Giants trade for Mike Tauchman, lose late vs. Rockies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1690

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' trade for Mike Tauchman, and their disappointing loss to the Rockies on Tuesday night. Tauchman was acquired for left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta and a player to be named later. He figures to play every day against right-handed pitching, and his presence should be a boost to the Giants' lineup and bench. Austin Slater has been starting in center against righties, and he has not done well in that role. Now that Tauchman is in the fold, the Giants can start Alex Dickerson, Tauchman, and Mike Yastrzemski in the outfield against right-handed starters. This also makes their bench deeper because Slater gets added to it, and he can be utilized as a pinch hitter against lefties. The Giants will miss Peralta, but he is replaceable on the roster considering the Giants have three other lefty relievers (Jake McGee, Caleb Baragar, and José Álvarez) on the active roster, one more (Jarlin García) on the 10-day IL, and two others (Sam Selman, Conner Menez) on the 40-man roster. Ben also discusses the Giants' tough loss last night, in which Gregory Santos was a questionable reliever that Gabe Kapler went to in a tie game in the 10th, and he surrendered two home runs that sunk the Giants' chances of winning. Brandon Crawford homered in the 9th to tie the game, but the Giants could not overcome several mistakes and general poor performance by the bullpen.  DeSclafani shutout, offensive eruption vaults Giants into first place | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1674

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the San Francisco Giants' 12-0 drubbing of the Colorado Rockies, a win that vaulted them into a first-place tie with the Dodgers in the NL West. Anthony DeSclafani pitched a complete game shutout, lowering his ERA on the season to 1.50. The Giants' starting staff as a whole now has an MLB-best 2.11 ERA. DeSclafani seems to be the latest among a growing list of pitchers who have revitalized their careers since coming to the Giants. A ton of credit needs to go to the Giants' coaching staff, and Gabe Kapler for hiring them, and Farhan Zaidi for targeting the right players and hiring Kapler. On the offensive side, the Giants improved their non-pitcher wRC+ to 101, meaning they've actually been above average on the season. Buster Posey busted out with four hits last night, including a double and a towering home run to dead center field. Evan Longoria was able to play, as was Brandon Belt. Both have minor leg injuries. Mike Yastrzemski was out of the lineup with oblique tightness, but Kapler said he was hopeful Yaz would be able to avoid a trip to the injured list.  Giants roll, but injuries could take toll | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1589

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants are playing like one of the premier teams in the National League. They got three more excellent starts over the weekend, from Alex Wood, Kevin Gausman, and Logan Webb. Their starters now have the second-lowest ERA in the NL. The second thing we learned is that Mike Yastrzemski is hurt, and that's a big blow. He has left oblique tightness, which is a pretty serious baseball injury. The third thing we learned is that there are four banged up infielders, and that the Giants may need to make some roster moves. Brandon Belt (quad), Brandon Crawford (side/ribs), Evan Longoria (hamstring), and Donovan Solano (calf) are dealing with injuries. Does anyone need to go on the IL? If it's Yaz, will Steven Duggar, LaMonte Wade Jr., or even Heliot Ramos get called up? Is there a scenario where it's Thairo Estrada who gets the call?  Casali catches fifth straight shutout as Giants blank Fish | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1595

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' 3-0 win against the Marlins, in which Curt Casali collected his fifth straight shutout when he was the starting catcher. Casali also had a big two-run single in the first inning. The Giants improved to 12-7 with the win, and Casali became just the fifth catcher in MLB history to accomplish the feat. Aaron Sanchez pitched beautifully despite diminished velocity, and Gregory Santos made his major league debut out of the bullpen and was electric. He was added to the roster after Donovan Solano was placed on the IL. Matt Wisler, Tyler Rogers, and Jake McGee pitched scoreless frames as the Giants completed the shutout. Evan Longoria exited this game with left hamstring tightness. Listen to The Ultimate Mock Draft 2021 presented by Audacy and the Locked On Podcast Network.  Giants mailbag: Does Yastrzemski need a mental reset? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1666

