----Formal English---- Fredrikstad Fortress Fredrikstad Fortress stands just outside of Fredrikstad, Norway. The fortification was home to the Ostfold Regiment, and it served to protect the eastern side of Oslo Fjord. Fredrikstad Fortress was built between 1663 and 1666 on the orders of King Frederick II. The fortress was built on the place where a temporary fortress had been located just two decades earlier. It was closed in 1903, but was still used as a garrison after being shut down. The fortress at Fredrikstad is very unique in the nation of Norway because it is the only one that has been totally preserved so that it looks just like it did when it was in use. Since being completely shut down in 2002, the fortress has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Norway. Inside of Fredrikstad Fortress, visitors will find a number of fortifications, including Kongsten Fort, Huth Fort, and Slevik Battery. Each one of these fortifications was an important part of the military stronghold. Another important feature of the base was the use of moats, which provided additional defenses inside the base itself. The design of the fortress was based on the Dutch system and also featured a number of spaces that held cannons to further help defend the base and the city of Fredrikstad. In the city itself visitors will also find much to do. The art scene there is extremely active, and there are plenty of small shops and even a flea market, full of second-hand items, held every Saturday. --------------------------- Learn Norwegian with NorwegianClass101!
