As the world premiere of his new film, Artik, looms on the horizon, Tom Botchii Skowronski takes time out of his schedule to chat with Jake about his work, influences, and love of Krispy Kreme donuts. The film is about a serial killer (Jerry G. Angelo), obsessed with comic books. teaching his son (Gavin White) how to effectively take up his mantle. All of this is spoiled when a mysterious stranger (Chase Williamson) looks to help the struggling teen. The stranger implores a local counsellor (Matt Mercer) for help.  11 Minutes: https://vimeo.com/96462953 horror movie, movie review, interview, chat, behind the scenes, exclusive, pro wrestling, luke harper, bray wyatt, straight edge, cm punk --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/slasherspod/support

 Eight Legged Freaks (2002) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:38:03

Remember when David Arquette just played a wrestler and was not actually having deathmatches on the weekends? Well, let's hope his real life persona does not replicate his role in this film, because I do not want to deal with giant, mutant spiders! This week is the 2002 flop Eight Legged Freaks. We analyze why the film likely failed based on its competition and as always, do a scene by scene analysis.  The movie stars Arquette (Scream, Ready to Rumble) as Chris McCormick, the prodigal son of the town, returning after the death of his father. He reignites an old love of Sheriff Samantha Parker (Kari Wuhrer,  Anaconda, Thinner, Swamp Thing) a strong willed and able-bodied single mom. Her children Mike (Scott Terra) and Ashley (Scarlett Johansson, Iron Man 2, Avengers, Ghost World) are struggling with teen angst, oh and yeah-- those pesky mutant spiders.  The movie is not immaculate, but it is fun and we hope you enjoy!  Arachnophobia (1990) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:37:33

You've seen Steven Spielberg's Jaws, right? That movie we covered a few weeks ago? Yeah, well have you ever wanted to see the same movie with the guy from Dumb and Dumber and eight legs? Boom-- Arachnophobia!  All kidding aside, this is a very fun film, written by Don Jakoby and directed by co-founder of Amblin Entertainment, Frank Marshall. The film stars Jeff Daniels, with possibly the best character captured on celluloid: Delbert McClintock, as played by the magnificent John Goodman.  The movie involves a small town, gripped in terror as the corpse of a cameraman brings back a deadly spider, that slings its little pecker around impregnating the local spiders to make cute, but deadly, baby spiders.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Cry Havoc with their song Venomous Riptide off their track on No Good Deed Left Unpunished, on Die Hipster Records. Also, if you would like to help support the show, please consider grabbing a copy of the film through our Amazon affiliate link while it is on sale! https://amzn.to/2YiFLjh If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Maximum Overdrive (1986) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:42:12

Have you ever wondered what it's like to have a rapid hallucination in a dizzying blur that was induced by cocaine, while reading a short story by Stephen King that did not make any sense? Well, that is basically Maximum Overdrive. Of all the stories he'd written, the man chose to adapt his short story, Trucks, which was famously compiled in the Night Shift compilation, to be his first (and only) feature film. All of the promotion materials basically had King criticizing all of the prior directors who'd adapted his works, then claiming he thought he could do better. Spoiler, he couldn't.  The film follows Emilio Estevez (The Breakfast Club, The Outsiders, Repo Man) as Bill Robinson, an ex con, working in a crappy diner, slinging hash browns while his very pro-second-amendment boss commits wage and hour fraud. Suddenly, due to the influence of both a comet and aliens, all technology begins to go haywire and attack humans. Each machine has its own sentience, which causes a whole slew of perplexing logical problems, but if you are on as much cocaine as King was admittedly at the time, it numbs that center of your brain and you can just enjoy.   The film also features Yeardly Smith (The Simpsons), Pat Hingle (Batman), Laura Harrington (What's Eating Gilber Grape, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension), and J.C. Quinn (Abyss, The Prophecy).  This week's "Hidden Track," is Olde Tigers, with their song Losing Battle. https://oldetigers.bandcamp.com/ If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  As Above, So Below (2014) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:44:41

While not as well-regarded as its source material, Dante Alighieri's Inferno, As Above, So Below certainly leaves an impression. The film was written and directed by John Erick Dowdle, with partial writing credits to his brother, John. The plot surrounds Scarlett Marlowe (Perdita Weeks) in her quest for the Philosopher's Stone, documented by camera man Benji (Edwin Hodge). Along the way, she joins up with estranged lover, George (Ben Feldman, Friday the 13th, Cloverfield).  As they descend into (the real) catacombs beneath France, each floor represents a different circle of hell. Though not a direct replication of Alighieri's work, the framework gives a much deeper story than the typical found footage film. Some good practical effects and fair acting make this film a must see for anyone with nothing better to do. If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Vampire Hunter D (1985) & Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:45:14

Who knew that when we surveyed our fans they would be so passionate about anime? We had no idea we would ever do an anime movie review and yet, in this episode we review two! The films are Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The films are based on a lonstanding series of Japanese novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. The first film was released in 1985 and directed by Toyoo Ashida. The second film, released in 2000, was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. The English dub on the films features some renowned voice actor, including most notably, John DiMaggio (Chowder, Futurama, Adventure Time).  Both films center around a half-vampire, half-human hybrid, known only as D. This cloaked stranger has an odd, wisecracking face in his palm, which has all sorts of unexplained powers and is referred to either as a parasite or a symbiote. In the 1985 feature, he is avenging a young woman who was bitten by a powerful vampire noble. In the 2000 feature, our hero is tracking a vampire who has seemingly kidnapped a beautiful woman, only to find that blah blah something about love.  This week's "Hidden Track" is by GORE. Their song Ashtray / Libido can be found here: https://borehardcore.bandcamp.com/album/bore. The band has a thriving instagram and facebook account, which you should probably like.  If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Jaws (1975) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:33:40

