On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' trade for Mike Tauchman, and their disappointing loss to the Rockies on Tuesday night. Tauchman was acquired for left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta and a player to be named later. He figures to play every day against right-handed pitching, and his presence should be a boost to the Giants' lineup and bench. Austin Slater has been starting in center against righties, and he has not done well in that role. Now that Tauchman is in the fold, the Giants can start Alex Dickerson, Tauchman, and Mike Yastrzemski in the outfield against right-handed starters. This also makes their bench deeper because Slater gets added to it, and he can be utilized as a pinch hitter against lefties. The Giants will miss Peralta, but he is replaceable on the roster considering the Giants have three other lefty relievers (Jake McGee, Caleb Baragar, and José Álvarez) on the active roster, one more (Jarlin García) on the 10-day IL, and two others (Sam Selman, Conner Menez) on the 40-man roster. Ben also discusses the Giants' tough loss last night, in which Gregory Santos was a questionable reliever that Gabe Kapler went to in a tie game in the 10th, and he surrendered two home runs that sunk the Giants' chances of winning. Brandon Crawford homered in the 9th to tie the game, but the Giants could not overcome several mistakes and general poor performance by the bullpen. Anthony DeSclafani pitched a complete game shutout, lowering his ERA on the season to 1.50. The Giants' starting staff as a whole now has an MLB-best 2.11 ERA. DeSclafani seems to be the latest among a growing list of pitchers who have revitalized their careers since coming to the Giants. A ton of credit needs to go to the Giants' coaching staff, and Gabe Kapler for hiring them, and Farhan Zaidi for targeting the right players and hiring Kapler. On the offensive side, the Giants improved their non-pitcher wRC+ to 101, meaning they've actually been above average on the season. Buster Posey busted out with four hits last night, including a double and a towering home run to dead center field. Evan Longoria was able to play, as was Brandon Belt. Both have minor leg injuries. Mike Yastrzemski was out of the lineup with oblique tightness, but Kapler said he was hopeful Yaz would be able to avoid a trip to the injured list. The first thing we learned is that the Giants are playing like one of the premier teams in the National League. They got three more excellent starts over the weekend, from Alex Wood, Kevin Gausman, and Logan Webb. Their starters now have the second-lowest ERA in the NL. The second thing we learned is that Mike Yastrzemski is hurt, and that's a big blow. He has left oblique tightness, which is a pretty serious baseball injury. The third thing we learned is that there are four banged up infielders, and that the Giants may need to make some roster moves. Brandon Belt (quad), Brandon Crawford (side/ribs), Evan Longoria (hamstring), and Donovan Solano (calf) are dealing with injuries. Does anyone need to go on the IL? The Giants got shaky starts by Logan Webb and Anthony DeSclafani in their latest two games, but the offense showed resilience and stormed back both times. In the first game, a six-run eighth inning propelled the Giants to victory. Buster Posey homered twice in the game, Alex Dickerson and Wilmer Flores each hit three-run homers in the inning, and Tommy La Stella hit a home run of his own. In the series finale, with the Giants going for a sweep, they fell behind early but then stormed back on a three-run home by Darin Ruf against his former team, and an Alex Dickerson single against a lefty. The Giants bullpen couldn't hold the lead, however, as Camilo Doval gave up a solo home run to Bryce Harper and Wandy Peralta allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth as the Phillies walked off the Giants. Donovan Solano injured his calf in the game and will likely head to the injured list, and Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford both had minor injuries and had to come out of the game on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. It was the 200th win in Gabe Kapler's managerial career, which had to feel extra sweet coming against the Phillies. The Giants' manager was fired by the Phillies and treated poorly by Phillies fans and media. He's now 200-200 as a manager, and the man the Phillies hired to replace him is just 36-40. Kapler was 161-163 as Phillies manager—a superior winning percentage. Kevin Gausman started for the Giants, and he delivered another six shutout innings. The Giants' starting staff continues to carry the team, and they're now second in all of baseball in earned run average. Brandon Belt delivered a key two-run home run that was the extent of the offense for the night. The bats still need to wake up, but the Giants' pitching has helped the team get off to a nice 10-6 start. The second thing we learned is that the Giants made several roster moves over the weekend. Jake McGee, who blew his first save of the year on Saturday, was placed on the Covid-IL, along with Logan Webb, due to side effects from the vaccine. Chadwick Tromp was also called up because Posey is dealing with elbow discomfort after a HBP. Camilo Doval was also added to the roster, and he had a dominant first appearance on Sunday. Finally, we learned that the Giants offense is officially off to a slow start. Mike Yastrzemski continues to scuffle, and the Giants were fortunate to escape with a win on Sunday despite scoring only one run. Several key underlying metrics suggest that the Giants should be on the verge of breaking out at the plate, but that just hasn't yet materialized. Circling back to the first thing we learned, the starting pitchers have carried the load for a struggling offense and sometimes shaky bullpen. Should we be worried about how much Gabe Kapler and the Giants are relying on Tyler Rogers and Jake McGee early on? They clearly don’t trust other relievers in high leverage situations, but how big of a concern is workload management this early in the season? Nitpicking, but why not bat Brandon Belt low in the order until he catches up from his missed spring training at bats? He’s lost at the plate for obvious reasons. They have quality players up and down the 26-man roster, and their platooning and pinch hitting is starting to pay dividends again, as it did last year. The starting pitching has exceeded expectations thus far, and the bullpen has been pretty good after their Opening Day meltdown. Among the questions asked and answered are: If the offense keeps struggling, when do you think is a good time to start worrying about it? Should we be concerned about some of the struggling hitters (Brandon Belt, Mike Yastrzemski, etc.)? Small sample size but they’ve struck out a lot and haven’t hit it hard. Are we going to start to see an outfield shuffle if things don’t start going as planned? Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, and Mauricio Dubón’s bats haven’t woken up). Do you think part of the problem with Dickerson’s poor numbers has to do with his sporadic playing time so far? How long can the Giants survive with three current righties (Matt Wisler, Tyler Rogers, and Reyes Moronta) they have in the bullpen? It's a bit too early to tell I guess, but I wonder what the timeline is to get Moronta back into higher leveraged opportunities. Right-handed pitchers out the 'pen have come out the gates struggling. How long of a leash will Farhan Zaidi/Gabe Kapler have with them before Camilo Doval and others get a shot? How concerning is it that Moronta doesn't have a strikeout to start the season? He's inducing a lot of weak contact at the moment, but I'm not sure how sustainable that is when hitters start to figure out he doesn't have the same fastball he used to have. How aggressive do you think the Giants will be about extending players during the season, given how many roster spots will be open at the end of the season? And who is most likely to get an extension? I’d like to see the Giants extend Kevin Gausman during the season considering they have a lot of money coming off the payroll.
