 Thrill Kill | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:07

Sure, it was originally a sports game based on ancient pok-ta-pok, and yeah, the story is just Eternal Champion, and okay, I'll admit that the character designs look like the dregs of DeviantArt, but damn, I wish that Thrill Kill actually came out.  On this episode, my good friend, Yeti, joins me to discuss the game that never was, and the game it became.  The game would later be repurposed as Wu Tang: Shaolin Style (which friggin' rips, by the way). Anyone who has ever played the Def Jam wrestling series will surely see a clear influence in the cartoony style and somewhat free roaming nature in the square playable areas.  The franchise had a comic book deal with Malibu Comics at one point. We talk about the infamous E3 98 event, wherein the developers made interesting choices for last-minute replacement for actresses depicting two of the characters.  At one point, Virgin Interactive was literally hucking boxes full of porn into the developer, Paradox's offices to inspire the first ever MA rated game, but then they realize that retailers would not be keen on that sort of thing, and then the tone changed and everything got dialed back.  Things got even worse with trade deals, until one unnamed champion leaked a full version of the game online in a playable Rom.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Next Attempt, with their song 50 or 60hz. www.facebook.com/NextAttemptOfficial ; @nextattemptofficial If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Blood Harvest (1985) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:11:10

No amount of typing will save our downloads on this episode. No one will give a shit about this movie. Frankly, the people who made it didn't even care. Aside from a great poster, Blood Harvest does not have much going for it. Still, our buddy, Doug Waugh, joins us to review this thing.  Directed by Bill Rebane, who also directed Monster a Go Go, Twister's Revenge, and more schlocky goodness. He actually approached Tiny Tim at a beer festival and paid him $1,000 to be in the picture.  Virtually none of the actors had any other credits, and most of the crew languished in obscurity.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Sky Tigers.  The Bad Batch (2016) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:15:37

This week's episode is on a more obscure title this week, that has languished on many of your watch lists on Netflix for years.  Written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, a very unique filmmaker. We detail her meetings wiht both Keanu Reeves and Jim Carey, which are wholly unlike any other we've ever heard of.  The film stars Suki Waterhouse as the incompletely cannibalized protagonist, Arlen. She is joined onscreen by Jason Momoa of Justice League and Game of Thrones fame. Fun thought, which IP do fans hate more after that last season of GoT? Superman's creepy CGI lip looks pretty appealing right now, eh? We discuss the visual storytelling of the film, which is wholly without dialogue for the opening act. There is an inarguable style to the film, but does it suite the narrative? We answer those questions and many more.  This week's "Hidden Track" is A New Chapter, with their song Broken Castle from their new EP Myself // Nevermore.  The Misfits- Walk Among Us (1982) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:29:12

This episode features our pal, Jonny Disaster, from "Hidden Tracks" alumni Cry Havoc! Unsurprisingly, they are the Hidden Track on this episode, with their classic song, "Fuck You! Just Die," from their classic album, "...And Let Slip the Dogs of War." On this episode, we give a brief history of the band, The Misfits, in its many incarnations: from humble origins on 4/25/77 at the original CBGB, to a reunion that everyone said was impossible.  We also talk about each of the band members and their prior and subsequent projects. For instance, singer, Glenn Danzig, would later be in Samhain and Danzig. He went on to direct the baffling Verotika, based on his own comicbook series of the same name.  Jerry Only and his real life brother, Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, would later reform the band with Michale Graves and Dr. C.H.U.D., even wrestling alongside Vampiro and ICP in WCW.  We do a song-by-song breakdown of the album, which clocks in at a brisk 24:19. In classic Slashers fashion, we also detail the source material for the songs, mostly film classics. The songs include: 20 Eyes, I Turned into a Martian, All Hell Breaks Loose, Vampira, Nike-A-Go-Go, Hate Breeders, Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?, Night of the Living Dead, Skulls, Violent World, Devils Whorehouse, Astro Zombies, and Braineaters. We even discuss the recently restored music video for Braineaters.  If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  The Undertaker | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:37:33