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers listeners' questions about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Should Mike Yastrzemski be dropped in the order or given some days off? I see a lot of fans suggesting Gabe Kapler should give some of the struggling hitters like Yastrzemski or Mauricio Dubón a couple days rest as sort of a mental reset. What do you think of this strategy with hitters, or is it better to stay in nearly every day like those two players are now? Is there anything specific you see with Yastrzemski’s swing or approach at the plate that’s different from last year that might be leading to his continued struggles? Any bullpen guys that you think are on a short leash as in getting sent down? Do they have the bullpen depth they thought they did to start the season? I'm excited about Camilo Doval just based on his results and personality — but are there also specific quantitative reasons to be excited about him, like velocity, spin rate, etc.? What did the front office see in him that caused him to get promoted so aggressively? What is Tyler Beede's impact this year? Who would be your choice to replace Donovan Solano on the active roster if he is put on the IL? Jason Vosler, Thairo Estrada, another outfielder?  Giants show resilience in 3-3 road trip | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1502

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the last two games of the San Francisco Giants' 3-3 road trip through Miami and Philadelphia. The Giants got shaky starts by Logan Webb and Anthony DeSclafani in their latest two games, but the offense showed resilience and stormed back both times. In the first game, a six-run eighth inning propelled the Giants to victory. Buster Posey homered twice in the game, Alex Dickerson and Wilmer Flores each hit three-run homers in the inning, and Tommy La Stella hit a home run of his own. In the series finale, with the Giants going for a sweep, they fell behind early but then stormed back on a three-run home by Darin Ruf against his former team, and an Alex Dickerson single against a lefty. The Giants bullpen couldn't hold the lead, however, as Camilo Doval gave up a solo home run to Bryce Harper and Wandy Peralta allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth as the Phillies walked off the Giants. Donovan Solano injured his calf in the game and will likely head to the injured list, and Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford both had minor injuries and had to come out of the game on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.  Kapler wins 200th game as Giants shut out Phils | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1600

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' 2-0 win over the Phillies in Philadelphia. It was the 200th win in Gabe Kapler's managerial career, which had to feel extra sweet coming against the Phillies. The Giants' manager was fired by the Phillies and treated poorly by Phillies fans and media. He's now 200-200 as a manager, and the man the Phillies hired to replace him is just 36-40. Kapler was 161-163 as Phillies manager—a superior winning percentage. Kevin Gausman started for the Giants, and he delivered another six shutout innings. The Giants' starting staff continues to carry the team, and they're now second in all of baseball in earned run average. Brandon Belt delivered a key two-run home run that was the extent of the offense for the night. The bats still need to wake up, but the Giants' pitching has helped the team get off to a nice 10-6 start. Matt Wisler, Camilo Doval, and Wandy Peralta each notched a scoreless inning to complete the shutout and Kap's 200th career win.  Giants starting pitchers carry team to 9-6 start | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1591

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants' starting pitchers have carried the team to its 9-6 start. Alex Wood made his Giants debut on Sunday, and he kept the line moving with five shutout innings. Kevin Gausman, Johnny Cueto, Anthony DeSclafani, and Aaron Sanchez have also pitched well in all of their starts. The second thing we learned is that the Giants made several roster moves over the weekend. Jake McGee, who blew his first save of the year on Saturday, was placed on the Covid-IL, along with Logan Webb, due to side effects from the vaccine. Chadwick Tromp was also called up because Posey is dealing with elbow discomfort after a HBP. Camilo Doval was also added to the roster, and he had a dominant first appearance on Sunday. Finally, we learned that the Giants offense is officially off to a slow start. Mike Yastrzemski continues to scuffle, and the Giants were fortunate to escape with a win on Sunday despite scoring only one run. Several key underlying metrics suggest that the Giants should be on the verge of breaking out at the plate, but that just hasn't yet materialized. Circling back to the first thing we learned, the starting pitchers have carried the load for a struggling offense and sometimes shaky bullpen.  Inbox: Are the Giants actually . . . good? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1639

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Are the Giants actually . . . good? Where do you think the Giants will end their playoff run? Even if they make it, since the NL west is so stacked. If Johnny Cueto ends up missing time with an injury, who do you think should be called into the rotation? Also, do you think a lengthy injury to a starter so soon in the season could derail the momentum that the team seems to be building? Is Evan Longoria due for a bounce back year? His batted ball data from 2020 was really promising (reminded me of pre-2020 Marcell Ozuna) and so far he’s looked really good, which we love to see. Who’s due for a hot streak? Do the Giants see Heliot Ramos as a CF option, or strictly as a corner OF? Are the Giants considering sending Mauricio Dubón down and bringing Ramos up? Should we be worried about how much Gabe Kapler and the Giants are relying on Tyler Rogers and Jake McGee early on? They clearly don’t trust other relievers in high leverage situations, but how big of a concern is workload management this early in the season? Nitpicking, but why not bat Brandon Belt low in the order until he catches up from his missed spring training at bats? He’s lost at the plate for obvious reasons. Perfect player to take a walk in front of the nine hole. When he gets hot, you move him back to the three hole. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Giants cruise to 5-1 homestand, lose Cueto to lat injury | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1592