Jaws is something of a miracle. Even under the best of circumstances, it would have been a major cinematic achievement and surely a classic. When you learn of what struggles they had with production, this movie becomes a legend. The film was directed by a fledgling artist, Steven Spielberg. It is based on a novel by Peter Benchley, which was a massive success in its own right. Roy Scheider (The French Connection, All That Jazz, 2001: A Space Odyssey), Robert Shaw (A Man for All Seasons, From Russia With Love), and Richard Dreyfuss (What About Bob?, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) star in the film and work together seamlessly.  The premise of the film is so simple, it is elegant. Scheider once noted that the film was a success worldwide because it did not need words to articulate the story. This is apparent in everything from the special effects to the slower, more intimate moments such as when Brody interacts with his sons. If you have not seen it, please use this podcast as an excuse to do so, because it has aged remarkably well given the monumental changes in the industry since its release.  The "Hidden Track" this week is by Black Ferns, with their song "This Illusion." Be sure to check out their upcoming album. Devices, which will release in October. If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  The Loved Ones (2009) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:31:45

Haven't you ever heard of that sacred pact between weirdos? Y'know where the weird kids to some extent rally against normal people and look out for one another? Oh right, because that doesn't exist and real weirdos have their dad nail your feet to the linoleum in the kitchen with a steak knife. This week's review is The Loved Ones, written and directed by Sean Byrne. The film stars a very capable cast, who us ignorant Americans know very little about.  Also, as you cam see, this week is a three-man booth, which you can anticipate from now on. That's right, Producer C.H.A.D is stepping out from behind the curtain to his proper place in the spotlight... that sexy devil.  The "Hidden Track" this week is Gravespell, with their song"IGNIS." It fits pretty perfectly with the film, so please stick around to check it out. They are playing on 7/4/19 at the Soda Bar in San Diego.  High Tension (2003) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:27:45

We fancy. Or, as the French would say, "nous avons envie." That's right, we are reviewing a foreign film, but you would hardly notice, because the visuals tell the story so well. This week is High Tension, also known as "Switchblade Romance." While the switchblade imagery does play into the themes in the film somewhat, High Tension is a much more appropriate title, given that everything rises to a fever pitch throughout the very manageable 92 minute run time.  The film has been criticized for its similarities to Intensity, by Dean Koontz, the comparisons have likely prompted even more people to see the film. The film was directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Maniac, Piranha 3D, Crawl). It stars Cécile de France, Maïwenn, and Philippe Nahon. Overall, it is a sight to behold from the torrential geysers of blood, to the stellar showings of fear in the actresses.  This week's "Hidden Track" is 911 by Babe Patrol. If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Cujo (1983) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:42:54

Picture this, you are freezing to death under the crippling weight of an avalanche. Suddenly, a slobbering mess of a dog with some booze barrel unearths you and saves your life. Now imagine roughly the same dog, in the dead of summer, with rabies. Pretty different, right? Well that's basically Stephen King's Cujo.  The film starts Dee Wallace, the adulterous Donna Trenton, who just wants her car fixed and her son, Tad (Danny Pintauro) to stop crying for his dad, Vic (Daniel Hugh Kelly). The film pretty drastically modified the end of the book, but King did the same in his initial draft of the screenplay. Overall, this is inarguably one of the best King adaptations, which is sadly not paraded through the streets on a gold-gilded throne.  If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Body Bags (1993) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:39:31

Remember the longstanding Showtime horror anthology TV series, Body Bags? No? Oh right, because the project got cancelled and they turned it into a movie. The show was intended to be their response to Tales from the Crypt, in an ill-fated pursuit.  The three shorts were directed by horror legends John Carpenter (The Thing, Halloween, Christine)and Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Lifeforce, Poltergeist). Carpenter and Hooper both play bit parts in the movie, with Carpenter serving as the host, a sarcastic, rotting corpse, and Hooper as a coroner.  Horror legends, Wes Craven and Sam Raimi, also have cameos that are pretty great. Mark Hammill (Star Wards, The Guyver, Batman the Animated Series) shows his taint, butt, and balls, in a very ambitious move that cannot be unseen.  David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London, Ice Cream Man) plays a charming gas station patron who fights worse than Gandhi.  The "Hidden Track" is from Golgothan Remains, titled From Chaos It has Come. Be sure to check out their shows at Heathen Fest III 6/1/19, Moruya Waterfront Hotel, The Brightside Brisbane 6/21/19, Crowbar on 6/23/19, and back to Crowbar on 7/6/19.If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  1408 (2007) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:33:11

This week, Jake and his bodaciously beautiful bride, Ciara, review 1408. This Stephen King adaptation is somewhat unique, given that the story originated as an example in On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. He later revisited the characters and finished the story, collecting it with two others in an audiobook series, Blood and Smoke.  The story surrounds Mike Enslin, played by John Cusack (Gross Point Blank, Say Anything, High Fidelity). This jaded, cynical writer lives something of a vagabond lifestyle, going to various allegedly haunted hotel rooms, reporting on his experiences in trite paperback novels. That is, until he receives an anonymous postcard advising him of the Dolphin Hotel. The manager, Gerald Olin, is played by the magnanimous Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Avengers, Cell). Olin tries somewhat desperately to talk Mike out of it, but our wry writer won’t be dissuaded and enters the room where no one has lasted more than 60 minutes anyway.  This week’s “Hidden Track” is from Spirit Healer. The song is A Memory of the Ritual on their new record, Hollowform. Be sure to check them out on Spotify and read the accompanying short story. If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.