Born Mark William Calaway, this ginger giant went on to become possibly the most long-tenured, scandal free pro wrestler of all time: The Undertaker.  Don't care about wrestling? Well this episode is still worth your time as this man's career is prolific and unlike any other. Also, I mean... he's a zombie priest with a dayjob at a mortuary, or something? I mean, he's like The Tall Man from Phantasm with some spandex and biker tattoos.  Whether you know him as The Dead Man, The Phenom, The American Badass, or Big Evil, Calaway has been integral in the longstanding success of the WWE. Moreover, he helped carry character based, spooky wrestling through the gritty and hyper-realistic "Attitude Era." In this episode we are joined by Micah Rose, more commonly known as his wrestling persona Caesar, of The Panel Discussion Podcast: http://bicbp-radio.com/the-panel-discussion/ Micah also has a new podcast, Damn That's Scary, that can be found here https://open.spotify.com/show/6dNFkHscIpEeHuEzUavabC?si=rU61nR6xQ1KodTqy84KpQQ Did you know "Mean" Mark was trained by Don Jardine and Buzz Sawyer? Jardine was a masked wrestler known as "The Spoiler," and that fancy move 'Taker does walking on the top rope? Yeah, that's an homage to him.  We discuss the pre-WWE career of Calaway, which had him actually beaten by Bruiser Brody, and sharing the stage with lifelong friends such as Paul Heyman. His gimmicks there, from The Punisher, to Dice Morgan, all sowed the seeds of the character to come.  We then detail Calaway's WWE career, his notable feuds, special effects, matches, and gimmick changes. We also get into the fact that he legitimately feared he would be debuting as The Gobblety Gooker.  We wrap things up by discussing the best/ worst Undertaker ripoffs we have ever seen.   This week's "Hidden Track" is Morning Coffee with their song Snakes Love Golden Skin. https://morningxcoffee.bandcamp.com/ If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  The Cell (2000) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:14:17

Remember that movie with Jennifer Lopez (Anaconda, Gigli, Enough) where the horse gets cross-sectioned? Yup, that is how I have had to describe this movie to anyone I've mentioned it to, otherwise they would have no idea what I was talking about.  It is hard to call the film a cult classic, given that it was a commercial success, and its name earned enough notoriety to be bastardized with an unnecessary and unrelated sequel.  The film was directed by Tarsem Singh, a notorious music video director... AND IT SHOWS! Having worked with bands like R.E.M. and En Vogue, he took his talents to the silver screen with this film, written by Mark Protosevich. Protosevich basically hated the film and disowned it because of all of the changes in his work. Which is odd for a guy who wrote a remake of the Poseidon Adventure and did the third attempt at an I am Legend adaptation by Richard Matheson.  Music by Howard Shore, you know that guy who wrote the backdrop to every movie you've ever seen? Yeah, that guy.  Jennifer Lopez plays Dr. Catherine Deane. When she is not smoking those addictive marijuanas in her underpants, she is diving into people's dreams? subconscious? We detail her humble origin as a back up dancer in the sketch comedy show In Living Color, though to her amazing Super Bowl performance this last year.  Vincent D'Onofrio (Daredevil, Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black) plays Carl Rudolph Stargher. I would really love to be a fly on the wall while this fella has coffee with Buffalo Bill. Anyone else? Just me?  Vince Vaughn, hot off the heels of his terrible Anthony Perkins impersonation in Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot Psycho remake, plays Special Agent Peter Novak. Just... no.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Court Order with their song, Poor Excuse, off their upcoming self-titled record.  Battle of the Cryptids: International Edition | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:04:22

This week's episode is another Battle of the Cryptids; however, this time it is all international creatures! Here are the competitors:  Lagarfljót Worm, we get into the history of this creature, which is officially recognized by a "Truth Commission." Mngwa, is a sassy Tasmanian cat. Minhocão, is a giant Brazilian worm Mapinguari, a hairy humanoid cyclops with a gaping mouth on its belly, or a relict giant ground sloth Elwetritsch, aa scaly, big-breasted chicken with antlers.  Bukit Timah Monkey Man, seen as far back as 1805 Loch Ness Monster, basically the most famous cryptid like ever. Right? Yeti, basically the second most famous cryptid like ever. Right? Yeren, basically a Chinese yeti, with over 400 alleged sightings. You may recall this cryptid appeared in John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China.  Ahool, a giant chimpanzee-faced bat.  Beast of Bodmin Moor, a prowling jungle cat from pippity poppity ol' England. Kraken, the giant Scandinavian cephalopod... not Roman or Greek like Clash of the Titans would lead you to believe.  Bunyip, a giant feral hippopotamus, which translates to "Evil Spirit." Ningen, not all monsters need fangs and spikes to  Leprechaun, who used to wear red, not green. Nuts, right? Mongolian Death Worm, or Olgoi-khorkhoi, is basically a sand worm from Dune covered in bones, totally poisonous, and able to emit electrical shocks.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Thorns by Resistor. https://linktr.ee/weareresistor If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Piranha (1978) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:45

