suicide in 1991 and guitarist Oystein Aarseth was murdered by a former band member have made the history of the group as dark as its lyrics and music. Aarseth was the one who initially decided to start the band after being influenced by other well-known black metal groups like Motorhead and Slayer. A song by the band Venom, another group that inspired Aarseth, was the inspiration for the band's name. The band started with Aarseth on vocals and guitar, Jorn Stubberud on bass guitar, and Kjetil Manheim on drums. In the early years, they recruited Eirik Nordheim and Sven Erik Kristiansen for vocals. By 1988, Manheim had been replaced by Jan Axel Blomberg on drums and Per Yngve Ohlin on vocals. It was after Ohlin joined the band that they became particularly known for their violent performances. Often, while on stage performing, he would use broken glass and knives to cut himself. It was also common for the band to have the heads of sheep or pigs impaled and displayed up front on stakes. Throughout the years, at least eighteen different people have belonged to Mayhem. Of the men currently in the band, only one of them is an original founding member. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! ----Formal English---- Ole Bull Ole Bull, whose full name was Ole Bornemann Bull, was born in the town of Bergen, Norway. He had nine younger siblings, one of whom became a very well-known architect. Although Bull’s father wanted him to become a minister, he wanted to become a musician. When he was just five years old, he was already able to play of the songs that his mother played on the violin. By the time he was nine, he played a major role in Bergen’s theatre orchestra as first violin. He also played with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and was honored with many solos. Although his work is believed to include at least seventy different titles, only ten of them are known today. Bull traveled around the world, spending a lot of time in Germany, France, and the United States. His travels brought him into contact with Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst, a very famous violin virtuoso from Moravia. They also resulted in his setting up a colony in the United States. Although he called the colony New Norway, most people came to refer to it as Ole Bull Colony. He wanted to create a place where his fellow Norwegians who had settled in the U.S. could build a community. The area was located in Pennsylvania, and he even started work on a castle there, which was located at the highest point. He referred to that point as Valhalla, although the castle there was never finished. Bull also lived in and purchased a home in Maine, naming the property Ironwell because of the health benefits he believed came from the property’s well water. He and his wife had six children together, and she sometimes accompanied him on the piano when he played. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Gaahl Kristian Eivind Espedal, now known simply as Gaahl, his stage pseudonym, is a black metal singer who has been involved with various bands, including Gorgoroth, Gaahlskagg, Wardruna, and Trelldom. The Norwegian singer was born in 1975, and his first project was Trelldom, a band he founded in 1993 with two other musicians. In 1998 he started working with two more black metal bands. Gaahl is probably best known as the front man for the band Gorgoroth, which he joined in 1998. His tenure with that band has been quite controversial over the years. In 2002 he spent time in prison after being convicted of assault. The band was working on an album during this time, although Gaahl did not record the vocal pieces until after he was released from prison the following year. A year after Gaahl got out of prison, another controversy enveloped the band as a whole. They performed a concert in Poland with a number of satanic symbols on display and the heads of sheep impaled on stakes in front of the audience. They also had nude actors perform a mock crucifixion while covered in blood. Charges of animal cruelty and "religious offense" against the band were considered, although they were never officially charged because they did not realize that what they did was in violation of Polish law. In 2006, Gaahl was back in prison again, this time after being convicted of torture and threatening to make his victim drink his own blood, which he had collected in a cup. In all, Gaahl has been involved in about twenty different albums with various bands. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101.com! You learned a lot the last time you agreed to watch your niece...and this time, the joke's on her. Yes, last time, she thought she was so smart because she knew the Norwegian names for so many insects in your garden. But she is only five years old, and you are pretty sure that you have her this time! You have a bug day planned - of gardening again. She loves it, and it is an excellent chance for you to show off your new Norwegian insect vocabulary that you have been practicing. As you follow her out into the flower garden, she looks back at you with those big patronizingly sweet eyes and says in Norwegian, "Look, what is this bug called?" Oh, she's fast: she thinks you don't know this answer. You kneel down next to her, sneer on your face, and reply sweetly in Norwegian, "Honey, that is a spider, and it looks like it's protecting itself from you." Astonished, she whips her head around to face you and replies with a simple, "Oh." You point to another bug nearby and explain in Norwegian, "And look here, the cicadas are climbing up the tree." She stares at you in disbelief and replies in Norwegian, "I don't want to look at bugs any more, let's go work in the garden!" Looks like you beat her at her own game AND get some help with that unruly garden too! Nice job! Learning Norwegian with NorwegianClass101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Norwegian! Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Darkthrone The Norwegian band Darkthrone got together in 1986, starting out in the death metal genre but embracing more of a black metal sound four years later. They quickly became one of the most important bands in the black metal genre in Norway. The band's original name was Black Death, and the founding members were Ivar Enger, Anders Risberget, and Gylve Nagell. Just a year after they got together, they changed their name to Darkthrone and welcomed Dag Nilsen into the group. A year later, Ted Skjellum also joined the band. Beginning in 1991, the band changed its image a bit, adopting the use of corpse paint and pseudonyms for each band member just like black metal bands typically do. In 1991 they also worked on their second album, releasing it early the following year. At the time, the band's record label was hesitant to release it because the style was so divergent from the band's first album. However, by the time Darkthrone's third album came out, the band was considered an icon in the Norwegian black metal scene, and many fans considered this album one of the most influential in the entire genre. After the third album, the band was down to just two members. Only Nagell and Skjellum were left, and no one else would ever join the band. Darkthrone has released at least fourteen albums so far and has been featured on at least four tribute albums or compilations. In addition, they have recorded three EPs and five demos. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
