You have spoken with many of the company's staff and most of the staff seems very pleased with the way they are treated. You asked each one what their jobs entailed. A secretary you spoke with replied in Norwegian, "Typing and reading e-mails, making phone calls, answering customers' question...you know, the usual stuff." The next person you spoke with answered in Norwegian, "I attend meetings all day!" But they all seem happy...and the work is getting done. Wait...who is that? You ask a man sitting at a desk drinking coffee what he does all day. He replies in Norwegian, "I drink my coffee." Astonished, you ask him why he doesn't do anything else.  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #24 - Top 10 Norwegian Writers: Knut Hamsun | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:37

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! Norges Kong Haakon VI kalte ham "Norges sjel." ----Formal English---- Knut Hamsun Knut Hamsun was a Norwegian writer whose work spanned more than seven decades and included over twenty novels, one compilation of poetry, plays, essays, short stories, and a travelogue. Norway's King Haakon VI dubbed him "Norway's soul." He received the 1920 Nobel Prize for Literature. Hamsun firmly believed that writers should focus on the intricacies of the mind. He detested both naturalism and realism, two literary extremes that existed during his time. Hamsun was born in 1859 in the town of Lom. His birth name was Knud Pedersen, and he was the fourth son of a relatively poor couple. At the age of three, his family went to work his uncle's farm, and when he turned nine, he was sent to live with an uncle who needed help with his post office. Unfortunately, Hamsun's uncle was very abusive, and he apparently starved and beat Hamsun. Hamsun escaped from his uncle in 1874 and returned to his hometown of Lom, taking any job he could in order to make ends meet. When he was seventeen years old, he began to write and then spent some time in the United States, traveling and working on his writing. His novel Hunger was the first one that brought him success. It was about a writer who suffered so badly from hunger that it drove him nearly insane. Throughout most of Hamsun's novels, the theme of wandering comes up quite often. He also includes a lot of details about the natural world. His technique uses a lot of unspoken streams of thought, also known as interior monologue. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #21 - Top 10 Norwegian Writers: Jonas Lie | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:43

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Jonas Lie Jonas Lie wrote poems, novels, and plays, and is considered one of the Four Greats of Norwegian Literature. He was born in 1833 in Hokksund to a lawman who became sheriff of a remote port located above the Arctic Circle. At first, Lie attended naval school, but his eyesight was extremely poor, which hindered him from being able to perform the necessary tasks for his position at sea. After he left naval school, he attended a Catholic school until he matriculated to the University of Christiania, where he became friends with two of other Four Greats—Henrik Ibsen and Bjornstjerne Bjornson. He earned his law degree there and moved to Kongsvinger to begin practicing. There was not much demand for lawyers in the town Lie moved to, so he began to write for some of the local newspapers and journals to fill his time and pay the bills. His first book was a collection of poetry, although it did not do well. In the four years after that collection was published, he worked as a journalist, building his writing skills until 1874 when he was granted an artist salary by Norway’s parliament. Then Lie went on the road, traveling throughout Europe and stopping in Rome, Germany, and France. Finally, he returned to his native land of Norway in 1882, which began his most productive writing period. Most of his stories dealt with family life in Norway. Other commonly explored topics included commentary on the lives of the upper class. Lie married his cousin in 1860, and the couple had five children together. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
