 Advanced Audio Blog S2 #19 - Top 10 Norwegian Writers: Alexander Kielland | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:38

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Alexander Kielland Alexander Kielland is considered one of the Four Greats of Norwegian literature. The writer was born in Stavanger in 1849 to Consul Jens Zetlitz Kielland. His brother was the famous landscape painter Kitty Lange Kielland. Although Kielland was born into a very wealthy family, he also thought much about the plight of the lower class workers. Supposedly he was a benevolent factory owner who treated his workers very well. Much of his work was satire that focused on the lives of the lower classes and provided commentary about the upper classes. His well-known trilogy, which started with the book Gift, looked closely at the life of the clergy and what was important to them. Kielland's influences included many names from French literature as well as Charles Dickens and John Stuart Mill. His novels in particular fell largely in the genre of realism and sharply rejected naturalism, which was the other prevalent literary trend of his day. Kielland became the mayor of Stavanger in 1891 and was then selected as governor of the county in 1902. Kielland died in 1906, supposedly from obesity. At least one biographer reports that as early as the 1880s, Kielland had been having problems with shortness of breath. He also had a number of heart attacks and kept gaining weight. Those who knew him said that he loved food and had many difficulties controlling himself when it came to the foods that he loved. In all, Kielland is credited with at least three essays, six plays, nine novels, and three books of short stories. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #6 - Top 10 Norwegian Musicians: Jokke & Valentinerne | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:28

Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101! Don't forget to stop by NorwegianClass101.com for more great Norwegian Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Jokke & Valentinerne Jokke & Valentinerne was founded in 1982 by Joachim Nielsen, May-Irne Aasen, and Hakon Torgersen. Nielsen was the front man and lead singer, while Aasen played drums and Torgersen played bass guitar. The Norwegian band was unusual in its own country because Nielsen, who wrote most of their songs, wrote the lyrics in Norwegian. During the 1980s, most Norwegian bands wrote and performed their lyrics in English because that was what made them popular all over the world. Jokke & Valentinerne is considered one of the Great Four rock bands of the decade. The band broke up in 1994, although they did some performances together from time to time after the break. Nielsen died of a heroin overdose in 2000, although the other band members are still living. He was just thirty-six years old when he died. One recurrent theme that keeps appearing in the band's song lyrics is alcohol, and Nielsen was known for drinking on stage during their performances. Probably the most notable time he appeared on stage while drunk was during the Spellemannprisen awards, which are similar to the Grammys in the U.S. He appeared drunk when he went on stage to accept their award. One of the reasons alcohol appears so much in the band's lyrics is because most of their stories are about the anti-hero, the misfit, and the so-called underdog. The songs are mainly about trying to live life with difficulties stacked up against you. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