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the San Francisco Giants' 3-0 win against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday afternoon, and recaps their 5-1 homestand and 8-4 overall start to the season. Johnny Cueto provided the Giants with yet another strong start, but he had to leave the game in the sixth inning with a lat injury. Austin Slater collected another big hit, and the bullpen, headlined by Jake McGee in the ninth, shut down the Reds offense. McGee now has an MLB-leading six saves in six chances. He has yet to allow a run. Ben also discusses some roster moves the Giants have made in recent days and will make in the coming days. Logan Webb was moved to the bullpen as Alex Wood gets ready to join the Giants' rotation on Sunday in Miami. LaMonte Wade Jr. was placed on the IL with an oblique injury, and Steven Duggar was recalled in his place. Lastly, the Giants made a minor trade earlier this week, acquiring shortstop Thairo Estrada from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  Giants power past Reds in comeback win | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1687

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' dramatic comeback win against the Cincinnati Reds. Kevin Gausman surrendered a pair of two-run home runs in the first inning, but the Giants offense responded with a pair of two-run bombs in the bottom half of the inning. Tommy La Stella led off with his first of three hits, and Mike Yastrzemski hit one over the wall at 109 mph, the hardest hit ball of his major league career. Brandon Crawford later homered in the inning with Evan Longoria on base. Overall, the Giants are looking as advertised. They have quality players up and down the 26-man roster, and their platooning and pinch hitting is starting to pay dividends again, as it did last year. The starting pitching has exceeded expectations thus far, and the bullpen has been pretty good after their Opening Day meltdown. Jake McGee collected his fifth save in Tuesday's win, and he has still yet to allow a hit or a run. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!  SWEEEEP | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1598

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. We learned that they're off to their best start since 2016, at 6-3. The Giants swept the Rockies over the weekend, with Johnny Cueto and Anthony DeSclafani pitching gems, and Brandon Crawford fueling an emerging offense. We learned that the starting pitching has been among the very best in baseball through nine games, and they've given the Giants a chance to win each and every game thus far. Finally, the third thing we learned this weekend is that the offense is ready to break out. There are encouraging signs all over the place, none more so than Statcast suggesting that their wOBA should be .348, when their actual wOBA is just .340. A breakout is likely coming on offense.  Inbox: Should we be concerned about some of the Giants' struggling hitters? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1715

Today on the Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants as the 2021 season gets underway. Among the questions asked and answered are: If the offense keeps struggling, when do you think is a good time to start worrying about it? Should we be concerned about some of the struggling hitters (Brandon Belt, Mike Yastrzemski, etc.)? Small sample size but they’ve struck out a lot and haven’t hit it hard. Are we going to start to see an outfield shuffle if things don’t start going as planned? Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, and Mauricio Dubón’s bats haven’t woken up). Do you think part of the problem with Dickerson’s poor numbers has to do with his sporadic playing time so far? How long can the Giants survive with three current righties (Matt Wisler, Tyler Rogers, and Reyes Moronta) they have in the bullpen? It's a bit too early to tell I guess, but I wonder what the timeline is to get Moronta back into higher leveraged opportunities. Right-handed pitchers out the 'pen have come out the gates struggling. How long of a leash will Farhan Zaidi/Gabe Kapler have with them before Camilo Doval and others get a shot? How concerning is it that Moronta doesn't have a strikeout to start the season? He's inducing a lot of weak contact at the moment, but I'm not sure how sustainable that is when hitters start to figure out he doesn't have the same fastball he used to have. How aggressive do you think the Giants will be about extending players during the season, given how many roster spots will be open at the end of the season? And who is most likely to get an extension? I’d like to see the Giants extend Kevin Gausman during the season considering they have a lot of money coming off the payroll. Do you think they can, and how much do you think it would be? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
