Learn with Video #19 - Have Your Norwegian Skills Been Declared a Natural Disaster?! | File Type: video/x-m4v | Duration: 2:55

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101.com! Staring out the window at work today, you noticed some rain clouds rolling in. One of your coworkers heard a reporter on the radio say that there is a high probability the city will see torrential downpours too. Back home you have seen the very worst of thunderstorms, so you really weren't too worried...that is, until you got off work! As you walk out the door of your office, you are astonished to see that those little rainclouds have now turned into huge back clouds shadowing the city! You decide you just need to get home quickly. However, as you are driving home the rain starts coming down so hard you can't see the road in front of you! You pull over and flip on the radio, hoping you can make out enough Norwegian to pick up what they are saying on the weather reports. Unfortunately, the reporters and meteorologists are all talking so rapidly and excitedly that you can't make out anything they are saying in Norwegian. Too bad too...because one man just reported in Norwegian, "The hurricane is blowing in from the sea!!!" Sitting on the side of the highway in your car is probably not the safest place to be, but then, you don't know what's coming anyway... NorwegianClass101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Norwegian! This Norwegian Video Vocabulary lesson will teach you how to talk about natural disasters in Norwegian. In this Norwegian vocabulary video, you will learn Norwegian by watching the video, seeing both Norwegian and Norwegian translations describing the video, and all while listening to the Norwegian translations being read aloud by our native Norwegian speakers.  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #19 - Top 10 Norwegian Writers: Alexander Kielland | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:38

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Alexander Kielland Alexander Kielland is considered one of the Four Greats of Norwegian literature. The writer was born in Stavanger in 1849 to Consul Jens Zetlitz Kielland. His brother was the famous landscape painter Kitty Lange Kielland. Although Kielland was born into a very wealthy family, he also thought much about the plight of the lower class workers. Supposedly he was a benevolent factory owner who treated his workers very well. Much of his work was satire that focused on the lives of the lower classes and provided commentary about the upper classes. His well-known trilogy, which started with the book Gift, looked closely at the life of the clergy and what was important to them. Kielland's influences included many names from French literature as well as Charles Dickens and John Stuart Mill. His novels in particular fell largely in the genre of realism and sharply rejected naturalism, which was the other prevalent literary trend of his day. Kielland became the mayor of Stavanger in 1891 and was then selected as governor of the county in 1902. Kielland died in 1906, supposedly from obesity. At least one biographer reports that as early as the 1880s, Kielland had been having problems with shortness of breath. He also had a number of heart attacks and kept gaining weight. Those who knew him said that he loved food and had many difficulties controlling himself when it came to the foods that he loved. In all, Kielland is credited with at least three essays, six plays, nine novels, and three books of short stories. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Jo Nesbø Jo Nesbø is a Norwegian writer whose work has now been translated into more than forty different languages. He has been nominated for an Edgar Award and is mostly known for his novels featuring the character of Detective Harry Hole. His series of children's books about Doctor Proctor has also become excessively popular. In addition, he is the lead singer for Di Derre, a rock band in Norway. Nesbø was born in Oslo and earned his Economics and Business degree from the Norwegian School of Economics. Before he became a full-time writer, he worked as a stockbroker and did some freelance journalism on the side. He started out with a promising future as a soccer player, but after he broke the ligaments in one knee, he was unable to play professionally. During his younger years, Nesbø was so focused on playing soccer professionally that his grades suffered. By the time he had graduated from high school, he realized that his grades were so poor that he couldn't do very much. He decided then to join the military and work on bringing his grades up, eventually becoming eligible for the Norwegian School of Economics. Nesbø has received numerous awards for his literary work, including the Riverton Prize, the Glass Key Award, and the Norwegian Booksellers' Prize for Best Novel of the Year. So far his credits include nine novels in the Harry Hole series, three Doctor Proctor books, and four stand-alone novels. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Your teacher hands out a list of "things to look out for" - written entirely in Norwegian! Not being able to make out some of the Norwegian words on the list, you try to partner up with someone, but everyone seems to have turned it into a competition to see who can find things first. Suddenly, a classmate screams out in Norwegian, "I found one!! Look, that raccoon is cracking and munching peanuts!" Everyone moans, knowing that classmate is now in the lead, but you strain your neck, struggling to see what in the world she found. Finding nothing as the group moves on quickly, you jot down as much as you can remember - you will just have to look it up when you get home. Ugh. You are startled as another classmate cries out in Norwegian, "I know what the eagle eats! It's swooping down for fish!" Your fellow classmates cry out in unison, "Ahhh!!" as you again jot down the Norwegian words you do not recognize. It's too bad you can't enjoy this hike through the beautiful forest.  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #15 - Top 10 Norwegian Musicians: Alf Prøysen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:40

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Alf Prøysen Alf Proysen was born in Rudshogda in Norway. He was a very well-known Norwegian musician and writer. Many Norwegians consider him to be one of their culture’s most important personalities during the 1900s because of his many high-profile contributions to television, radio, music, and literature. He even wrote one novel, which was quite successful. Probably his most well-known contributions to the literary sphere in Norway, however, were his stories featuring Mrs. Pepperpot, a lady who sometimes randomly shrank down until she was as small as a teaspoon. Proysen was born in 1914 and lived the life of a tenant farmer. The farm where he grew up is now a museum. Much of his work illustrated the vast difference between the upper and lower classes. Proysen’s life seemed to be set out before him from the time he was a young lad. It was only natural that he would get a job working on a farm, but he got a scholarship to attend school and began selling his writings to other students at his school. When school ended, he became a cook, but he particularly loathed that job. Over time, he was promoted to the position of stable keeper, but he continued to write, draw, and act in his spare time. Eventually, after his first poem was published, he traveled to another town and began to work on farms there, continuing with his art and acting in his spare time. In 1948 his career really began to take off as he built a name for himself in the arts community. He also married that year, and he and his wife ended up having two children. He died from cancer at age fifty-six. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
