Summary: This week, Jake and his bodaciously beautiful bride, Ciara, review 1408. This Stephen King adaptation is somewhat unique, given that the story originated as an example in On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. He later revisited the characters and finished the story, collecting it with two others in an audiobook series, Blood and Smoke.  The story surrounds Mike Enslin, played by John Cusack (Gross Point Blank, Say Anything, High Fidelity). This jaded, cynical writer lives something of a vagabond lifestyle, going to various allegedly haunted hotel rooms, reporting on his experiences in trite paperback novels. That is, until he receives an anonymous postcard advising him of the Dolphin Hotel. The manager, Gerald Olin, is played by the magnanimous Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Avengers, Cell). Olin tries somewhat desperately to talk Mike out of it, but our wry writer won’t be dissuaded and enters the room where no one has lasted more than 60 minutes anyway.  This week’s “Hidden Track” is from Spirit Healer. The song is A Memory of the Ritual on their new record, Hollowform.