This is Steven Spielberg's favorite Jaws ripoff, so it should be yours too. Piranha was the creature feature that catapulted Joe Dante into further works such as The Howling and Gremlins.  Dante has been very candid about taking the job from producer, Roger Corman, to allow his personal friend to direct Rock N' Roll High School instead. Imagine what the world would be like now without that change. Like seriously, we might not even have the PG-13 rating system! The special effects were done by Rob Bottin, the same upstart who did the creature effects for Humanoids from the Deep.  The script had a significant rewrite by John Sayles, based on the success of his book, Pride of the Bimbos, from 1975. He went on to write Alligator, Battle Beyond the Stars, and an early draft of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (when it was still titled "Night Skies").  As aforementioned, the film was produced by the legendary, Roger Corman. Having produced over 400 films, the 94 year old stud and his production company, New World Pictures, is not likely to ever be surpassed, whether in volume or quality.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Sissyfit, with their song, She, Lilith, Regrets You, off their EP, Lilith, released earlier this year.  Humanoids from the Deep (1980) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:09:18

The movie so nice, Roger Corman made it twice: Humanoids from the Deep. On this episode we discuss both versions, as well as the graphic novel of the same name. We also talk the controversy between Corman and director, Barbara Peeters. Y'know, when Corman thought the movie wasn't salacious enough, so he went and shot his own clips of increased violence and nudity and put it in the movie over Peeters' objection?  Corman, now 94, has produced over 400 films. He also has helped launch the careers of Joe Dante, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, James Horner, and Ron Howard.  Creature effects were provided by Rob Bottin. While Bottin was only 17 at the time, this would go on to have a prolific film career working on such movies as The Fog, The Thing, RoboCop, Total Recall, and Se7en. The score, prepared by James Horner, was fully executed in just 14 days. Horner also did the score for Aliens, Krull, and Cocoon. The remake was made for Showtime and released 9/14/96, through New Horizons. The film was written and directed by Jeff Yonis. What cheap workaround did they do with this film to keep costs down? Oh, we talk about it for sure.  The comic was written and illustrated by Benjamin Hall in 2010. Fittingly, it was released by Bluewater Productions. Our special guest host is Doug Waugh, director of Grosshouse, Grosshouse 2, and Don't Touch That Dial, available here: https://amzn.to/2DAdr7f ; https://channelstore.roku.com/details/57960/b-movie-tv ;https://troma.vhx.tv/don-t-touch-that-dial This week's "Hidden Track" is Bolonium with their song, Pain in the Brain! https://bolonium.bandcamp.com/ ; http://needlejuicerecords.com/ ; https://www.youtube.com/boloniumband If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.  Orca (1977) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:09:00

No, not Oedipis Orca from the same year that repeatedly came up in my research but I was too afraid to click on, but instead Orca (1977). The film is also known as Orca: The Killer Whale.  The film is basically a spaghetti western starring a giant dolphin? Didn't you know that killer whales are dolphins? Yeah, I thought Raffi had fucked up majorly in his book for Baby Beluga, but a quick Google searched revealed that I am in fact the idiot.  Written by the team of Luciano Vincenzoni and Sergio Donati. VIcenzoni famously wrote For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and Death Rides a Horse. Donati co-authored For a Few Dollars More and went on to write Once Upon a Time in the West.  Produced by Dino De Laurentiis, who is responsible for nearly every irrefutable classic in seven decades. His works include the Silence of the Lambs franchise, numerous Stephen King adaptations (Silver Bullet, Cat's Eyes, Firestarter, Dead Zone), Amityville Horror, Halloween 2 and 3, and Jake's personal favorite: CONAN THE GODDAM BARBARIAN!!! The film was directed by Michael Anderson. Aside from having the most generic name ever, ANderson was famous for directing Logan's Run, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and ALMOST directing the ill-fated Nessie, which would have united Hammer Films and kaiju megaforce studio, TOHO. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the Directors Guild of Canada. Pretty neat, eh? The music is by Ennio Morricone, who did The Man Without a Name Trilogy, and virtually every other western you've ever heard of. At age 87, Morricone was briefly the oldest winner of a competitive Academy Award in 2016, for The Hateful Eight. The Cinematography was by J. Barry Herron and Ted Moore. Herron's contribution to the film was so significant that the  closing credits especially declare: "The producer wishes to acknowledge the very special photographic contribution made by J. BARRY HERRON." The film stars a pre-Dumbledore Richard Harris. You might also recall that he was King Arthur in Camelot and Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator. He would be in another famous western years later: Unforgiven.  Charlotte Rampling is Rachel Bedford. Her acting career was quite provocative. Go ahead, look up Max Mon Amour, I dare you.  Will Sampson played Umilak. You may recall he was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, after working as a bronco buster his entire life.  The bull whale was played by Yaka and Nepo. Nepo would pass shortly after the film in 1980, but Yaka lived an incredible 20 years thereafter. No, neither of them were Free Willy.  Instead of a "Hidden Track" this week, we are featuring a good friend's short story. Mike Martin of the Fort Arawak Podcast wrote and performed this awesome short-story: The Move. Metadata does not work. Whether I type like a bajillion words that are highly searched, or I write two half-assed sentences, our downloads remain the same. Still, I have some sick compulsion to dump time into these descriptions. Do you read them? Can you please validate me? Anyways, we are doing an episode on the 8-Bit horror titles from Nintendo. Hell, we even throw in.a couple of Super Nintendo titles, because it's our show and we do what we want. What of it, chump? Would you like us to do a retrospective on any other systems?  Resident Evil (2002) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:03:29

