But this seemingly bitter and reductive slogan is actually quite clever. When taken literally, "school sucks" is perhaps the most accurate and astute synopsis of the system I've ever heard. Here's why... 1. The twelve-year process of an American public education has a dramatic effect on the mind of a child. When we first enter school at age six, many of our best personal attributes are already in place. We are curious, innovative, unique, creative and hopeful in ways that we will rarely be able to replicate throughout the rest of our lives. But over time, school sucks those essential attributes out of too many of us...and replaces them with predictability, obedience and apathy. 2. The public school system sucks off the productive capacity of hard-working people. The system is coercively funded through taxation. In other words, whether public education succeeds or fails (spoiler alert: it fails) at providing real education to the public, the cost goes up every year. There are no refunds. The END of Public Education? 1. END: It's over, irrelevant, useless, needs to be done away with. Does more harm than good. 2. END: (As in means to an end) We'll also explore the true intentions behind the system, which have very little to do with real education. There is substantial evidence that its failure to educate is no accident. Above all, this is a show about what one might do about these problems...

117 (Supplemental): Brett On Porc Therapy With Stephanie Murphy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5150

Porc Therapy is a pro-freedom relationship talk show that takes a unique look at the question of how we can attain the most individual liberty possible, starting with our personal lives and relationships with others. On Porc Therapy, host Stephanie Murphy explores ways to apply voluntaryist or libertarian principles – for example, peace, honesty, respect for natural rights, empathy and compassion, voluntary association, and individual sovereignty – to relationships with friends, loved ones, family, neighbors, coworkers, and more. Stephanie looks at current social norms and traditions through a critical lens, and tries to apply a rational perspective to every subject that is raised on Porc Therapy. The result is a show that is very different from traditional relationship talk shows. During the show, Stephanie discusses listener questions, articles, news items, and takes phone calls. Porc Therapy is a live radio show and podcast. Topics: What is unschooling?; things you can do with legos; kids, school, and feelings; Connie, a radical homeschooling mom, shares her experiences about parenting and liberty; the atrocities of war and people’s reactions to them.  116 (Keys Installment #7): Dale J. Stephens and the Uncollege Movement | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2440

Imagine a door to complete freedom, abounding opportunity and greater personal satisfaction... Public education is the lock. This is the sixth in a series of non-sequential shows about finding keys. Dale J. Stephens joins me to discuss the Uncollege movement. Topics: (from dalejstephens.com) Hacking Your Education If you want to be unremarkably average, go to college, turn in your homework, and graduate summa cum laude. You’ll have a college degree to your name, but you won’t be any closer to changing the world. The path to wild success does not involve jumping through hoops. If you want to succeed you cannot be a lemming. We all have something that makes us different in one way or another–and society has trained us to be ashamed of our unconventional quirks. By using your unique qualities to your advantage, you can turn the conformist paradigm on its head and speed along the path to success. Ultimately the only authority you need is your own, and by defining success for yourself you’ll make happiness readily achievable. Working with the Millennial Generation 22.4% of college graduates under 25 are unemployed. That means that only the best and the brightest are getting jobs—but it’s difficult to interface with these digital natives. Information is cheap and access is instant. We see no separation between work and life—Twitter and Facebook are part of our workflow. These changes are difficult for previous generations—and institutions—to understand. Because Dale bridges the gap between youth and adults, he doesn’t just relate to both but shares their experiences, fears, and challenges. He can help you understand how to successfully work with the leaders of tomorrow. The UnCollege Movement: Reinventing Higher Education College provides four things—knowledge, network, community, and signal—yet technology is changing faster than educational institutions. The university is at a crossroads, trying to stay competitive in a constantly changing market while still delivering a quality education at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the university is failing on both counts: tuition is skyrocketing while student learning is plummeting. What is the future of higher education? This talk will address the coming transformation of education, both inside and outside institutions.  115: School Sucks At the Movies (#2) - Charlie Bartlett | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3874

Three listeners - Evan, James, and Sarah - join me to discuss the film, Charlie Bartlett. Cast: Tyler Hilton, Anton Yelchin, Hope Davis, Megan Park, Kat Dennings and Robert Downey Jr. Summary: Wealthy teenager Charlie Bartlett (Yelchin) is failing miserably at fitting in at a new public high school run by the world-weary Principal Gardner (Downey, Jr.). As he begins to better understand the social hierarchy, Charlie's honest charm and likability positions him as the resident "psychiatrist" dishing out advice, and the occasional prescription with his partner and fellow student, Murphy Bivens (Hilton), to other students in need. Along the way, he decides to take some of his own advice, find romance, and learn to accept who he is, thus wielding a witty dark comedy about the angst-filled years before college.