This week we have a special guest host, Adam, of the soon to be released, Deep Cuts Matinee podcast. Be sure to follow Slashers for more updates as we will be happily sharing our friends' work.  Based on the game of the same name... well not exactly, because the game is also called Biohazard... oh and virtually nothing from the game makes it into the movie... Well, based on one of the titles for the game, we are reviewing Resident Evil (2002). As we have through the entire "Button Smashers" month of June, we talk not only about the film, but the underlying game franchise as well. For instance, did you know that George A. Romero directed a Japanese commercial for Biohazard 2? Of all the films we have done this month, Resident Evil's film and game franchises are the most expansive. Hell, we even talk the novelization of this film, which is completely unnecessary.  The film was written and directed by, Paul W.S. Anderson, who penned all of the films in the franchise, including: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). You may recall his name as the director of the film we reviewed in our pilot episode, Event Horizon, and last week's episode, Mortal Kombat.  The soundtrack features an interesting collaboration with Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson. Beltrami did tons of movies in this era like Scream, The Faculty, Underworld Evolution, and Mimic, but went on to work on films like Logan and A Quiet Place.  Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Hellboy, and the upcoming Monster Hunter) plays Alice. Fun fact: she later went on to become Mrs. Paul W.S. Anderson.  Michelle Rodriguez of Fast and the Furious fame, is in this film. She later went on to appear in the tragically terrible Bloodrayne. Did you know she was arrested for assault the year Resident Evil came out? I did. I just forgot to mention it on the show.  Eric Mabius found his way into the film after skulking through The Crow: Salvation. Years before appearing in Alien vs. Predator, Colin Salmon, appeared in this film. You may remember him as the guy from the hallway who would fit into an ice cube tray.  This week's "Hidden Track" is by Project 19. It is called Torn by the Thread.  Mortal Kombat (1995) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:05:57

Think back, many eons ago, to our pilot episode: Event Horizon. It is absolutely shocking to think that Paul W.S. Anderson directed that film and also Mortal Kombat. While he went on to do other video game adaptations like Resident Evil and Alien vs Predator, those films overlap just a little more than ninjas and possessed spaceships.  The film is obviously based on the game of the same name. Did you know the game was developed by a team of four guys in just eight months? Did you know that the game was almost called Kumate? Death Blow? Dragon Attack? Fatality? While we focus mainly on the 1995 film, we talk about Annihilation and the recently released Scorpion's Revenge, as well as the comics, cartoons, TV shows, and even the live action stunt show.  Produced by Lawrence Kasanoff, the same dude who did Blood Diner, Class of 1999, A Gnome Named Gnorm, and the most expensive movie ever (at the time) True Lies. The film had three albums accompany it: Mortal Kombat: Original Motion Picture Score, Mortal Kombat: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and Mortal Kombat: More Kombat. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack went platinum in just 10 days.  You all know that Jake goes crazy researching these movies, and this episode was no exception. Not only do we discuss the actors in the film but also the original actors for the game and some of their other acting works (some of which may surprise you).  Christopher Lambert, author and star of Highlander, plays Raiden/ Rayden. Robin Sou is Liu Kang and we are seriously perplexed by the fact this guy was not the ultra famous action star we hoped he would be in our pre-teen years. Linden Ashby is Johnny Cage, who does a fair job of distinguishing the character from his source material: Jean-Claude Van Damme. Bridgette Wilson played Sonya Blade, but did you know who almost played her before she broke her wrist? Well... you should prolly listen to the episode then, huh?  Silent Hill (2006) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:08:24

Get in the car, loser. We're going to Silent Hill. That's right, the town littered with horrific nurse monsters and murderous enthusiasts of Egyptian architecture inspired headwear.  I think we do a fair job of detailing the video game origins, to the Playstation game and its many easter eggs. Did you ever notice the street names referred to virtually every major horror and sci-fi author for a bajillion years from Stephen King to Ray Bradburry? We even get into unused material on the game disc that was planned, but never used.   Shot under the name "Centralia," this film was directed by Christophe Gans. You may recall that Gans  also wrote and directed HP Lovecraft's Necronomicon and Brotherhood of the Wolf. I was surprised to learn that the co-writer of Pulp Fiction, Roger Avery, wrote this film. Don't worry, this was before his prison sentence, which we get into! All of the music in the film, aside from one song, is derived from Akira Yamaoka's original soundtrack for the game. He also did the music for the incredibly fun possum video game, Rocket Knight Adventures. Because of this, I like to pretend these games are in the same universe.  Our protagonist is Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black, Man on Fire, The Crazies) as Rose Da Silva. She is on a quest to figure out the reason for her adopted daughter's sleepwalkings and ramblings about Silent Hill.  Sean Bean (007 Golden Eye, Lord of the Rings, Equilibrium) plays Christopher Da Silva. He was so good in the role, they actually added several scenes with him in it, so he could get more screen time. And before you ask, no- he does not die in this film, unlike Game of Thrones and nearly everything else.  Laurie Holden plays Cybil Bennett, and damn she is boring. The character Cybil is a playable character in the Japan-exclusive GameBoy Advance text-adventure remake of the game, Silent Hill Play Novel. Jodelle Ferland is Alessa Gillespie, the sleepwalker who is kinda like a reincarnation of a ghost from a girl killed by religious zealots. She went on to voice the Little Sisters in the BioShock video game series. This week's "Hidden Track" is Doomstress with their song, Sleep Among the Dead. If you like the tune, you can find their music and merch at: www.doomstress.bandcamp.com. They were also on the new Women of Doom compilation vinyl from Desert Records.  DOOM (2006) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:15

So when we had the idea to do this movie, it was because we joked about June Doom instead of the usual June Gloom. Since recording, the world is now on fire, aside from being infected with a plague. First and foremost, all silliness and antics aside, we hope you are safe. In our own way, we love each of you and truly wish the best for you and your loved ones.  Now... onto this terrible movie! Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave). David Callaham wrote the script, and also penned Zombieland Double Tap, the now delayed Wonder Woman 1984, and both Shang Chi and the revamped Mortal Kombat still in development. The film is very loosely based on the DOOM franchise, starring the stoic, brave, and beautiful DOOMGUY. Fun fact, did you know Doomguy was a playable character in Tony Hawk?  Also, we discuss the similarities in this movie, Overlord, and Wolfenstein. Another fun fact, they refer to William BJ Blazkowicz from the Wolfenstein games in DOOM: Annihilation. We briefly talk about Annihilation and the writer/ director, Tony Giglio, who also penned Soccer Dog: The Movie.  The music was by Clint Mansell and if you haven't heard his score for MOON, dude... reassess your goals.  Karl Urban, who played DND on the set of Chronicles of Riddick with Vin Diesel, plays John "Reaper" Grimm. He was also in Lord of the Rings, Dredd, and this lil' franchise called Star Trek you may have heard of. Frustratingly, his costume looks nothing like John Carmack's designs in the 1993 game.  Dwayne Johnson (credited as The Rock) plays Asher "Sarge" Mahonin. While he was offered the lead role, he chose this supporting part instead. He, like nearly everyone who's seen it, was not a tremendous fan of the film even taking a jab at it in his 2008 WWE Hall of Fame inductance speech.  This week's "Hidden Track" is by a band I have loved since high school (way too long ago); they are DOOM and they are rad. https://ukdoom.bandcamp.com/ If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.
